Just got mine and played it for the first time today. Love the paddle so far! Great power and touch around the net is so easy. The smaller cell size really gives the paddle a plush feel without sacrificing power. Spot on about the stock grip though. Not a fan at all but I add an overgrip to mine so not a factor. Would absolutely recommend this paddle.
I know some have had some issues with the owner in the past. I think more will talk about it on their podcasts. I know Chris from pickleball studio also takes January off.
Being it already has a 120 swingweight I wonder what yours jumped up to with the lead you placed on the sides? Also how is the dwell time and feel of the surface?
I tried the original Series 3 (still own) after playing with the Engage Pursuit Pro and Pro 1 for over a year. I found the lower power and higher swing weight to be difficult to adapt to. After playing with the Series 3 for about 2-months, I ordered the new Series 4, Project Roadrunner, and found it to be a much better fit for my game. Lighter swing weight, more power, and generally a better feeling paddle. I added 2.5 grams of weight on both sides of the throat and 1 gram on both top corners and the sweet spot and the overall feel of the paddle improved significantly. I did notice that the grip was very shiny/slick and felt tried out after removing the plastic wrap. I have compared the Series 4 to the Spartus Olympus and find them to be very similar although I would expect the Proton surface to be more durable. Comparing the Series 4 to the new Ronbus Ripple, the Ripple has more pop, is very easy to reset from the transition zone and requires almost no effort to execute drops from anywhere on the court. The Series 4 is also easy to execute drops, but along with resets does require a bit more precise contact point. The ripple, on the other hand does have a lot of pop at low swing speeds which can make control at the kitchen a bit more challenging. As with the Spartus, I expect the Series 4 to have a more durable face.
So Proton is big on durable products and some of their pros have not used more than 2 paddles the whole year coz theyre that good quality but is it going to be the same with the flamingo since its a gen 3 construction is the durability and spin gonna be lasting as roadrunner ??
@@laypatel7617 here’s my honest opinion. I think the grit lasts longer on the series 3 than other paddles. I experienced this myself on my prototype and so far on my production model. My core has held up just fine but there are people that hit much harder than me. What I do know is Proton is pretty consumer friendly on warranties with paddles. Especially if the core were to break. What's the difference of this one and the other one you showed in this video, with the white edge guard? Are they the same, albeit different color scheme? Have you tried their series 4 paddle yet? Curious the difference between that one and this 3. Thanks!
The white edgeguard one in the video was the prototype of the Flamingo. Which was skinned as the original series 3. They made 50 units and put stickers on the bottom. New core with the old design. So yes same paddle just early production model for the pros and a select few to play test. The series 4 is a very fun paddle. One of the lightest swing weights for an elongated paddle on the market. The sweet spot isn’t the biggest on the series 4, but I improved it with adding lead tape on the lower throat. Also, the series 4 is edgeless vs the flamingo has an edgeguard which adds weight, but also helps the stability of the paddle. Lastly, the flamingo hits significantly harder with the new core.
Awesome JJ! I don’t think I caught this if you mentioned but bc gen3 and trampoline type propulsion core… did the paddle seem to break in or get hotter? You’ve been playing with prototype probably longer than anyone so you’d know
I haven’t noticed anything too crazy with it. The prototype feels in a great spot. The Flamingo if I had to guess shouldn’t see too big of a change in my experience. I’ve only heard of one delaminating, but it was an issue out of the box and was replaced quickly.
Update. I have heard now of 3 paddles that have delaminated. 2 in the first week of play by high level pros, and the other out of the box. That said, the nanotac never wears off. I just can’t imagine spending over $200 on a carbon surface that WILL wear off. I don’t love high swing weights, but sometimes it’s actually easier to dink and drop as the paddle will do most of the work for you. Was hoping this came somewhere in the 115-118 SW area because hand speed with 120+ paddles is not good.
Very similar with a slight lean towards the mod. I also added 2 grams of weight on each side to help with the stability and open up the sweet spot more.

