In English and Japanese they are called Fatui because it is Latin for "fools" (I think partly because the Harbingers are named after "Commedia dell'arte" characters). 9:23 "Ad astra abyssosque" is Latin for "To the stars and the abyss", I think the meaning is similar in the other languages. You see "ad astra" in various mottos for things, like "Ad astra per aspera" (to the stars through hardship)
I cannot speak for Japanese or Chinese, but in Korean Katherine literally says; "face the stars and the abyss" so it matches the Latin version. Also the Korean term for Fatui "우인단" means "group of fool" based on the Chinese characters. In the video they mentioned how 인 means human/person. That still applies in the Korean version of the word, it's just not at the end but in the middle. :D
So the name "Fatui" is given by the Jester Pierro. There is a story behind it. You can find it in the artifact Mocking Mask's description: "Since the stain of my compatriots' blood cannot be cleansed, I shall become The Jester, who laughs in the face of fate. Since my level of learning could not compare with the sages, I failed to earn the favor of the previous ruler. So too did I fail to stop them from tearing away the veil of sin, ushering in a tide of divine wrath, destruction, and foolishness... Then I shall become instead a fool, a Fatuus, and devote myself to Her Majesty, who understands my pain..." So the sages he's referring to are dignitaries of Khaenri'ah. Before Khaenri'ah's destruction, Pierro was against those sage's policy, but the ruler of Khaenri'ah didn't listen to him and favored the sages, which ultimately led to the destruction of Khaenri'ah. Pierro then became a follower of Tsaritsa, and named themselves the fools, because he hates sages and will never follow their path.
Favonius is also taken from a roman myth name, Favonio. (which was probably favonius in latin, can't be sure cause i didn't research it) The point is the game developer should really put some effort into using the right pronunciation if they want to use other countries names. Why using italian english japanese names, if then you make them sound chinese? is totally useless.
Kid you not, I had no clue what Ad astra abyssosque meant until I saw the Chinese characters(native English speaker who's learning Chinese). "向着星辰与深渊" Translation is the exact same as the Korean one lol.
I personally prefer Itto’s English VA bc while his character suits the gruff voice, I think his English VA represents his himbo personality the best (and he also won me over with the beatboxing LMAO)
Indeed and not only that , Itto's VA has do a lot of characters that are my favourite , specially Jimmy from the universe of DC in Lego DC villains and in series
@@nemdelrosario2901 The chinese Itto VA is also the real itto. If you watch his stream playing genshin he's a crackhead himbo too. And his laugh is also infectious.
They will find similarities with pronounciation in Liyue characters. Because their names are in Chinese = Koreans and Japanese tend to just translate them into their respective hanja/kanji sino-reading pronunciation, just like; Beidou (Bukdu/Hokuto), Ningguang (Eunggwang, Gyoukou), Xiao (So/Shou), Ganyu (Gamu, Kanu), Chongyun (Jungun, Chouun) Zhongli (Jungryeo, Shouri) etc... WITH the exception of Xingqiu which was not read with Sino-Japanese/Onyomi pronunciation being "Yukuaki" instead of "Koushuu" AND Qiqi which is read "Nana" instead of "Shichishichi". Inazuma characters' name are in Japanese so they have no translation in Korean so they just read it the same way as the Japanese, only the Chinese read Inazuma characters' name in Chinese due to their Hanzi pronunciation like; Kamisato Ayaka = Shenli Linghua Kamisato Ayato = Shenli Lingren Arataki Itto = Huanglong Yidou Kaedehara Kazuha = Fenyuan Wanye Yoimiya = Xiaogong Yae Miko = Bachong Shenzi. etc.
Xingqiu makes him different from the rest of Liyue characters. Him being Yukuaki in Japanese can have him be mistaken to be from Inazuma xD I guess Koushuu probably sounds unnatural? Or is it the Japanese just pronounces 行 and 秋 more in their native reading?
@@ChikyuuKun Nana is cute so I let it slide, but I have NO idea why Xingqiu has to be called Yukuaki... so dumb. Koushuu/ Anshuu/ Gyoushuu are perfectly acceptable Sino-Japanese readings for a fictional name anyway... or they could've just mimicked the modern Putonghua pronunciation like "Shinchuu" as they did with Hutao & Xiangling. Dunno why a Liyue native would have a "Japanese" name LAAAAWL.
@@ChikyuuKun kanji usually have two types of sounds. One is derived from the ancient Chinese pronunciation; one is from its original/literal meaning. Previous Chinese-style names are from the Chinese pronunciations. But Xingqiu is not. I don’t play the game but I think 1. the pronunciation might be common for names in Japanese 2. Xing Qiu means “acting out autumn” or “to be autumn.” Maybe bc the translation focus on the meaning it might be related to this character’s life purpose/ personality in some ways? (Or have connections with characters whose names are Japanese) I don’t play games so I might be totally wrong
My God. This cmt need to ơn Top. This so true. Even in Vietnam we can translate Chinese ad Japanese characters name. But we use "abcd..xyz" in ours word, so the translater just bring full name of them in English like "xinqiu", "ayaka"... Even they can translate to "Hành Thu", " Lăng Hoa" similar Chinese pronounce.
Actually all the four language are pretty similar. It's either it got translated into other language (like Kazuha and Ayaka in CN, or Xingqiu and Keqing in JP), or just take it as it is like Xiao and Zhongli. EN Dub mostly take in all languages as it is

