Welcome to 'The Buffyverse'. You have chosen one of the greatest shows of all time. The way this series develops over the seven series is incredible with brilliant, characters, storylines and meaningful life metaphors. The show has everything life, love lust, friendship, betrayal, grief, joy and brilliant comedy too, all told in fantastic drama, you will love it. S1 of BTVS is a bit cheesy due to low budget etc but you will see it improving leaps and bounds from S2 onwards. It is an amazing show. Most people who start to watch it become totally engrossed in it and cant wait for each episode. Enjoy your journey.
New subscriber. Always a treat to see someone new entering the Buffyverse. As you've enjoyed the first eight episodes, I'm pretty sure you will love what is to come.
I would say the show "can be campy" but wouldn't say "the show is campy". When the show goes camp it does it in a really fun way but when they go serious/emotional they hit those notes hard. I think you might recognize Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) from The Expendables movies. If I'm remembering correctly she plays Jason Statham's love interest in them. Also Eric Balfour (Jesse) had a significant role in the show Six Feet Under on HBO as well as Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Great show if you haven't seen that one.
@@chanceshouseofhorror6053 oh and if you want a high camp version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer you need to watch the movie with Kristie Swanson, Luke Perry and Paul Ruebins (Pee-Wee Herman).
This has been my favourite show since I was a kid and I do a rewatch once a year. So between you, George and the horror bandwagon doing reactions, I am LIVING right now
Definitely made the right choice of reacting to one of the best shows of all time ! Used to watch this with my mom all the time before she passed away❤
I envy you so much for watching Buffy for the fist time. When I was a kid watching it for the first time it blew my mind and presented me with so many concepts and ideas I didn't know TV could do. I still enjoy the show and have rewatched it many times in different times of my life always resonating with different characters and getting something different from it. Watching it as a young boy I could already tell it was something special that revolutionized TV, and watching it now I can understand the themes it covered better and see its impact on the history of television. Its a great show at its core, not only for its time; it still holds so well and it is much more sophisticated than most teen shows nowadays despite its name.
@@chanceshouseofhorror6053 Theres another reactor that does buffy, has a good fan base, has a differrent style than you, but hes done collab reactions that help people find new reactors to this show. New subscriber! I love watching Buffy reactions and this showed up in my feed. You won't regret this! This show was one of the first to subvert expectation in the horror genre. Joss Whedon took trope of the blonde girl that always gets killed and turned it on it's head. Can't wait for you to see how these stories turn out!
Welcome to the Buffyverse. I'm glad you told us you were watching both shows of 254 episodes right out of the gate. Many reaction viewers play shows with this legnth by ear. Episode 1 & 2 originally aired as a two part movie. I feel like that's why, even by the days standards, the _to be continued_ words are oddly placed. If I remember correctly Luke leaned further down until he was out of frame before the show cut to a commercial. Its rare to have someone guess Darla is the vampire in the opening before she reveals herself as one. Glad you liked it. Hope you continue to do so.
Charisma is actually the oldest out of the high school cast, she was like 26 going on 27 here with Sarah being the youngest she was only like 19 going on 20 here
As campy as season 1 is its always fun to rewatch/revisit with new fans, it really brings back that 90's feel , As many have already said season 1 isn't the best this show has to offer , Once you get to season 2 the show will get better and better. Definitely one of the greatest tv shows ever made. Buckle up!
Oh hell yeah.. You're in for a wild ride!! Season 1 was hastily written and filmed because it was signed in as a mid season replacement, so it's not the best the show has to offer. Once you hit season 2, though, it's a blast!
Yes, the actors playing high school students are all older than their characters. Actual 16-year-olds have a lot of restrictions on how much they can work (and a need to have time for school or tutoring) that makes filming schedules for a TV show difficult. Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy) was born in 1977, Nicholas Brendon (Xander) was born in 1971, Alyson Hannigan (Willow) was born in 1974, and Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) was born in 1970. There was actually an original pilot filmed in 1996, but it's difficult to find, as it was remade entirely and expanded to be the first episodes of the show proper, including recasting a couple of characters: most significantly, Willow was played by Riff Regan in the original pilot, and there's a shift in Willow's character in the first few episodes of the show, as the writers adapted the character to suit Alyson Hannigan's performances.
A new reactor? Oh, I am here for this. I get a chuckle everytime you said Xander looks 25, as Nicholas Brendon who plays him would've been 25 when this was filmed (1996). I loved Cordelia straight away. That probably says a lot about me. Oops.
