I don't even plan to study in Finland yet I watch these videos! My school might go on strike again unfortunately! They did 5 years ago but if they do I am going to try and suck it up and do online again anyway. At least, I will have some form or routine back.
Oh man that sucks.. there has been so many disruptions on peoples education during the last two years and im sure that no one is too happy about this strike - although im sure that its for a good reason.
@@RoadtoFinnish Yeah we had a strick a few years ago. It was actually, all over the province of Ontario. The board wouldn't give the teachers more benefits but pretty much the people representing the students filled a class action law suit. So pretty much, "Give us the education we paid for or we are suing the pants off you!." After 5 weeks the teachers went back to work. I just hope no strike happens but my life feels like it has been on hold for a year and a half now so, I need some routine back.

Any advice on how to do furniture shopping before moving or after moving For example if you already moved, to not have a day or less go get a bed from a store to your unfurnished apartment/room.
Only thing I'm aware of is IKEA shipping that limits you to IKEA and requires someone to be at the apartment to open the door for them to put it in/in storage (which might not be possible for some people), so it's not possible to have inside the apartment in advance. And there's moving services, which could work, but wouldn't leave much time for physical shopping.
Hey Gal and thanks for the great question! To be honest, i would personally say that Ikea is really convenient because of the home delivery service. This takes a lot of effort out of the process and im most likely going to use an equivalent service in the future. If this is not something that you want to do, i recommend using some of the second hand furniture shops that we have in different cities. I talk about a few of them in the Helsinki region in this video: ua-cam.com/video/VbsJpazdaAc/v-deo.html
However, do note that if you buy furniture from these second hand stores, you have to organise the delivery yourself. I do not know of any delivery services that would pick the furniture up and deliver them from those stores to your place so the way that ive done this (every time that ive moved during my studies) has been by renting a van for a few hours. The best service for this in the Helsinki region is Pakuovelle.com. Ive used them plenty of times and they have a really good service. The only downside is that their website is in Finnish so if you want to rent a van from them, i recommend that you contact their customer support via email or by calling them. Hey Belen and thanks so much for the great questions! In terms of the apartments, Hoas only offers apartments in the Helsinki metropolitan area and each university city has their own student apartment provider. In terms of Vaasa its VOAS: www.voas.fi/ They are pretty much the exact same thing as Hoas but for the city of Vaasa.
In terms of clothing for the winter - i actually have a video about this topic that im currently working on. We dont yet have any snow here in Helsinki so it might take me until new years to get a winter video out (im going to Lapland for the new years and ill record a winter survival video from there) but the video that im working on right now is about the Autumn season (September - November). I hope you dont mind me asking when are you coming to Finland? Just to give me an idea of whether new years is too late for a winter clothing video.

In terms of budget friendly clothing - you can find all the major international brands here (H&M, Zara, Brothers, Jack&Jones etc...) and all of them naturally also sell clothes suitable for the autumn and winter. These brands are also rather cheap but if you want to go even cheaper, then i would suggest buying second hand. The best store for this is UFF: uff.fi/in-english/ Their website is not fully translated to English but on the page that i linked you can find all the cities that UFF stores are located in. Just search for UFF second hand in Google Maps and you will find the nearest store.

In terms of jobs, i already have a few videos on my channel talking about this topic. Finding work as a student is indeed a struggle (both for internationals as well as locals) especially in the beginning of their studies. Its really important that you take this into account and that your cousin starts working on this as soon as possible as there are many things that one can (and should) do even before you actually need a job. Actually Finland has a chronical lack of work force now, in service sector especially. Of course the language/experience can be an issue but generally finding a job is now easier for students as well.

Hello Oliver, why the heating in HOAS apartments is so bad? My friends in various hoas apartments have been suffering from this problem. Do you have any tips on how to survive cold Finnish winter in this kind of apartments?
Hey Giang and thanks for the question. This is actually an issue that ive never heard of before. In general, Hoas apartments are really high quality and the central heating systems in them work well. Having said this, the only times ive ever felt a bit chilly in our apartment is actually this very time of year (start of winter). This is because the weather outside changes rapidly and the central heating doesnt turn on the radiators before the indoor temperature drops to a certain level. This combined with you being used to warmer weather (during the summer months), it takes a while for the body to get used to the lower ambient temperatures I. think with your friends, the issue might be a combination of what i described above, them not being used to colder climates (just guessing here) and if the buildings are a bit older.
All Hoas buildings follow these heating guidelines which are standard in Finland👇
*The healthy housing guide defines the following temperatures as a guideline:*
Room temperature should be 18 °C - + 26 °C during heating period. (winter)
Room temperature should be 18 °C - + 32 °C outside the heating period. (summer)
These guidelines are for the actual living areas of the apartment; window surfaces, walls, floors and ceilings may be cooler than these reference values.
Regardless of what the case might be, i would recommend that your friends should contact Hoas customer support and let them know that the apartments are chilly and ask for help with it.
@@RoadtoFinnish Thanks for the detailed answer, Oliver! Actually some of my friends are Finnish and they also have problems with it. Maybe because they live in the apartments in old buildings built in 1970s-1980s, that were renovated and the heating is weak there. But also you are probably right about the sudden temperature change and that the radiators haven't adapted yet.
@@giangphan5576 Oh thats very interesting... I these cases id definitely contact Hoas so that they will be aware of this. Again, it might just be that it will take a while for the body to get comfortable but im pretty sure that you are right about the old buildings - they are definitely not as well treated as newer buildings.

Hello Maria and thanks for the question. Unfortunately i do not know the exact answer to this. It is not that common for parents to accompany a student in Finland and i dont think there is a separate process for you moving here for a short period of time. However, if you want to move here on a permanent basis, please visit the website of the Finnish immigration service. On the website, they state the following:
*Can I take my family with me to Finland?*
"Yes. Please remember that a family member moving to Finland must have sufficient means of support in order to be issued with a residence permit. A family member who is moving to Finland together with you can apply for a residence permit at the same time with you or later.

👆 Basically this means that in order for you to get a residence permit to Finland, you need to have enough financial funds to pay for your living expenses OR you will need to have a job in Finland that pays well enough to pay for the same living expenses.

Hey Raj and thanks for the question! Unfortunately this depends on the bank and i would recommend you to contact at least a few banks in Finland to ask a) what documents they require to open an account, and b) how long does the process take.

Hey Andres and thanks for the great question! My understanding is that yes you can apply for Hoas apartments as a vocational student (read more about this here: hoas.fi/en/applicants/who-can-apply/) but i would ask you to confirm this from Hoas directly just to make sure.
@@RoadtoFinnish 2nd degree vocational students can apply for student housing but at least in ~2010 for many places it was actually provided by a foundation related to the school. HOAS/TOAS/POAS/KOAS etc. in my understanding are mostly for 3rd degree students but I may be wrong.
