Beautiful solo! Not crazy speed or uncanny chops, just a purely musical solo that was thought out, inspirational, satisfying and so emotionally sound! Gotta love Tony Williams!
Yes!! Always inspirational to me. And so dynamic and melodic. I LOVE that. I am however not sure if it was thougth out, I believe (could be wrong), that he was just composing "on the spot". Nevertheless, such and amazing solo.
Reginald, you are so right. Tony was a very grooving musical player. His playing is simply beautiful. Jazz suffered when Tony passed too early in life. RIP Tony.
That's what makes his drumming so amazing it's not about how fast you can go around the kit it's just excellent Melody Grace and Agility around the drum set. You don't have to be the fastest drummer in the world to be an absolute King on the drums just incredible feeling layering and linear playing another guy that has a similar style to him is Steve Smith. They both have very tribal spirits
“Composes on the spot”. You’re absolutely right about that! I think that’s what I love best about TW. It’s like there’s something important and meaningful he has to say with his instrument. Thanks for sharing!
He was so earthy, grounded yet on the edge. And as you say. You get the impression like he really had something to say on the instrument each time. Such a unique presence. On of the all time greats for sure. 😀❤️
His solos were all that I transcribed for Improv. Class while in college, beginning with 7 steps to Heaven. I’ll never understand why Zildjian discontinued his signature 2B hickory drum sticks.
I’ve only watched this about a dozen times! Lol We studied this solo in my lesson yesterday, taking ideas from TW’s use of the Swiss Army Triplet. There’s so much to absorb here. I keep coming back!
Fantastic! !Yes, those swish army triplets he uses quite a lot in his soloing. And how his toms (and snare) are so perfectly tuned for his way of melodic playing. You just get absorbed into it.
Really nice! No chops; the drumming is not a speed contest the kids don't understand this I just want to worry around the drums fast as I can bang everything very sad this is excellent! Melody on the drums rules very few drummers understand that a solo is a song!
Yes, I really dig this period from 1989 - this and the New York concert from same year is just amazing!! I remember I saw that on TV at the time (and I was more of a rocker, but was just floored with what I heard. So inspirational). Hope all is well with you too Todd!
@@sturla75 100% agree Sturla!.......I have watched that N.Y. concert sooooooooooo many times, LOL!!!!!.. ..We certainly live in different musical times NOW... B U T, these archieve fantastic footages/concerts/videos remind us of ALL & WHY the greats NEED to be studied/understood and, repected ALL THE TIME for their MASSIVE drumming contributions to THIS day for all of us to have learned by.......My old (late Russ Moy) drum teacher in N.J. was great friends with Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Ed Shaughnessy, Bernard Purdie, etc etc, etc.....on and on and on....... I am so thankful for his studies, insight, talent and knowledge he gave me to this day & EVERDAY!!!!!!!...Have a super day Sturla!
@@toddwalkerdrumstudio Yeah, so cool to stumble upon these historical footages. And the uniqueness they all had back then, as opposed to how it is now. But we can still be so inspired about them - I mean I just so often think of Tony when soloing and for his earthiness, and explosiveness and dynamics. Also great hearing that about about your old drum teacher. Wow!! My warmest to you Todd!! :-)
Forgot about Tony's chops with the ability to move effortlessly through the rudiments; just listen to this man's melodicism on the drums and his use of dynamics to create a piece of music on the drums. He was incredible.
Influenced by his contemporaries (Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Miles Davis ,etc.) Tony developed a technique and style that engulfed the music. He was part of the new age of jazz rock that propelled power and improvisation at his level. We all stood at attention when he played and soloed. Drummer's will be influenced by his talent for a " Lifetime."❤
Tony loved the drums, genuine love.
What a wonderful musician!
There are no words just TONY!🎉
Yeah. TONY!! True artist.
Absolutely like no one else😊😊😊

@@reginalddavis7578 Fantastic!! Have a great day! :-)

Excatly! It is not a contest! It is about creating music - no matter what instrument you are soloing on.
Thank you for your words 😊( I agree )
🙏😀
all true, but this is crazy chops.
Yeah his stick control and creativity is awesome 🥁🔥🥁💎🥁💎🥁🤘 3:53
This ENTIRE Concert/Solo with Tony W. is a classic, fantastic show concert!!!!!...........Hope
all is well Sturla!...Sincerely,Todd Walker

One of a kind!!
Its beautiful music played with drums , spiritual and uplifting ,😂😂
Exactly!!
Naaaaah
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!😀
🥁Tony🦸♂️
Yes Tooony!!!❤️
Turned the drum kit into a piano! Love the batter heads on the bottom of the toms, very 80's!
Yeah! So melodic and he is one of the reasons I’ve digging those black dot heads lately.
like you say, melodic. the opposite of a "noisy" drummer...lovely.
Thanks! So musical. Always.
sublime, thank you ❤
Glad you like it!
❤ Musical. I miss him too.
Me too. So great he was.
Definitely the most unique drum solo I've ever heard since there's absolutely zero cymbal or high hat usage, it's more like a song for the tom toms.
Yes, so melodic and dynamic!!! Pure poetry on the drums.
or kick. i believe.

One of the all times greats!! I unfortunately never got to see him play. A true artist on the drums!
Thank you!! ❤❤❤
You are welcome!!
just noticed tony is using almost like timpani grip . when he comps he goes back to traditional grip.
Yeah. I saw that too now. Thanks.
Nice 😊've subscribed 👍🤝😊
Thank you so much 😊
@sturla75 you're welcome 😊
이런 솔로는 처음 ㅋㅋㅋ 두드림 👏👏👏
Hey it’s your kit he’s playing on 🤯
Hehe 😀 Tony was one of my inspirations for choosing this color.
Amazing sólo?............😂😂😂😂😂
Desde que apareció Denis Chambers dejaron de sorprenderme los bateristas. . . De cualquier época..
Saludos!
I heard a little bit of love supreme around 2:30
Lest we forget "Drum Suite" by Art Blakey
The dumbest thing I've done...sold my tony Williams yellow gretsch rock set...never again...
Wow!! Oh my…
There are dozens and new great sets out there.
That's like telling your best friend that " there are plenty of fish in the sea" after he looses the love of his life ! 💔😆😉
reminds me a bit of a good mrdngam solo. see palghat mani iyer, e.g.
Not one of those “hit everything in site and as fast as you can” solos !
Why is this RARE? Its not!
Where does it say it's rare? 😮
Every single note that he plays Sounds tedious Like he's really bored of him self
Appropriation 💩