I also think they should’ve also added an German or Dutch Speaker for the Mondstadt characters, as most of their names have Germanic origin with a completely different pronouncation than English-Germanic. I hope they could make an part 2 with Sumeru characters and Mondstadt characters as well!! Overall this video was so much fun to watch ^^
3:00 - I think the reason why his name is displayed in full is because Kazuha comes from a renowned clan in Inazuma, much like "Kamisato" is attached to Ayaka and Ayato, Kujou Sara being part of the "Kujou" clan and all of these household names hold importance during the quests in Inazuma. Another reasoning might be is for Kazuha being based off from samurais in real life, and historically they are to hold last names distinctively, the japanese common folk don't take in surnames at that said time until the meiji govt. required them to have family names. (but not entirely sure correct me on this one lol)
It's so interesting to see Genshin on Dave's channel. Never thought I'll see my favourite game here 😁 I play with Japanese VO, but it's so nice to see the differences between all languages.
The game isn’t even Japanese and I assume you’re not Japanese, why aren’t you playing it either its original language (chinese) or English (which I would assume you understand better?)
What's super interesting about the Chinese dub is that most are mostly streamers. There are many who pretty much got their start on Genshin voice acting, while you can find some also who have a very decent sized resume already.
For the record I also lost my 50/50 to Jean lol. Was not expecting a Genshin video after seeing a picture of Dave with a Keqing cosplayer. Chongyun has always and will always be my main even if he's in a team with Kokomi, Shenhe and Ayaka who can easily outshine him.

9:28 the chinese pronounciation makes me wonder if she was maybe supposed to be called Kaiserin instead of Katheryne. Since Mondstadt is inspired by Germany and Kaiserin means Empress in German (maybe they looked up random German words), whereas Katherine isnt even a German name, at least not pronounced like that 🤔
This video was so much fun!! I really have to go back to play Genshin, in fact, I'll download the latest update right now. Please make a part two with the other characters, my boy Razor got left out :(
The official English pronunciation does pronounce zhong li with “zh (like j in jam)” though. Actually all Liyue names are almost the same as Chinese names, but obviously they don’t pronounce it perfectly because they don’t speak mandarin.
So for Japanese and Chinese origin characters they actually used the same characters(letters) from original language and read it in the respective language? Like for example, Kazuha's name is written same way in Japanese and Chinese but it read Kaedehara Kazuha in Japanese while something else in Chinese. Similar for Xinqui, it reads Xinqui in Chinese but something else in Japanese? That's soo cool
Japan didn't have a written language until they adopted Chinese characters, which they call Kanji (with some modifications). There are different pronunciation of Kanji - one that matches the Japanese meaning of the word, and one that sounds like the Chinese pronunciation from dynasties ago. So I can watch Sailor Moon and read all the characters' Kanji names in Chinese pronunciation.
@@cart172 yeah ik. But is that why the characters have different names in Genshin though? That's my doubt. Like, if a character is from Liyue, it will be a Chinese name and so it will be written in Chinese script. If a character is from Inazuma, it is written in kanji. But when reading, all names are read in japanese pronounciation in Japanese dub and Chinese pronounciation in Chinese dub regardless of where they are from. For example,Kamisato Ayaka is a clear japanese name but in Chinese dub, they just read it in Chinese pronounciation. I hope I'm making sense because idk a better way to explain it
I probably understand what you mean Sorry, my English is not that good(( QAQ)) try to translate!~ For the names of people and places in Japan and South Korea, China has always ignored their pronunciation, but used Chinese pronunciation to read their Chinese character writing. If there is no Chinese character writing, a Chinese character writing must be created. This is because Chinese people are very familiar with Chinese characters, and the corresponding relationship between Chinese characters and pronunciation is also deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. People in different dialect areas of China use common Chinese characters to refer to the same person or place, but their pronunciations are different. The pronunciation of Japanese and Korean names and place names is a natural extension of this processing method For example, when Kazuha is written in Chinese characters, it becomes (枫(representing the maple leaf)原万叶(The last word means leaf) fēng yuán wàn yè ),but choosing a Chinese name will also have something to do with this character!

I needed this lmao I’ve always watched your videos and I’m a huge genshin fan
I missed these kind of videos with Erina♡♡♡
벤티의 경우엔 붕2,붕3에서는 웬디로 나옵니다.그래서 중국어로 웬디가 된거에요(라이덴 메이->라이덴 에이 처럼 비슷하게)
또 한국어는 한자 그대로,영어 일본어는 음역인 점도 다르네요
ㅋㅋㅋ우와 제 장르... ㅠㅠ데입님이 광고해주시는군요
omg! tammy was my top pick on girls planet!!
I hope I'm making sense because idk a better way to explain it
@@newbie4789 you are correct
I probably understand what you mean
Sorry, my English is not that good(( QAQ))
try to translate!~
For the names of people and places in Japan and South Korea, China has always ignored their pronunciation, but used Chinese pronunciation to read their Chinese character writing. The pronunciation of Japanese and Korean names and place names is a natural extension of this processing method
For example, when Kazuha is written in Chinese characters, it becomes (枫(representing the maple leaf)原万叶(The last word means leaf) fēng yuán wàn yè ),but choosing a Chinese name will also have something to do with this character!
