I sometimes wonder how unstable Syd Barrett truly was at this time. This is December,1967 and Syd sounds very lucid! His Guitar playing is excellent! His voice sounds as good as ever! What a Psychedelic track with such cool lyrics! Very 60's. Syd's work was truly way ahead of it's time!!! There is no doubt that ROGER KEITH "SYD" BARRETT was the most original, coolest and most charismatic British Pop/Rock Star ever!!!

In my opinion, he never went mad. Just by listening to Barrett, Madcap Laughs, Opel (which are post-Floyd works) you can see he was really lucid and ready to produce art (or by playing and singing or painting). My thought is that LSD contributed to his emancipation with all the fame and consequences that would go if he continued in PF; as he once said: All I wanted to do was jump around and play my guitar. He was an artist (formed as which in College), he was not a rock star and didn't want to be.

      I totally agree.
There’s a bootleg of them in Rotterdam the day after they played the last show of their supposedly disastrous American tour at the Cheetah Club in NYC. His playing is strident and inventive as ever. If he was such a mess, how could he be so together a day later?
This BBC session was from December 20th 1967. Barely two weeks later they stopped picking him up for gigs because he was too out of it.
Yet: He sounds great, his playing is spot on, and while Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream are somewhat odd songs, they’re performed extremely well.
We have recordings from September, October, November, and December of that year. He is not just competent, but still the band’s driving force live. But yet we’ve been told he was incapable of performing and it was impossible for them to carry on with him.
I think Syd just didn’t want to play the game and was more concerned with the artistic side of things while the rest of the band got a taste of success and being career minded, resented Barrett for his refusal to go on TV and mime songs or his preference for experimental jams over playing “Arnold Layne” and “See Emily Play” for crowds who really had no idea what they were about.

@@Tyrannosaurine Even so, once Syd was out what did the rest of PF do? Start focusing on experimental instrumental jam songs & eventually they stopped playing the "radio friendly" numbers altogether. They said they didn't want to try making radio songs anymore...Until, ironically, the song 'Money' became a hit.

Remember, there's no such thing as a gateway drug, only a gateway mental illness. His father died when he was only 16 so there was issues in the making

Chad Kreiberg You know, I've seen images of Syd's father, Dr Max Barrett, and Syd so resembles him! Dr. Barrett seemed like such a wonderful man and a very strong force in Syd's life and it must have been so traumatic losing his father at a such a young age in his teens. I agree, the loss of his father could have caused his mental illness. Barrett also rebelled against the Pop process of appearing on Pop Television shows miming to the Floyd's hits, touring and being pressured into writing more hit singles. I think the year 1967 took it's toll on Barrett.

In yellow shoes I get the blues
Though I walk the streets with my plastic feet
With my blue velvet trousers, make me feel pink
There's a kind of stink about blue velvet trousers
In my paisley shirt I look a jerk
And my turquoise waistcoat is quite out of sight
But oh oh my haircut looks so bad
    Vegetable man how are you?
So I've changed my dear, and I find my knees,
And I covered them up with the latest cut,
And my pants and socks all point in a box,
They don't make long of my nylon socks,
    The watch, black watch
My watch with a black face
And a big pin, a little hole,
And all the lot is what I got,
It's what I wear, it's what you see,
It must be me, it's what I am,
    Vegetable man
I've been looking all over the place for a place for me,
But it ain't anywhere, it just ain't anywhere
    Vegetable man, vegetable man,
He's the kind of person, you just gonna see him if you can,

This doesn't sound at all like the work of someone who was unstable or impaired. Syd is driving the band in this song; they're all rushing to keep up. Listen to the riff he unleashes at 1:53 -- he's spot on with his playing. I don't hear anything in this recording that makes me think of Syd being at the end of his mental string...he sounds very driven, very capable and "on". Not the work of someone who was slipping into insanity, I don't think.