The commentary on future episodes, Joss said they never filmed anymore sequences of the Master in the cave because it looked like a cocktail party of..something really witty I can’t remember..and that the line “I’m an enormous slut!” barely got approved by the censors..I have my German Shepherd lying down just to my left on the couch too..here’s to guys watching Buffy with their dogs! Yeah..Darla..here’s also to “justice for Rita!”
First season is like..exploring a video game universe or a new genre. I think the consensus is (without spoilers) the first season is extremely enjoyable yet the show is getting its feet under it and getting the exposition and lore all set. When Joss takes over at the end of the season, it ramps up every episode until the final episode of season 7. This is my favorite show ever on tv, and I’m over 60. This series starts after the ill-fated movie, which Joss hated. He forbade Marti Noxon from ever watching it! Happy journey..!
The first season takes some time to hit its stride, but teen me was there every week for Sarah Michelle Geller and Alyson Hannigan 🥰 Cordelia will grow on you eventually 😅 You may recognize the librarian (Giles) from Repo: The Genetic Opera.
This might be late but you are gonna want to make sure you watch the OG version and not the remastered version, as the remastered is considered very very bad. They do weird stuff with the lighting and framing to where it affects the atmosphere of the show.
Hes up to ep 8 in full reactions and ep 7 in edited reactions in two weeks so hes crushing it pretty quickly as a youtube member. Be impatient like me! You should join!
This series came along after the success of the movie where Buffy first learned she was a slayer while she lived in LA and where she first started to kill vampires. All that happened before the TV series.
Great reaction Chance, can't wait to relive this journey with you as I've recently started the show for the first time as well and I've just finished season 4. So I'm glad to see your reaction to this show (along with George and the Horror bandwagon) and just enjoy the ride and have fun with it.
As I recall, the first two episodes aired on the same night, so people didn't have to wait a week. I'm happy to hear you like camp, that will get you through some of the rougher parts of the first season, which I love but not all fans rate as highly as I do.
Welcome and thank you for sharing your reactions. BTVS was a late season replacement ( March 1997) show on the struggling WB network. It premiered on a Monday night( the week night becomes an important backstory in Season 2) for an overblown disaster called Savannah. The network was bleeding money, only aired 2 hours of new content 4 nights a week, and had no breakout hits. Rumors were that the network could end in 2-4 years.,( the mascot was a Looney Tunes frog and reached about 60% of the country). The network had so little money to spend that most all producers declined. Joss Whedon took the opportunity to say yes, produce 12 episodes on “ no way to do” budget, and target the 14-29 year old demo to keep the network from having to refund pre paid advertising dollars. There was no long term plan from the network, almost no promotion, and was such a joke with the entertainment media that very few television critics reviews the first episodes. Almost no one predicted what happened next. The ratings were beyond all network expectations. Suddenly there was a show for Young Adults that we did not know we needed but immediately embraced. That Monday night and after, millions of teens and college kids took a trip to Sunnydale and have never left. Suddenly the WB had a major hit show and by early April wanted Buffy back by September. This is only important to understand the context of the First Season and its relationship and different aspects to the following 6 years. Because there seemed little chance for a future, the first 12 episodes have more of a Monster Of The Week. One of the best ways to watch Buffy and get the storytelling is it’s more like an epic novel. BTVS is told in 144 chapters with the first 14 like the prologue that introduces characters and environment. There will be 3 ways to enjoy the show. First , keep the name in mind. Buffy( humor, the name was a stereotype for a vapid Valley girl ), The Vampire( Supernatural) Slayer ( action.) The second is that the core is the journey of a Suburban girl to become a strong, independent, morally superior, and loving woman despite social, administrative, and cultural barriers keeping her from becoming a self reliant individual not under any obligation or expectation of subservience. The last will be the ethical and moral choices made and consequences . The show will examine personal responsibility, what is right, who defines expectations, obsession, narcissistic behavior, lust, selfish ego, power of forgiveness, suicide, the corruption of power, gender, sexuality, the definition of what is a family, and great philosophical principles. Thats just a few of the themes. Good luck on your journey, buckle up, and get prepared for your journey into the Buffyverse.
@@chanceshouseofhorror6053 Be careful. I don’t know all of the comics but Joss Whedon did official canon action comics that started Season 8. One of the last shows to really use practical effects I think? The tone is what got me back in the day - I was a pagan goth type and really into horror/paranormal stuff. The music in this was underground alternative. It wasn’t the obvious - it wasn’t huge at the beginning, it grew :D.
