Thanks for enlightening us on this forgotten cartridge. This is the first I have heard of this and I have shot black powder for 50 years and have friends and relatives in civil war reenactment. (I still don't understand why they keep thinking the south will eventually win LOL).

Good point. I stopped shooting my 58 cal Zouave because musket caps are hard to find today.

I've always used loose powder and a round ball, sometimes with a Wonder Wad; but the idea of cartridges, either paper or skin, intrigues me. I may have to get the book and try some. I need a good excuse to shoot the cap and ball revolvers again anyway.

This seems easier than paper cartridges honestly, I guess just keep them away from the dog

That's an interesting idea.. I've never heard of skin cartridges before now. I can see how they would be excellent protection against moisture. The only drawback I can see is commercially available natural casings are packed in salt. You'd have to make sure they were rinsed exceptionally well. Thanks for the share brother 🤠..! Happy New Year..!

I thank you profusely Mr Thomas for this video, it was unexpected and much appreciated. I hope all my readers look closely at the thousand word section for Ideas in in mandrel making as it's not set in stone, even tape can be used for the proper length. And like has been brought to my attention, I should mention that if you wish to do 6 cases, you need 6 formers, they need to dry on the former.

I have made truly combusitble flash paper cartridges sealed with flash glue that leave the chambers spotless after ignition. I also eperimented using cigarette papers which do work, but leave charred paper in the chambers which must be cleaned out before reloading. Cigarette papers are good to use for practicing with the mandrel until you feel confident using it. They are nitrated, but only to make the paper burn at the same slow rate as the tobacco. Were the original skin cartridges made from lamb appendix and were they treated to be combustible like flash paper?

@@robertrobert7924 hi there,, I've done everything you mention and more with cartridges over the years, the skin cartridges are just something I like to do so I'm a little biased toward them.. the skin is nothing more than sausage casing, you can make your own if you can get some animal guts ..

@@theskincartridge1234 I just ordered the book from Amazon. I miss the days when
shipping costs were reasonable and oniline companies did not have to add State sales tax to the bill.

@@robertrobert7924 I thank you for your patronage, I hope it serves you well and that you get the hang of making them. They are easier than it first seems. The thousand word section and all the pictures should enhance your imagination on different equipment.

While using gut as a medium makes sense, I had no idea this was ever done. Of course there are a great many things I am sure I don't know. LOL!

Ultimately flashpaper was the best can you wax the ends after firing there's no more paper no more cartridge Nothing Left Behind the reloading was fairly fast and easy

I wonder why these would be made instead of paper ones? cuz would the length of time they take to make be worth it? Now I am curious

AT THE TIME OF THE CIVIL WAR paper was expensive and gut was cheap plus once made the skin ones were often coated in a varnish that helped waterproof the cartridge better than paper ones