In terms of grit to the touch the Proton has been better. The crbn seems to get most of its spin from the added dwell time of the core. The flamingo gets its spin like a Joola 3s.
CX has a 5.75 inch handle vs the Flamingos 5.25. The power is similar between the two but the pop is much higher on the Flamingo. Grit is also much higher on the Flamingo but both paddles spin very well. Sweet spot is much larger on the Flamingo than the TKO-CX and TKO-C
@@JJPickleball Sorry for the confusion. I currently have the Bantam 12.7 TKOCX - this would be my first proton. I played with the original Joola Gen 3 before those two.
I can attest to the quality of protons paddles. I have a couple series 1, a series 3, and a series 4. I have put a lot of hours on those paddles and lent them out for people to try…. The nanotac doesn’t degrade, the carbon fiber on the series 3 is basically just as gritty as the day I got it, and the carbon/kevlar has barely lost any grit. I’ve turned a few people onto their paddles and they’ve all been happy customers. In my honest opinion, they seem to actually use higher quality materials and thus their stuff lasts a long time and is worth the extra $
Thanks for the comment! It’s just nice to know if I recommend a proton paddle and the customer receives a dud that Proton will replace it to ensure the long lasting quality that first year.
The Flamingo has a hotter core. The Flamingo also has an edgeguard which helps with a larger sweet spot and protecting the paddle from as much damage. The Roadrunner is lighter due to the edgeless design. The flamingo is carbon fiber face and the roadrunner is Kevlar.

Tricky one to answer. In my experience the spin potential with the series 1 is higher, but the ease of access to spin is easier with the Flamingo. I am also more confident in the spin staying higher with the series 1.
@@edwardmiller9062I know they are tinkering. The issue is if they increase power the spin rate goes through the roof making it fail certification. So they need to adjust something to be able to release an upgrade of the series 1.
@@LukasLwMYou’re telling me. I was told “Monday no matter what” for the release. Looking like the holiday may have messed things up on the backend. Should be tomorrow 🤞🏼
They haven’t. It’s just in their series 1 line. They just launched (about to) redesigned series 1 paddles and signature paddles for their pros. However, they can’t use this core with the nanotech surface because it surpassing the legal limit for spin by a mile.
@ I had to look this up. USAP has a limit on roughness via the Starrett tester, but not on RPMs. I’m assuming that you’re stating that Nanotac exceeds this, but I’m also wondering how that can be true since the Series 1 is not a delisted paddle 🤔 Does the core have an impact on grit or “roughness”? My initial reaction is no. Unless there’s an RPM test that came along with PBCoR now?
@@wulymammothAppreciate the research. To my knowledge and what I have been told the starrett test is gone and is now capped at 2200 rpm’s from the way they test. Meaning in real life you may be able to generate more. This was implemented with the new testing protocols along with pbcor. They have made prototypes to test if it would pass. These don’t have to be listed on the website as failed/banned. There was a special flamingo that is sitting in their hq that probably hits 5 mph harder than the retail release. It would never pass, but they made it to test a new core out.
If it had released last year it would’ve been in my top 5 as I have been using it since October. However, many paddles will be coming out in Q1 that are similar. The arms race for power and performance isn’t slowing down in 2025.

@@WingsOfPeaceTorontoI appreciate the comment! The Joola 3s and gearbox were some of the best selling paddles last year both at 280. I did mention it would be “my” top 5. Also, this is an interesting topic that I don’t feel is discussed enough. As a reviewer I have to review all paddles equally. Meaning price shouldn’t be a factor into how good or bad a paddle is. However, a recommendation should factor that in. The argument for me is the grit lasts longer on this in my experience, and if it doesn’t Proton will send a new one right away under their warranty. The Paddletek TKO at 250 and the Joola 3s at 280 are some of the best performing paddles and best selling paddles on the market. The Flamingo fits somewhere right in between. I actually just got one 3 days ago, it's a very good control paddle, still has quite a lot of pop, and makes a pretty loud "pop" sound when you hit it.

Well first off, Proton sending him paddles grants them more exposure on the internet which is good for business. Second, he has a discount code which still offers some sort of incentive to create a quality review.
I plan to use this in my upcoming tournaments, and I plan to put these through a lot of long term testing to see the durability. I also typically test 2 paddles side by side with different weight set ups or one with a slyce cap and one without. Also, a unit went to my co host Graham and another player that plays 5.0 PPA’s(he hits much harder than Graham and I) to help with paddle testing. It is pretty standard to be sent multiples of major paddle releases from most companies. I understand the concern, but I would rather be transparent than hide it. I'm glad you aren't doing paddle reviews because delusional people like you are making it hard to find quality paddles. The series 4 does not hit hard, it's not a power paddle and you may be on drugs. My arm was sore after swinging as hard as I could to get a fraction of the Mods power.
Does seem paddles are getting more expensive from the larger brands. Gearbox, Joola, and Proton all at 280, and Paddletek raising their prices to 250. I don’t know if worth is truly the right word as Joola, Paddletek, and Gearbox did have some of the best selling paddles of 2024.
I'm concerned about the pp core cells. Seems there are certain areas of the xray pic the cell are crumple and not a uniform hexagon cell
If anything is to happen proton will replace within the first year no questions asked.
I love flamingos... just as an animal, they are my favorite animal... completely unrelated to the paddle itself.
Top tier comment
Do you use led tape on your proton flamingo ?
Yes! I cover it briefly in the video. I put 2 grams on each side of the paddle using 0.5 gram per inch tape.
What's the difference between the Proton Project Flamingo and Project Roadrunner paddle?
The Flamingo has a hotter core. The Flamingo also has an edgeguard which helps with a larger sweet spot and protecting the paddle from as much damage. The Roadrunner is lighter due to the edgeless design. The flamingo is carbon fiber face and the roadrunner is Kevlar.
Noon AZ time for release?
From what I have been told.
Is it just me or is the Flamingo not on the website????
It was supposed to be yesterday at noon. No clue what’s going on over there.
Just 1 overgrip over the slippery poor grip is good for me! Weird they went with that type of slippery grip on an expensive paddle.
I don’t believe it’s how the grip is supposed to be. They’ve been having issues with the material arriving correctly. Hoping they fix that quickly.

