Mopars used to use the 83/4 rear drop out center chunk, very stout. I put one in my Dart back in the day with a Dana Power lock sure grip. My 318 never broke it and I could spin both tires. I bet the dif in that thing is 7.5 or so so definitely a weak link. The muscle cars got the Dana 60, very heavy but practically unbreakable in a street car.
My 06 Charger RT uses the same setup as your challenger except maybe the parts are more beefed up to take 700hp in yours. Probably pretty hard to swap to something older and stronger and no more independent rear suspension.
It was go to break no matter what you would think the dirt would be less resistance
So if it was still a street set up it definitely would have broke
