Big wave surfing is the ultimate celebration of extreme surfing. Challenging deadly waves in harsh weather and ocean conditions takes a very serious approach.
Big wave surfers are not interested in performance. Forget perfect cutbacks, stunning floaters or breathless aerial antics. The profile of a big wave rider is the result of several unparalleled personal characteristics.
Fear is always present in a 50-foot wave. Fear is the best way of managing the risk of paddling for a huge wave face, which doesn't tell you what is going to happen and how it is going to break.
Monster waves tend to move quickly and force surfers to get away of the powerful whitewater. Big waves are lethal even for the most experienced extreme riders. The best big wave surf spots in the world have claimed several lives in the last decades.
Malik Joyeux, Sion Milosky, Moto Watanabe, Mark Foo, Donnie Solomon, Todd Chesser, Dickie Cross and Peter Davi have passed away in extreme surfing conditions. Wipeouts, severe coral reef injuries and drowning are the most common causes of death in big wave surfing.
The pioneers of big wave surfing started to eye impossible killer rides in the 1940's. In the 1960's, waves like Pipeline and Waimea increased the popularity of paddling into new wave heights. Going over the falls was the daily menu.
Laird Hamilton is the first professional big wave surfer. The waterman from Maui defies fast, hollow and high waves with a full-time training and previous preparation. Hamilton, the father of tow-in surfing, takes on the entire big wave spots of the Hawaiian Islands, in helicopter style.
Laird was born with the gene of defying danger. He designs and prepares his own surfboards and wetsuits. Wherever heavy waves break, Hamilton is there to ride them: Mavericks, Cortes Bank, Dungeons.
Garrett McNamara is one of the toughest big wave challengers. After riding a spectacular 78-foot wave in Nazaré, Portugal, the Hawaiian waterman entered the Guinness World Records with the biggest wave ever surfed.
The 55 best big wave surfers of all time is an exclusive extreme surfing club. From Jaws to Mavericks, Puerto Escondido, Punta Lobos, Ghost Trees, Belharra, Shipstern Bluff and Todos Santos, these riders have set up a new scale in the definition of giant waves. They are:

I was a surfer but nevah did what you folks are doing! but, da Hook, who was the Founder of the Big Island Body Surfing Team/Contests for years and a Judge at the World Body Surfing Contest has a movie script in process based on Jaws as a starting point and a surfer who rides it often. Need a producer and fellow writer to help the concept move forward. I write books and have taught for U of H so know a lil bit. getting old tho and need some energy from the Young and smart. Know anyone? send em my way. I got a few bits of info to get started with and much experience with books and writings... retired and growing kona coffee

Being caught up in that Tehaupo barrel must be the most terrifying feeling ever.
Mate what can i say, Teahupoo is the most heaviest way in world a suction that pulls you in not to mention just 2-3 feet below is razor sharp reef , looks amazing to watch, but i don't think i have enough guts to surf something like that I admire the guys who surf those wave they are amazing, stayed tuned part 3 coming soon :)

I grew in Calif and now living in Florida so I'm always looking for good surfing video clips. Came across this today, and have to say it's the best compilation of big wave surfing I've ever seen. Awesome job putting this together!!!!

Why? Because you never became a surfer? You can't always control where you grow up.
Crazy how long the rides can be at nazare during those massive swells. Most big wave spots have short runs before the wave crumbles or hits deeper water. These guys must get pretty soar in the legs cuz of how balanced they must be, keeping them planted and using them too steer

to you editors... Why do you cut so often before the end of the ride??? Ultimately a video should tell a story. Why are you surf editors cutting out so often before we know if our hero makes it out alive? Please tell the end of the story. We have our entrances and our exits. Both are important.

Brian Thompson so I just made an edit using Adobe Premier. I made sure I trimmed each clip exactly where I wanted it, however when I exported that each clip was cut short a second or so.... I don't think it's being done intentionally. Will research why Adobe is doing that.
Absolutely Flawless I noticed in an edit I made it with adobe premiere, each of my clips was cut a little short as well. I haven't found anything in the forums yet... anxious to hear what you have to say
