    I think you completely misunderstood the whole point of Bucket List and Life Links. Kiryu Kazuma decided to not fight cancer and just die when the time comes, there was no battle for life in him, as if like he had no reasons to live. Nanba and Date organized the whole thing exactly to remind Kiryu why he has to fight cancer, that he has many reasons to live and many people to return to. One of the biggest ones besides Haruka is Sayama Kaoru. Many fans wanted her to return, she is Kazuma's actual greatest love story from Yakuza (Kiwami) 2 and she made it clear that she is still waiting for Kiryu to return, he is the one she wants to be married with. But besides her there are many others who expressed a desire to see Kiryu back. That's what Bucket List and Life Links were all about - to give Kiryu reasons to keep on living. It wasn't about a funeral or goodbye. I just hope that when Like a Dragon 9 comes, we will see Kazuma and Kaoru married to each other, living in Okinawa and hanging out with Haruka, Haruto and all the other kids. Kiryu deserves a happy ending more than anyone.

    Finished the game last night and the ending really hit me hard. The way in which it handles Kiryu's illness and ties into the themes of confronting death were extremely powerful. The ending as well with its balance of hope and nihilism in how Ichiban is treated left me awestruck. I don't know if I loved the story as a whole as much as LAD but the broad strokes will definitely stick with me.

    I wanted Kiryu to die at the end initially, but I totally saw why they had him live. There's a big image of weakness that comes with going through cancer treatments, especially among older men. Kiryu also talks about not wanting to go through them because he feels that he wouldn't come out of it as himself. I don't want him to return as a fighter, but I'd totally be fine with him retiring to Okinawa.

    Many of the Yakuza plots can be poked full of holes, so that part didn't bother as me much considering the bonds, references and gameplay were so much better than most. The gameplay updates made roaming around just plain fun and not a huge drag, like enemy aggro distance being much shorter, the Smackdown to auto-kill lower level enemies, Drink Links not being locked so you can just save up and do them all at once, etc. Doing every single link, friend convo, reminiscence and ESPECIALLY life link was great and made my ~150 hours in the game go by so fast (platinumed it). It's definitely a better game for long-time fans though, as Kiryu's content seemed far better. More spoilery thoughts:
    My combat strategy was the same as Kelsey's, get everyone a skill of every damage type, though I eventually got everyone to 30 in every job. Samurai's Burning Arrow was the OP skill throughout.
    Dondoko Island was "fine", decent way to get money early but unnecessary in the larger game, especially later on. Sujimon also meant very little, with poor rewards for completing it or completing all leagues. Both are fair to skip but can be fun in spurts.
    Yuki and Koyuki still best girls. FOUR SHINE! This would've been the best game of all time if they let you do the cabaret minigame, even for just the one day.
    I liked the snow substory, but my favorite might be the lemonade one, giving the tiara to the teacher. I was worried it would turn sour but thankfully didn't.
    Yamai one of the best recurring fights and character arcs. Possibly even better than Kuze and that's saying something.
    Shoutout to the CONCEPT of friends forcing you to fill out and complete a bucket list. Everyone would want that, friends making you have fun and letting you see everyone you've ever cared about.
    Kiryu's scenes with Kashiwagi were everything I thought they would be.
    Eiji has the same problem that Masumi Arakawa did in that they went so far down the cartoonish villainy path that I didn't want them to be redeemed and it seemed unrealistic that they'd accept Ichiban's forgiveness. Seemed to be missing some setup scenes. Ebina's reasoning and Kiryu's attempted redemption of him landed far better.
    Kume not making an appearance and only being mentioned in a throwaway line about getting arrested was such a waste and indictment of YLAD's ending.
    Bryce was how old? Like 100? They made him seem almost superhuman and then never touched on it. Great premise for a bad guy but flubbed the landing.
    Akane and Lani seemed forced into the plot and could've easily been written out of it (and they were eventually), since generations of brainwashing could've easily prevented anyone from taking Lani's claim as sage seriously.
    I don't like Saeko and Ichiban as a couple, and never felt like they connected to that degree in YLAD and didn't set it up here. Ichiban's the protag, and Saeko was the only mandatory female party member, and in stereotypical JRPG fashion that means they have to fall in love, right? I'm not mad they didn't end up together.
    The Daidoji had almost no presence and Hanawa dying seemed like a huge waste of his development in Gaiden. It's hard to take them seriously as a faction, and that's not even counting that Kiryu working for them made no sense given the ending of 6. Maybe if the whole evil plot falling through made the current ruling party lose face and the Daidoji taking over would allow for the ending to make sense, allowing Kiryu to return as a reward.
    Getting new party members in Chapter 13 out of 14 is annoying design as there was little to no reason why the last 2 people couldn't join earlier.
    Why did they need to make Kiryu have a waste disposal accident to get cancer? People get cancer all the time, plus Kiryu's a smoker. No need to force in that excuse as foreshadowing of the main plot.
    Overall Chitose, Tomizawa, and ESPECIALLY Seonhee were great additions. Seonhee's hero crush on Kiryu was super cute.
    I liked the Haruka teases and the eventual payoff.
    My rating of the game would be around a 9.5/10. Too much fun, too many good moments, and too many ties to the series to knock it much for the plot issues. 0 is probably still my favorite because that plot worked a lot better chapter to chapter, but this might be 2nd to me.

