Its nice to see our people uploading there videos to youtube. Bead work is so beautiful. Im watching videos right now so i can teach my kids how to keep our tradition alive and to start making my wedding dress. So proud and so honoured. A thousand thumbs up 👍
wow! I just have the utmost respect for people who do crafts that take so much detail. It is mindblowing how long this would take to make a large scale design. Thank you for letting us see this.
Your video is around the 20th (I've lost count) UA-cam video I've tried watching to learn how to stitch beads onto brain taned leather, and yours is the only one who actually got to the point and showed how to do it... THANK YOU!
this makes so much sense! i was trying to figure out how to get my extra-thin beading needles to go through the leather without bending or breaking - apparently you just have to skim it! thank you for explaining this so clearly!
I'm glad she said that because my dad told me you could tan a squirrel hide with its brains and make a sting from the hide, an old man had shown him when he was young.
At the beginning you say you draw lines, what do you mean by that, draw lines where and with what, you don't describe that or why you draw lines, also how do you start this project, this whole video seemed rushed and not like a lesson at all.
This is an excellent demo of doing the lazy stitch. I'm a beginner at lazy stitch and amazed at the leather, how smoothly the needle goes through it. Do you know where I could buy some? Thank you!
Lady, you are amazing!! Thank you so much for this. ♥️ Is there a difference between beading on leather vs a beaded piece? I'm worried that I'll make moccasins for my nephew and I will lose the design as he grows. Any advice? Thank you!!! Mandan Arikara here! 🪶
Adorei! ❤ from Rio-Brazil.
I went to Riverside Indian School back in 1983 and a dorm parent taught me how to build a loom and use it, I've been doing it ever since. I love the outcome of this stitch you're showing. I've tried it but it sure takes a lot of patience, maybe I'll give it another try. Thanks for your video, sharing to one of my beading Groups. Bent Needle Beading and I have another Group called Beadwork Only Sales & Custom Orders on Facebook.
wow, quyanaq! I am going to make song dance mittens with my hs students, all the way from alaska! was wondering what beading techniques to use to make beadtops for our dance mittens and this was very much helpful.
Patients like I cant imgine the focus required to hand stitch like that what beautiful work. Its all the materials that make up this type of utility items and the tradition with a real purpose the durability is probably just as amazing I bet. Thank You
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. Your work is beautiful and I have to say.... you are my kinda woman! Love your creative space ❤❤😎
I was interested in your comment about how the leather is tanned using the brain and liver of the animal. I remembered reading this in a survival book one time. I think it mentioned brain but not the liver. This may seem like a weird question, but is the brain and liver of one animal enough to tan the hide of that animal?
What I know from people who tan the leather is that, yes, the brain of one animal is enough to tan that one animal. I don't have personal experience, just what I've listened to others saying. If you're in the area of rendezvous re-enactments you might find people who do this. Good luck! It's an interesting pursuit!
I wish the people helping with filming would be more attentive to showing the close ups more instead pf showing her while she's talking, you don't need to show her talking we can hear her anyway dang.
HEY MISS TERRI GREEVES MA'AM I'M INTERESTED IN STUFF LIKE U'RE DOING I JUST NEED SOMEONE TO TEACH ME HOW TO BEAD LIKE INDIANS DID IN THE OLD DAYS, / OR DO TODAY; SO I CAN MAKE MY LITTLE 4 YEAR OLD NEPHEW JAXSON SOMETHING AND STUFF LIKE YOU MAKE MA'AM PLEASE? (("I LOVE INDIAN TRIBE BEADS AND STUFF THAT'S MADE BY REAL INDIANS MA'AM"))😃🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒
It always annoys me when some people say that a hide is “brain tanned.” Yes, the brains may be used in the process to make the hide, but ONLY to make the hide soft. Smoking the hide is what gives it the tanned color, NOT the brains.
Tanning is the process of processing a hide so it wont rot but is preserved. It doesn't have anything to do with what color the hide turns out to be. Yes, smoking a hide will help turn it brown, however, there are many methods for tanning hides. Brain tanning doesn't make the leather soft, what makes it soft is working the skin to stretch it out to break down the fibers so the leather remains pliable. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanning_(leather)
SpiritBear12 the link you attached describes how the Europeans tanned leather, but it fails to discuss the way indigenous peoples of North American tanned leather, to this day indigenous peoples don’t use chemicals to brain tan leather, we do it traditionally according to our teachings. Therefore while the other information you commented is accurate it’s not the historical way native peoples did it, and natives have been Brain tanning for 20 thousand plus years
Well actually it is brain tanned leather, when brain tanned leather is not smoked it’s a white colour, smoking the hide has nothing to do with the tanning process unless it’s the tanning technique you intend to use, in other words, you can be annoyed all you want, but brain tanning is the correct term for that technique

Hello,
Can you please share where you got your materials/ what type of thread, needle size you used?
wow! I just have the utmost respect for people who do crafts that take so much detail. It is mindblowing how long this would take to make a large scale design. Thank you for letting us see this.

THANK YOU!
Hi, which tribes practiced this stitching technique? I am mainly wondering if it was used by Great Basin tribes (Paiute, Goshute, Shoshone, Ute, etc.)
Your work is stunning, and you explain things so eloquently! Thank you for sharing.
I could just sit with you all day long and learn. You're so amazing!!!
Love the Boba Fet moccasins! I've been trying to find a good video explaining how to do the two needle method! Thank you!
Thank you Teri. You are a vary talented teacher. I am just beginning to bead onto leather.
What kind of needle are you using? I would think they have to be small for the beads but be able to penetrate the hide
this makes so much sense! i was trying to figure out how to get my extra-thin beading needles to go through the leather without bending or breaking - apparently you just have to skim it! thank you for explaining this so clearly!
That is exactly what I wanted to know too!
what size needles and beads do you use
What size beads, and what type of needle needle and thread are you using? You do beautiful work!

I'm glad she said that because my dad told me you could tan a squirrel hide with its brains and make a sting from the hide, an old man had shown him when he was young.
Awesome explanation of techniques! Lovely work and very inspirational 🤗
What needles do I buy every ones I’ve bought break or are to thick for 11 size glass bead and I’m beading on flesh side of brain tanned buckskin
At the beginning you say you draw lines, what do you mean by that, draw lines where and with what, you don't describe that or why you draw lines, also how do you start this project, this whole video seemed rushed and not like a lesson at all.

The two needle method looks difficult! You must have strong hands! Thanks for showing how to bead! ~Janet in Canada
Thank you I wondered if you go all the way through now I know to skin the hide and not go all the way through.
This is so sexy, now I gotta put beads on everything I own
Amazing video! Beautiful art and designs, thank you!

Hi Teri, I have a question. What type of thread are you using? It doesn't look like imitation sinew but is stiff like it. Nylon thread?
Red sheet name please

Wowsers, your a great teacher💯👏👏👏🙆♀️
Thank you for sharing, I'm learning so much, from you and the people in the comments!
I'm having trouble with my needles, it seems I need a lot of pressure to push through the hide. Should I try to soften or thin out my hide a bit more?
Jennifer Winsor try sharp needles they are smaller and sharpers for leather work
@@Selina-of2fn I'm using bead needles and leather needles (the ones with the triangle tip) but my bead needles are breaking?
@@jennifercanning3383 I go through lots of needles its normal. Pliers help
Aww, the Boba Fett mocs are adorable!
Your video makes me want to return to bead working.
Is there a way to glue beads onto a pair of suede boots store bought that are super thick

I wonder if the brain and liver is raw or cooked when they use it on the hide.