Where does this sit compared to the chorus fire?
Hits just as hard as the fire from the baseline but not as poppy ok deflections. However, the Fire was recently delisted for a brief moment so I don’t know if everything has been resolved yet. I know there were some recent issues with the Fires core crushing.
How is this compared to the proton series 3?
Hits harder, and should have a lower swing weight on average than the original series 3
I thought it was supposed to be released today?
Something happened on the backend. I was told it will now be tomorrow
@ thanks! Do you know approx what time tomorrow?

More or less spin than a series one?
Tricky one to answer. In my experience the spin potential with the series 1 is higher, but the ease of access to spin is easier with the Flamingo. I am also more confident in the spin staying higher with the series 1.
@JJPickleball do you happen to know if a series one upgrade is anywhere in the pipeline for this year?
@@edwardmiller9062I know they are tinkering. The issue is if they increase power the spin rate goes through the roof making it fail certification. So they need to adjust something to be able to release an upgrade of the series 1.
@@JJPickleball guess I just need to wait for the series one 11mm to come back in stock

@@LukasLwMYou’re telling me. I was told “Monday no matter what” for the release. Looking like the holiday may have messed things up on the backend. Should be tomorrow 🤞🏼
@ hmm Proton didn’t release the paddle… hopefully it wasn’t DOA or delisted lol
@@JJPickleball it’s released today
Has anyone talked to Proton and asked them why they've moved away from their Nanotac surface that had lasting spin?
They haven’t. It’s just in their series 1 line. They just launched (about to) redesigned series 1 paddles and signature paddles for their pros. However, they can’t use this core with the nanotech surface because it surpassing the legal limit for spin by a mile.
@ I had to look this up. USAP has a limit on roughness via the Starrett tester, but not on RPMs. I’m assuming that you’re stating that Nanotac exceeds this, but I’m also wondering how that can be true since the Series 1 is not a delisted paddle 🤔
Does the core have an impact on grit or “roughness”?
@@JJPickleball ah!! Thanks for enlightening me!! 👌
Twenty days into 2025 and you’re asking if it is the paddle of the year. That’s funny.
If it had released last year it would’ve been in my top 5 as I have been using it since October. However, many paddles will be coming out in Q1 that are similar. The arms race for power and performance isn’t slowing down in 2025.
@@JJPickleball your top 5 - with that price tag ... I am surprised for sure. I personally have serious issues with your calculation of value/price ratio :)
So I do feel comfortable giving it that praise. Especially when it has been in my bag for close to 4 months now.