    I'm excited to hear your opinions on this. Unfortunately this was my least favorite Like a Dragon game (from the numbered entries. I dislike Ishin more than 8.)

    So because of some discussion from the Yakuza subreddit, I found out about Kiryu's cancer while playing Gaiden. And I thought while playing that game that the big emotional ending was gonna be Kiryu's cancer. And then I was playing Infinite Wealth and thought oh yeah they're gonna talk about it now. But even while playing it I assumed it was gonna be from smoking because the subreddit kept talking about how much Kiryu smokes. So I was building this reveal up for a bit.
    I did not expect Kiryu to "get cancer" in THE MOST HEROIC WAY POSSIBLE that it kind of made me laugh. It is a good scene but it was so unexpected but also totally in character in a way. I do really like that it ties in with the Fukashima clean up where I think older people volunteered. And I like that they do say "hey that was radiation exposure but also it could fall under nominal exposure, the cancer could be from just life"
    Oh and Hanawa is a little underbaked in Infinite Wealth after being pretty important in Gaiden, it makes more sense when I heard that Gaiden was written after this game.
    Oh and two of my favourite conversations involve Kiryu and Seonhee.
    1. Kiryu talks about how he dressed up as Santa one time. Seonhee immediately gets on the phone to one of her agents and in the most serious way says something like "new mission. Obtain high priority material. Immediately."
    2. Kiryu sees a photo booth. Says those are fun the party should take a picture. Everyone starts saying they should do it at an arcade or go eat instead. Seonhee sadly says "...so we're not taking a group picture :("

    Enjoyed the episode, but I feel like much of the criticism of the plot holes and villain characters (although fair) is because none of the panel played the majority of the older games. This is just the general vibe of the series, so the questionable motivations for Eiji and Bryce didn't really bother me, because that's just status quo for the Yakuza/LAD series. And the Kiryu bucket list is WAY more impactful if you have the experience with the prior games in the series.

    Great game. Bad story. The worst in the series. Absolutely butchered Kiryu's character as well as the other "legendary" yakuza characters.

      @MrLiljon63 6 місяців тому +1

      How so?

    • @t0mes
      @t0mes 6 місяців тому

      @MrLjljon63 I don't want to spoil too much, but bringing Kiryu back and having him spend his last 6 months of his life with Kasgua's buddies instead of spending more time with his own friends is crazy. Then seeing the legendary fan favourite Yakuza characters essentially living in a hut is again solely to serve the story is, imho, butchering at the highest level.
      Enjoyed the game, platinumed it but as a fan of the original Yakuza series, they should have just not made Kiryu a playable character. He deserved his own game to finish his arc and that was Yakuza 7. Squeezing him in to Kasuga's story (and a sequel of his story no less) is not a worth end to Kiryu's story nor is a worthy fit to the new hero Kasgua's.

      @@t0mesBut that's what you have the Date missions for? Those were extremely moving and I think the best way to go on from Yakuza 6. I'm not sure what else you would have wanted from the old guard. I think them being fucked around by the new guys who try to fill the power vacuum left after the end of 7 was pretty strong. The sequence with the hut was one of the best in the game imo. And the way they come back at the end is awesome

    • @GATESOFKELL
      @GATESOFKELL 6 місяців тому +9

      Aren't all these complaints answered by Kiryu's status as a an agent of the Daidoji, the state of his health, coming to terms with his life/death, and the Date missions? I understand the villains are a little underwhelming but I think they're used satisfyingly to cap off the arcs of Kiryu and Kasuga, and even if the villains aren't super compelling the Yakuza series hardly has the best villains and they aren't bad enough to make the story the worst in the series. I think it's pretty disingenuous to the story and the geopolitical framework to say those other legendary characters are just wasted to serve the story. The dissolution of the yakuza has ramifications and showing how that's effected even the biggest players of the old guard is cool imo.

      Bro forgot about Yakuza 4

  • @manvslife271
    @manvslife271 6 місяців тому +5

    Honestly, for a story that takes it's sweet ass time at the start like all these games do, I didn't really like how rushed and contrived the story felt near the end(prob the most it felt that way since Yakuza 4's clusterfuck of a finale), like there was a missing chapter between 13 and 14 we didn't get to see, and a lot of characters felt "off" in some ways, like at some scenes it felt like they were written by people who only saw memes about their characters instead of actually playing the games.
