    2 years ago, my son and I went squirrel hunting on opening day. We were sitting in chairs in a natural blind we put together when we heard something behind us..Thinking it was turkeys that we see quite a bit in that spot, my son eased around to look at them. It turned out to be a mama bear with 3 cubs! 50 feet from us. She knew we were there because she stood up and looked at us...then just walked off into the woods.

    Great video. I learned many years ago to range everything possible when I first get in a stand, so that I have 3 half circles in front of me, 20 30 and 40. No mater where that deer is, I instantly know the yardage. I have to because I only use one pin.

    It's too bad about the miss but I really can't wait to see part 2. It is really good you're seeing a lot of Deers & signs also the Bobcat with the Mama Bear & cubs. I mentioned it a couple times before always take a sidearm preferably a 10mm into the woods no matter what occasion. You can have it in a shoulder holster so it don't interfere with your saddle or on your pack. Saturday I was helping a friend out getting his cameras also putting up a new tree stand. I gave him one of my pistols & a fixed blade because he forgot his. We saw a big Black Bear about 100 yards from us. I told him next time I won't go if he's not prepared.

    Just a tip, when using saddle set-ups and rope ascenders, always use an oval carabiner. If not, you'll eventually break your ascender because your C-carabiner side loads the weight on your ascender.

    Damn, we have all been there thinking we don't have time to range, but the reality is you always do (imo). Still a very cool encounter though and that is what I love about saddle hunting. Reminds me of how we would hunt in the PNW (Washington), you just scout and find sign, then setup and ambush. You never know what is going to happen, but you feel like it is going to happen at any moment and makes hunts super exciting. This rut I was saddle hunting in a tree in a place I had never hunted before and 8 does came in from a direction I wasn't expecting and caught me off guard. I ended up in a super weird position in the saddle holding my bow for what felt like an hour, they were feeding right under me. Just when I thought i couldn't hold still any longer they left, no shots, but I don't think I would have had that experience without a saddle. Love it!

    Great video. I actually had an awesome and scary situation similar to yours with the bear sighting. I shot a buck several years ago in Novembers archery season and was able to watch the deer bed down and expire. Within minutes I had a momma bear and two cubs walk under my tree and approach my buck. I had no sidearm and only my Hoyt. The momma bear sniffed around my deer and then walked away with her cubs behind her. A truly awesome experience but could have gone bad. I was able to record most of it on my phone. I now always carry a sidearm. You never know what’s going to happen in the big woods of central Pa.

    I don't use the hand warmers or anything like that. But I do have the soft Sitka gloves that only come out once I am sitting up in the 🌳. They stay in a zippered pocket with my thumb release. I keep a pair of great choppers that r attached around my waist just above my saddle. Keeping the Sitka gloves that work great on a 📱screen in my choppers with my bow on a hanger is the only way I keep my hands warm & u could use that hand warmer with those gloves that rarely get cold even though they r very light & in a camo that matches your jacket. I highly recommend them. 👌

  • @YankeeWoodcraft
    @YankeeWoodcraft Рік тому

    I have a love/hate relationship with crunchy leaves. Because I ground hunt exclusively, that gives me plenty of time to hear them before I see them. I love that part. However, walking in, I know I'm going to spook everything and their mother so I just skedaddle in like a running squirrel, then stop, the run in a little, then stop. The thing for me is to get that part out of the way as soon as possible and to get behind some trees and settle in. I just try to sound like other things running around out there, but walking slow screams predation to deer. It's stalking.
    Just a few days ago when I filled my buck tag (tag #3 for the season so far), I did exactly that, I walked in quick then stopped and looked and walked in and stopped. Less than a minute after walking in, no lie, there was probably the 2nd biggest buck I've ever taken 30 yards from my sit. I pulled up on him and sent it. Dragged him out an hour later after a 165 yard blood trail. Heart shot with a shattered shoulder. That monster had stamina.
    Awesome seeing the cat and the bear. My 2nd live bear encounter, I saw a sow and stalked her for 60 yards. When I got up to her and drew my bow, that was when I saw her 3 little bulletproof vests tagging along. I backed out of there and waited her out. That was epic.
    Today, dropping off my buck to the butcher, I darn near hit an 8 pointer (yesterday I almost his a spike and a doe). They're all over the place now. I ❤NY.

    • @YankeeWoodcraft
      @YankeeWoodcraft Рік тому +1

      Oh and how's this for a close encounter;
      When I came upon my sit at around 4:30 in the morning, there were deer sleeping in it! In fact, the matriarch jumped up and turned around and we were facing each other for about 20 minutes or so just 6 feet apart! I was frozen in place in the dark, heart pounding through my chest. Eventually, she backed up once the other does had walked off. We couldn't see each other, but I could see her outline.
      On the ground, they're either too close or too far! LOL

    excellent video! might I recommend PRE-RANGING specific land marks for range when you first arrive! I usually range 20-30, 40 and 50! you can log it, memorize it, whatever you feel most comfortable with!!

    Do you use any scent attractants during your hunts? If so, do you think its effective or hasn't really changed your odds any? Always enjoy you guys content!

    What a bummer to have missed that buck, but experiences! Great video, I found your UA-cam this year and have been watching ever since. I know the frustration of missing a buck, especially with a gun. I shot mine and hit his leg and only found bone fragments. Your buck is still out there, there's always next year! Also, how does your Stealthcam have such clear smooth transition on videos? When I use video, it is slow and each time I see the deer, it has teleported to a new spot within that video? I have the Stealthcam Fusion X.

    Awesome video as always. Please give The Hunting Public channel a watch. They also hunt mainly with bow and saddle. They way they approach where to hang a stand or saddle is very informative. I'm from South Africa and I have learned so much even though we hunt big game such as Lion, hippo, cape buffalo, leopard and elephant kudu gemsbok ect. They are fun to watch good ethical hunter that know their trade. I'm not saying the way you hunt is wrong at all. Keep up the good work 👍😁😁😁👍👍

    You could bring a can of bear spray. Then you wouldnt needlessly orphan three cubs.

    So, I have been in your boots many times. You have rattle daddy and I've had him and grunt man. I swear the dude thought he was calling ducks! The cool part about that is if you pay close attention like the deer do, you'll see that the deer simply find a way around these idiots. The challenge was always trying to predict where the guy was going to be. This was neighboring private land, but same same. All you have to do is find the seam that the bucks used to bypass these people based on the wind and you are golden. Believe it or not. When these people over hunt their stands it actually becomes much easier to hunt the target bucks because their attention is focused on the obvious threat and not you. Worst day of my life was when I found out that the land I had permission to hunt for over 20 years had been sold and I didn't even know it was for sale. Turns out the guy who bought it had the ins with a big real-estate broker who knew how to lay it on thick and get the pressure up to convince people to list properties. That is their job after all.