Hello Lucas, You know, I just don't know who's making the decisions in Pink Floyd's management! I mean, did they really have to remix, in 2010, Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream? I believe it was David Gilmour who did the remixes. The original mixes are far superior and are on UA-cam. Gilmour did an excellent remix of Matilda Mother, also in 2010, in that he centered Nick Mason's Drums which added more punch!, and he added a verse not included on the original album! This was released on the Barrett Best Of - "An Introduction to Syd Barrett" release. That CD also has a "Stereo" version of "Apples And Oranges" which also wasn't released on "The Early Years" - 1965-1972. I wish Gilmour had remixed the whole "Piper" album! I like to hear a similar remix done especially on Lucifer Sam! I've always hated drums being mixed in either the left or right speakers! It makes the track sound so much weaker. That was also done to The Beatles' Stereo mixes as well as all the other British Pop group releases. I've always believed the Drums should be mixed in the center!!! The remix of the "Live Pompeii version of "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" was also disappointing.

Hello Lucas, Thank You for your positive reply to my comments regarding the late Syd Barrett! I'm a big fan of Syd and every time time I listen to "Flaming", my favorite track on "Piper", it brings me a lot of joy but then I feel melancholy knowing what would eventually happen to him. I think he was Blessed with immense talent and charisma. What a tragedy!!! Regarding "The Madcap Laughs", I find it hard to believe that Roger Waters and David Gilmour produced, in my humble opinion, the worst tracks on the album! Malcolm Jones produced - Terrapin, Here I Go and Love You which are my personal favorites amongst others. Waters and Gilmour produced - Dark Globe, Long Gone, If It's In You, She Took A long Cold Look and -Feel - It is unforgivable that this track made it on to the album!!! It is a portrait of a mental breakdown. I blame Waters and Gilmour in that they had taken over production of the sessions from Malcolm Jones in May,1969. Can you believe Waters and Gilmour refused, after 50 long years, to officially release the two Psychedelic Barrett masterpieces - "Scream Thy Last Scream" and "Vegetable Man" citing they were both portraits of Barrett's mental decline!!! Unbelievable! You know, Gilmour helped produce the most recent "Best Of" Syd Barrett solo material and found the excellent "Bob Dylan's Blues" in the vaults. Now, that track should have been released on "The Madcap Laughs" solo album back in 1970! There obviously was a lack of care by Waters and Gilmour to find the best tracks on "The Madcap Laughs" sessions to release back in 1970. Please read the excellent "The madcap Laughs" Wikipedia biography. It explains everything including recording dates.R.I.P. ROGER KEITH "SYD" BARRETT.All The Best! R.I.P.Raul.

Actually “Bob Dylan Blues” was recorded during the Barrett sessions. However he cut Opel, maybe the best song Syd had at the time, from the album.
Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and say the song wasn’t finished. Then why wasn’t it revived for Barrett. What “producer” cuts the best song from an album?
They released that ramshackle set of songs at the end of Madcap while they passed up on:
      -“Opel”
      -“Silas Lang”,
-“Vegetable Man” and “Scream Thy Last Scream” (both projected to be worked on for album along with…)
      -“She Was A Millionaire”,
-Lanky pt 1 and 2 (pt 1 rules!)
-“Rhamadam” (which could’ve easily been edited down into a decent 4-5 minute jam
Furthermore, on the second album they again passed up on using any of that left over material, much of which is good and already finished (you’d think if he was THAT hard to get a take out of they might consider using any of the 8 tracks they already had in the can or close.
They supposedly went as far as recording vocals for “She Was A Millionaire” and didn’t use it.
They also decided against working any further on the following songs that had real potential, rather releasing “Maisie”, a plodding uninspired blues with inaudible, mumbled lyrics:
      -“Dolly Rocker”
      -“Let’s Split”
      -“Birdie Hop”
      -“Milky Way”
-“Living Alone”, the demo of which David Gilmour took the master tapes for and never returned them.
Syd had also performed the song “Two of a Kind” on the BBC, which is a delightful little pop song and could’ve been used, presuming it’s not a Rick Wright song (though I doubt he’d care and was producing and playing on the record).
There’s also “Untitled” (or “untitled words” or “word song”), which honestly is the one song I agree with them keeping from the record.
Supposedly at some point (according to Emo Moore, a friend of Syd’s/member of the Cambridge set/Dave Gilmour’s house sitter and roommate) Syd came to Gilmour’s place to work on more material.
So in summation, we got bad takes and some lackluster material but for some reason missed out on:
      “Vegetable Man”
      “Scream Thy Last Scream”
      “She Was A Millionaire”
      “Swan Lee/Silas Lang”
      “Opel”
      “Lanky pt 1”
      “Lanky pt 2”
      “Rhamadam”
      “Bob Dylan Blues”
      “Living Alone”
      “Dolly Rocker”
      “Let’s Split”
      “Untitled”
      “Milky Way”
      “Birdie Hop”
      “Two of a Kind”
Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more.
It’s a damn shame. The public missed out on some gems and Syd was made to look like a bumbling fool.

