And as a Greek i love how it was the obvious inspiration about that dialog between Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister early in GOT series. Where Jon asks Tyrion why so many books and he allways reading and he answers by asking "tell me what you see when you look at me?" Then as he does not answer he answers himself "you see a dwarf, meaning i am not suited for a sword having short limbs being a disadvantage. You have your swords and i have my mind and a mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone."
The thing is Polyphemus is a young cyclops which he was bullied for so his father gave him the sheep and the sheep became his only friends and which Odysseus killed then compared the worth of his friend to the worth of wine so yeah Polyphemus was offended So Odysseus broke into the home of a young male, killed his best friend, drugged him, disabled him, and then taunted him to do something about it
If i remember correctly then the reason for the design of Polyphemus is because that Cyclops are descendants of posidon. And posidon being the god of sea, storm and horse, is the reason why Polyphemus has a crap shape head and horse feets. A genius and terrifying design choice in my opinion 😊
The great thing about this cyclops design is that the original cyclops is not terrifying to our modern sensibilities, while to the ancient Greeks it was grotesque and bizarre. I love Mircy’s design since it makes use of things to bring that terror to the modern eye.
If I remember right, Jorge has a short on his channel (you can probably find it by searching "how the voice of Polyphemus was made") where he shows what he used to make the vocal effect. I think it was a harmonizer with an active setting, and then pitched way down to make it sound monsterous
Just watched it a few minutes ago! It was a much simpler process than I expected - just one device that essentially modulated two main parameters instead of a bunch of plug-ins for a software program. Very cool
So the art design for the cyclops is really interesting. I personally love the take of it because if you notice it is foreshadowing the relationship between the cyclops and Poseidon. Horse legs, the gangly body and crab like head.

While I would love for them to have been lovers, and hate subscribing to even a bit of the "oh they were just besties" narrative of mainstream historiography, in this case of Achilles and Patroclus, all the evidence suggests that they shared more of a brotherly love, not a typical romantic one we associate with partners nowadays. The book Achilles in Vietnam by Jonathan Shay explores that well, and finds a hell of a lot of similarities between their love, and one shared by combat veterans and their closest mates while in the war. Even ancient evidence from Xenophon and Socrates suggests so. I learned by watching David Larson's videos on subharmonics, and Thou Yang (Bass2yang on UA-cam) also has great tutorials. From there it's really just practicing and noodling around with them (and being forced by The Bass Gang to record insane bass lines lol)
I learned by trying to vibrate my chest. I had a cold at work, so I was humming / singing on [a] as low as I could to try and shake mucus free without coughing everywhere, and accidentally started subharmonics.

Here's the video you were interested in where Jay explains how he did the voice of Polyphemus ua-cam.com/video/2VBsQgfL1uU/v-deo.htmlsi=Jmi_yWeebRRMjNRg
Ophy: "Yea, we came and killed your pet/friend, but here have a mike's lemonade. we cool, right?" Also starting to think all the musicians use a guild of editors all named 'mason' :P Love seeing people analyse both the musicality and lyric/story of these.
So quick fun fact, polyphamus is actually trying to be very merciful here. In the tradition of Cyclops' if a group comes into your home and kills one of your livestock, you are able to retaliate by killing off the entire group. When polyphemous says that Odysseus will be the final man to die. He's saying that for all of mankind every man who will come to his home will be treated with kindness. He thinks that he is giving Odysseus one absolute hell of a deal. Offering to spare his entire crew, and an extension all of Man, in exchange for his own life.
I always interpreted that as him saying "I'll kill the crew first and you last" but your interpretation is really interesting! Is that how it is in the Odyssey, or is it your personal take on it?
*insert iasip meme here* that doesnt sound right, but I don't know enough about scholarly discussions about the Odyssey/ancient Greek culture to dispute it Pretty sure in Epic Polyphemus is saying he's going to kill Odysseus' whole crew, then Odysseus himself not anything about sparing future travelers (unless you've seen Jorge make a post specifying otherwise?) In the _Odyssey_ however, Ody & his crew 100% know the cyclops lives there, but they go in & steal from him anyways. The cyclops is a lot more sarcastic when he says he'll kill Nobody's companions then Nobody himself. More of a 'Suuuure, I'll give you a gift, _here's_ your ""gift"" ' Than a sincere (albeit lousy) trade like in the musical
Love the perspective and insight you bring to the musical side, but personally, I think the reaction is too much stop and start. I get needing to pause to react, but pausing every 10 seconds kinda ruins the flow. Especially when you rewind and pause again at the same place multiple times in a row. I wonder if doing one uninterrupted watch before going back to pause and analyze on a second watch would be better.
Once you finish with these videos you should go back through the new releases of the old songs. He improved and updated every song for the Thunder Saga's release, improving on the vocals and instrumental balance of every song. They are still very similar, but there is a noticeable change in every song. All of the Animatics are of the older song versions, but still slap cause, i mean, c'mon it's Epic haha