I love this for you my brother LETSSSS GOOOO🫶🏽turn me up I use to watch it when it aired on tv🙂my childhood 🤣🤞🏽Xander: I kind of had a problem with math😂 willow: which part Xander: THE MATH they hilarious 😂😂😂😂😊
omg. subscribed. I love Buffy but maaaan, your voice is amazing. Please just stream yourself reading something mundane like a vacuum manual so I can fall asleep to you.
The first season... was a bit slapdash. That said it was good. And it got continued and evolved into "better" though there are always a few... off episodes with a series. I... want to say the firth episode was a 2 hour show, not uncommon in that era. So we didn't need to wait *yet" but it has been a while so I could be wrong.
By nature, I shy away from the horror genre. But Buffy is my show the way someone into fitness would pick a gym to base their whole personality on or something. I'm only about ten minutes into your reaction so far and I love the way you react, so I'm subscribing. I look forward to the ride you're taking. A non-spoilery bit of advice: the 7th episode of each season is always something pretty special.
FYI: There is a prequel movie you can watch for this series that explains a great deal about Buffy's background. BUT be warned the movie is terrible. The movie makes the TV series seem like Shakespeare. It features a different actress playing Buffy and none of the TV cast or setting is in the movie.
@@przemekkozlowski7835 - I know that the movie came first, so it's a prequel to the TV series, and so yes inversely the series is a sequel to the movie.
Reality check: There are, perhaps you have heard of them, labour laws and anyone making films or TV programmes in the core nation world has to take these laws into account. Another thing makers of TV and movies have to deal with is budgets. That said, I would argue there is an inverse relationship between high budgets and quality art. Generally speaking, the higher the budget the worse the movie and the less intelligent the movie. Adolescents do prefer the orgasmic spectacle of modern day special efficts (basically matte painting) over story. For low budget, high quality films see the Val Lewton and Jacques Tourneur terror films. There are exceptions to this general rule, of course. See David Lean films. Dude, before film Dracula there was Nosferatu. Interestingly, we are getting yet another Nosferatu...
Now, to be fair, you should have watched the Original Film, first. With Kristy Swanson and a cast of Dead guys. Rurger Hauer, Rest in Peace. 🥀 Donald Sutherland. Luke Perry.
NOOOO! Please, please, don't watch it until you have a couple of seasons under your belt. The movie is not canon in the context of the show, it's a bad movie, and it contradicts quite a lot of the series lore, which might be quite confusing. And you don't lose ANY information by not watching the movie.
@@chanceshouseofhorror6053The show only exists because Joss Whedon was so unhappy with the movie, so it's definitely not related to the series. (It'll be a fun watch when you get to it, but it's absolutely not necessary.)
@@sugardares And he was unhappy because he was overruled in so many things. Especially by Sutherland with his demands. My biggest complaint with the show, unlike the film which embraced the ludicrousy of it all. Was that the show took itself seriously as a metaphor for the High School experience. The Vampires dusting was Whedons get out of jail free card, to not have to deal with the potential reality of fighting and killing the Undead. How hard would life have been for Buffy and her Scooby Gang, if for example. Vampires turned into bloody sludge, like Trueblood? Or not dusted or dissolved at all, as in 30 Days of Night? But what did we get? Oh I put out for my Boyfriend and now he treats me like dirt! When it was good, it was Great. Episodes like The Body, Fool for Love, Smashed or Hush! Hush was such a Brilliant idea. Those were episodes that made Buffy worth watching.
I asked Aria(a chat bot) which TV show has generated the most academic papers. The answer was: "The TV show that has generated the most academic papers is **Buffy the Vampire Slayer**. It stands out significantly, with more than **twice as many** papers, essays, and books dedicated to it compared to other shows. This indicates its profound impact on both popular culture and academic discourse, making it a rich subject for analysis in various fields, including gender studies, media studies, and cultural studies." I also asked which TV-show generated most fan fiction: "Several TV shows have generated significant amounts of fan fiction, attracting dedicated fan communities that create their own stories, alternate universes, and character explorations. Here are some of the most notable TV shows known for their extensive fan fiction: ### TV Shows with the Most Fan Fiction 1. **Supernatural** - A long-running series with a passionate fanbase known for its rich character dynamics and lore. 2. **Harry Potter (Film Adaptation)** - While originally based on books, the film adaptation has a vast amount of fan fiction due to its widespread popularity. 3. **Buffy the Vampire Slayer** - This cult classic has inspired numerous stories exploring its characters and themes. 4. **Glee** - The show's diverse cast and musical elements have led to a vibrant fan fiction community. 5. **The Vampire Diaries** - Romantic entanglements and supernatural elements have made this series a popular source for fan-created stories. 6. **Doctor Who** - The show's time-traveling premise allows for endless creative possibilities, leading to extensive fan fiction. 7. **Sherlock** - The modern adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories has a strong following that produces a lot of fan fiction. 8. **Game of Thrones** - The intricate relationships and political intrigue have inspired a large amount of fan-created content." Don't ask me why HP was included here. This should give you a hint about the impact of the show.