Such a good song making fun of the hip trendiness of the degenerating fads of people and their attachment to the dying exoteric. Like a flower all seemingly new expressions are born in beauty only to be admired, mimicked and commercialized into a zombie like form of walking death where the dead is worshipped as living and the living feared as dead.

Syd's Guitar work is very inventive and with more aggression. I love it!!! I must say hypnotic! Now I know what this track sounded like at 1967 live shows and not like the "A Saucerful Of Secrets" which is cool with Rick Wright's Organ and Vibes but only David Gilmour appears at the end of the track and briefly! Alternate take of Bike, Let’s Roll Another One, Intremental, Early Morning Henry, alternate Lucifer Sam, alternate Chapter 24, complete 1967 BBC Sessions, studio version of Reaction in G, 2 alternate versions of Vegetable Man, whatever the “sunshine” bit is from, the Vegetable Man Jam from a rehearsal, Either October 66 or January 67 rumored unreleased recordings of either Arnold Layne or Candy and Currant Bun coupled with an unheard song called I Get Stoned that could be an early song that Peter Jenner knew well enough to recite some of the lyrics. Possibly One in a Million (not to be confused with She Was a Millionaire) ever got recorded (a live version exists of what seems like a Roger Waters sung song with a hypnotic/heavy/doomy guitar riff. The song has been described as “Proto-Punk”), Demo of Swan Lee. And visually it would’ve been incredibly to get that backstage footage of the 5 man Floyd no matter how short. Strongly rumored audio of one or more shows at the Fillmore or Winterland by either Stanley “Bear” Owsley or Bill Graham.
There’s a unique studio version of “Interstellar Overdrive” briefly heard in Newsreel Footage from January 1967, supposedly Anthony Stern and Peter Whitehead each filmed the 67 Floyd live, there is on stage a professional video camera literally a couple feet in front of Syd during their legendary performance at dawn at the 14 Hour Technicolor Dream, lost performances on TV of See Emily Play/the Perry Como show/an appearance on Boss City/a television performance in Rotterdam/a televised performance from a show at the Cheetah Club in Santa Monica, footage shot by the BBC for a news story early in the year, footage shot for the movie Dope, any number of shows at UFO that are constantly being speculated upon, rehearsal footage shot by the photographer who shot them on a stairwell and with psychedelic lights projected on a sheet in someone’s bedroom, footage of other acts exists from the Christmas on Earth Revisited show that wrapped up the Hendrix tour (in fact there is an extremely brief and silent clip of them from this show, occasionally mentioned rumored audio/video from the pivotal Games For May show, whatever else was captured in December 67 from the video of the band lounging around and loosely jamming on Green Onions.
That’s just what we know. Surely there is more we are unaware of.
What possible reason is there for not releasing all of it by now? What are they waiting for? They’re not getting any younger and there was the perfect vehicle to do so with the Early Years Box.
PF have always been extremely stingy with unreleased material and I’m afraid most, if not all, of that material is resigned to the dustbin of history now.
The only thing I could possibly imagine getting released is an official release of the best quality available BBC recordings from 1967. Maybe.

@@bryantcuriel1641 that’s only for television performances (although I think the Tops of the Pops versions of See Emily Play have live vocals on a pre-recorded backing track.
These are from radio BBC Sessions where the band would come into the BBC’s studio and do quick, stripped down recordings of their songs. So, technically it’s not live at all. Though, especially at the time, there’s a better than good chance the music is a live band take and they overdubbed vocals on that.

Syd still had it and even his solo tracks shared the same odd meters and quirky lyrics / phrasing. Take away the Mandrax from the first solo album and spend some time working the arrangements up like the Syd Floyd stuff and it would sound very similar.

I would argue that Nick was a far better drummer in the early days than he exhibited once they hit it big. Aside from the Animals tour, his drumming after 1972 got progressively less and less energetic and lacked the vitality it had in the early days. Having said that, the In the Flesh tour he sounds great and I respect the shit out of him for still playing concerts, especially playing the earlier more energetic material on his own.

Suena a PInk Floyd.