I enjoyed the reaction, and my goodness is your vocal range amazing.
9 DAYS?!?!?
Isn't that better than a last-minute premiere? Tryna give y'all time to prepare 😆
Here's the video you were interested in where Jay explains how he did the voice of Polyphemus

Was looking for this comment before I said something, thanks!
Ophy: "Yea, we came and killed your pet/friend, but here have a mike's lemonade. we cool, right?"
Also starting to think all the musicians use a guild of editors all named 'mason' :P Love seeing people analyse both the musicality and lyric/story of these.
This and thunder saga are my two faves
When this gets to broadway they could also use a voice distorter on stage
Jay used some sort of voice modulator device (Idk what it's called) for the voice of Polyphemus.
epic is back
As awesome as the Troy Saga is, this Saga turns up the dial by several notches.
Showing off with that beautiful bassy opt down. LOL.
omg mason is everywhere
Does everyone have a mason? Theres like three at this point
Right? Mason is becoming the new Jake from state farm
@@Melbern11 lmao
Just a suggestion: play the whole song through once in the beginning of the video and then go back and dissect. Love your videos though!
*insert iasip meme here* that doesnt sound right, but I don't know enough about scholarly discussions about the Odyssey/ancient Greek culture to dispute it
Pretty sure in Epic Polyphemus is saying he's going to kill Odysseus' whole crew, then Odysseus himself not anything about sparing future travelers (unless you've seen Jorge make a post specifying otherwise?)
In the _Odyssey_ however, Ody & his crew 100% know the cyclops lives there, but they go in & steal from him anyways. The cyclops is a lot more sarcastic when he says he'll kill Nobody's companions then Nobody himself.
More of a 'Suuuure, I'll give you a gift, _here's_ your ""gift"" '
Than a sincere (albeit lousy) trade like in the musical
Dimash Kudaibergen- Daididau ; please
I think it's easier to follow because Jay had no prior experience with music theory.
❤
Actually, I don't think that's a choir you're hearing. I think that's just how his voice sounds.
I got smacked in the face with 'Patroclus, Achilles' cousin'
NO- Like okay the gay lovers thing is debateable but _no_ why Hollywood-
My ‘like’ was number 666.
Nice.
Does he also react to the newer versions of the first 2 sagas?
Once you finish with these videos you should go back through the new releases of the old songs. He improved and updated every song for the Thunder Saga's release, improving on the vocals and instrumental balance of every song. They are still very similar, but there is a noticeable change in every song. All of the Animatics are of the older song versions, but still slap cause, i mean, c'mon it's Epic haha
sounds like autotune for me
I'm just waiting until he goes to another artist... This one is awesome, but is too focused on the original odissey and not in the story that Jorge wants to tell everybody with his show and effort... Sometimes this gets in the way
This guy, @PeterBarber, said that Diana Аnkudinowa's voice was a result of digital modulation and I've hated him ever since!!!!!!!!!
I expect him to say that Dimash's voice is also the result of digital modulation and this will kill me for good!
...I never once said that. You are a clown.
@@PeterBarber , As a child I wanted to be a clown. My father was in the military and he didn't like that. It made me want to become a civil aircraft pilot and I don't regret it. I am now retired and now I mow my meadow. Thank you for your attention!
@@PeterBarber Wow, Peter, you have a stalker!