Sick of refreshing my screen… Crazy to think they will let the other releases beat them to the punch. How do you think this compares to the upcoming Ronbus Ripple R1.14?
It’s live now!
@@JJPickleball how do you know it’s more durable if the Paddle just come out?
@@PickleballBatman in the review I mention I have been using this paddle for close to 4 months. Proton also puts their reputation on durability and if it doesn’t meet your standards they often replace.
@ do you have any idea how long is taken to get The Flamingo paddles?
@@PickleballBatman do you mean if you were to order today?
7.5 width or 7.35???
Sorry I missed this. Should be 7.5.
I love my proton series 4. It hits like nothing else I've tried and the build quality is very good compared to other ones I have played with. My only gripe with it is that the edge guard seems to get really scratched easily on the series 4. Hoping for a more durable edge guard the in the future, but super stoked to try the new flamingo
The series 4 doesn’t have an edgeguard as it is an edgeless paddle. I would recommend using blue electrical tape to help protect it from small dings! :)
It's so weird to see people hyping up the Series 4 online but in person they get destroyed in tournaments. The series 4 has negative power
@@RobMarlerI wouldn’t say negative but definitely just above the 60th percentile for power in all court. I enjoyed my time with it, but would choose the series 3/flamingo over it every time for tournament play. A lot of people love the paddle for the low swing weight and it being elongated.
Has anyone played with Series 1 Type B? I can’t find any info on how it plays relative to the Type A.
I actually just got one 3 days ago, it's a very good control paddle, still has quite a lot of pop, and makes a pretty loud "pop" sound when you hit it.
It plays very similar. It just had a much louder sound, more hollow feel, and it hits slightly harder. Hope this helps!
Had you used a Series 4? It reminds me of a Series 4 with a NanoTac face. Little less power but similar pop. I own two Series 1 Type A paddles, and they are very subdued compared to the Type B and Series 4.
@@LilShoeLaFlareI’ve not hit the Roadrunner yet - I’ve only played with the Type A.
@tagman12 Type is one of my all time favorites so I'm sure you'd like Type B if you like Type A
It’s January 20th 2025….with all the Paddles coming out this yr I doubt this will be a top paddle come 12/31/25
We will see! It just has been my main for the last 3 months so I felt it was fitting for now. Lots of paddles in the similar realm will be launching in Q1 of 2025.
Trufoam gearbox ultimate or this ??
Need one for a match ?? Your choice
@@panamaslim595 gearbox ultimate if you love heavier swing weight paddles, Truefoam if you like a bit more control and dwell time plus shape options, and the Flamingo is you want really good power and spin.
@@JJPickleball jj you coped out gotta pick one ?🤣
@@panamaslim595I have been using the flamingo the most so that would have to be my choice. Second would be the truefoam, and third would be the gearbox. All I would feel comfortable with in a tournament, but that’s my order.
I appreciate the review. Seems like an awesome paddle. As far as I can tell the biggest downside is that it's pretty ugly. The colors and design are awful😂
Certainly ugly to some. I am warming up to it. Definitely will turn some people away to not buy.
Still not out….
Apparently they are making sure they have enough inventory. Either later today or tomorrow. They said they will announce on their Instagram before it goes live.
inside looks like any other foamie. Crbn trufoam looks like some new tech that wont break down.
It’s a standard gen 3 paddle. The new Crbn, Franklin, and Selkirk 008 all are working with more foam cores. Some removing the polymer core entirely. It will be interesting to see the durability for all of them. I’m confident the trivial will last.
Paddle of the year is going to be a slugfest this year.
Ronbus Ripple
Joola Pro 4
11six24 Power series
CRBN Trufoam
Proton Project Flamingo
Franklin C45
Apes Pulse X
Whatever Adidas releases in April for Federico Staksrud
And that's just Jan-April releases...
Literally. Going to be a crazy year!
Yes! All of those are GREAT and other than the Ronbus Ripple won't get delisted. I've got a Proton Series 4 and it is a monster paddle that should be delisted from what others have said. Not sure about the new Flamingo yet - But my Series four changed characteristics after just three weeks. Sounds busted actually.
“Made with top tier materials”right after talking about how crappy the grip is
That’s why I often say “Proton claims”. However their face materials have held up in my play testing. This grip however….is not it.
Four or five $200+ free paddles, but no money has exchanged hands? Do you donate them when your reviews are over? Sell them? Send them back? Payment comes in many forms. Now don’t get me wrong, we can’t expect you to buy all the paddles you review, but let’s not pretend you are not better off.
Such as if I had not mentioned this would you have thought to comment this? Appreciate the dialogue and I hope this gives some perspective. I am extremely fortunate to be in the position I am in, and I hope I can provide value into everyone buying decisions whether it’s proton or another brand.

I would call Proton. The series 4 hits hard but shouldn’t be anywhere close to what you are describing.
Lol what? I have used Series 4 for months and it doesn’t hit hard at all compared to Mods and Gearboxes. Great paddle but medium power and pop
@@Orangepie86 Same; I've been using my 4 for a couple of months and it hasn't changed at all. Great paddle
I'm glad you aren't doing paddle reviews because delusional people like you are making it hard to find quality paddles. The series 4 does not hit hard, it's not a power paddle and you may be on drugs. My arm was sore after swinging as hard as I could to get a fraction of the Mods power.
Release time delayed 🤦🏻♂️.
Yup :(
Anyone know until when?
*sigh*
Still no updates on release post delay 🙃
No paddle in the world is worth that price. I’ll pass and let the smart people buy it 🙄
Does seem paddles are getting more expensive from the larger brands. Gearbox, Joola, and Proton all at 280, and Paddletek raising their prices to 250. I don’t know if worth is truly the right word as Joola, Paddletek, and Gearbox did have some of the best selling paddles of 2024. However, there are certainly plenty of options in the sub 200 range that are more than good for those not looking to break the bank when buying a new paddle. I appreciate the comment!