Great show. This should be a fun one..
I’ve never met a Buffy but I did know a Duffy
Sarah Michelle Gellar is amazing.
omg. subscribed. I love Buffy but maaaan, your voice is amazing. Please just stream yourself reading something mundane like a vacuum manual so I can fall asleep to you.
lol thank you! 🙏
Great reaction!
you're in for a journey
React to the film: MR. CROCKET (2024), a good surprise this year, sinister and with great practical effects. It's worth checking out.
@@Wash869 oh I will
The first season... was a bit slapdash. That said it was good. And it got continued and evolved into "better" though there are always a few... off episodes with a series.
I... want to say the firth episode was a 2 hour show, not uncommon in that era. So we didn't need to wait *yet" but it has been a while so I could be wrong.
Should have watched the Buffy movie, it's like a history lesson ... But most Buffy fans dislike the movie ( I know, I know it's corny)
Buffy? I'm in. New sub.
Thank you 😃
Welcome! Instant subscribe. ;)
Thank you! 😊
the series is great. i think soon you won't care if this one or that one is 30 years old. 😊
Oh I love it, I just love joking around about the actors ages, they don't actually bother me lol
So, its completely unrelated to your reaction, but I'm loving your voice. Weird to say, I know, but it makes for a really good audio experience.
Aww thank you!
It's a great show!
In "Fear Street" wasn't there a Sunnyvale?
Maybe that's what I'm thinking of!
Do you watch Criminal Minds? There's an episode sort of dedicated to Buffy. There's tons of references throughout the episode to the show.
Oooh that's cool, I haven't seen the show but I'll have to checkout that episode in the future.
No spoilers please
Grew up watching it with my big sisters you should react to charmed
By nature, I shy away from the horror genre. But Buffy is my show the way someone into fitness would pick a gym to base their whole personality on or something. I'm only about ten minutes into your reaction so far and I love the way you react, so I'm subscribing. I look forward to the ride you're taking.
A non-spoilery bit of advice: the 7th episode of each season is always something pretty special.
@@freddiegillespie_05 thank you! This is gonna be a long but fun journey.
FYI: There is a prequel movie you can watch for this series that explains a great deal about Buffy's background. BUT be warned the movie is terrible. The movie makes the TV series seem like Shakespeare. It features a different actress playing Buffy and none of the TV cast or setting is in the movie.
The movie came first so the TV series is a sequel to it. The TV series is much better.
@@przemekkozlowski7835 - I know that the movie came first, so it's a prequel to the TV series, and so yes inversely the series is a sequel to the movie.
❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Yeah I know of Nosferatu. I'm supposed to watch the original for the first time in the near future.
Ahhhhhh 🏹🖤🩸
👍🏿👍🏿
little bit of advise about the comments section... know your losers
Now, to be fair, you should have watched the Original Film, first.
With Kristy Swanson and a cast of Dead guys.
Rurger Hauer, Rest in Peace. 🥀
Donald Sutherland.
Luke Perry.
I do plan to watch it next month. Meant to get to it earlier lol
NOOOO! Please, please, don't watch it until you have a couple of seasons under your belt. The movie is not canon in the context of the show, it's a bad movie, and it contradicts quite a lot of the series lore, which might be quite confusing. And you don't lose ANY information by not watching the movie.
@@migmit I'll make sure to be up to at least season 3 before I attempt the movie then, thank you!
Stop after season 5.
Lol
Fans debate this hotly. Personally, Season Six is my favourite. I would say why, but it would involve spoilers.
I asked Aria(a chat bot) which TV show has generated the most academic papers. The answer was:
"The TV show that has generated the most academic papers is **Buffy the Vampire Slayer**. I also asked which TV-show generated most fan fiction:
