I wish these two boys and their parents all the best. They were bright and lively while fused and very hampered in their mobility. Hopefully they can be helped to catch up with lots of therapy.

I just watched this for the first time and while looking at the comments I see that many are distressed that they seem badly damaged by the separation. So I did some research for more recent news and happily, there is more out there. These boys had lived in a hospital nearly their entire lives before being separated so they were not living the happy go lucky life that some seem to think. By the time this surgery happened, they had already had 7 surgery attempts, causing a lot of scar tissue and making this separation even more difficult. Yes, the parents were informed of all the possible outcomes. Bernard is still in a wheelchair as of the beginning of this year but Arthur can stand and is learning to walk. Still in therapy of course. Arthur has been declared ready to attend school but they will delay it because they have not yet had immunizations and having lived in a hospital all of their lives, their immune systems need a boost. They both look happy in the pictures I've seen and are able to go out on family outings, etc.

@@lesleywilliams1210A normal 4 year old would be attempting to engage with the people around them. But they are clearly abnormal. What is sad is that with prenatal care the birth could have been avoided. I know some would say that I am horrible. But I don't see their future being fully functioning persons. 7 attempts at fixing their situation. One was also born with a harelip. How much else is wrong?

From a more recent article about the twins 10 months after this interview, the kids are doing a lot better. Arthur can walk and is ready to attend school but needs to get caught up on his vaccinations first. Bernardo is more delayed and remains in a wheelchair. At least both were smiling and interacting, unlike in this video. A lot of the initial shock was due to the fact that they'd lived all of their lives in a hospital before the separation, so had never seen any of the normal world. Or even each other.

Actually found this distressing to watch. I feel it was more about what the doctors could learn and achieve rather than the outcome for the boys. It’s not a miracle. One child seems in great distress and both seem to have been changed by the operation. It’s so difficult as what was the alternative. I pray for them.

The alternative not to perform the separation would have left the boys in a great deal of struggle in life based on the earlier footage of their movements before separation.
Healing from brain surgery is usually slow & I pray that the boys will recover and be in a better state.

They are learning to walk and communicate. Their quality of life is not decided by you! Astonishing arrogance to think you know better than the parents or surgeons and medical team. You need to re-watch - if indeed you actually watched and listened carefully at all.
Also, if you were genuinely interested, you could look up their progress. I have. They are doing well and can see each other - just imagine a brother or sister joined to you at the head but you cannot actually see them. That was what they faced otherwise, all their lives.

I am Brazilian and I watched many interviews with the parents and not only they were fully aware of the possibility of them dying during surgery , but also about the consequences of it. AND STILL they saw it as the only solution for trem to have any chance of some kind of life . They lived their first 4 years in the hospital , couldn’t ever stand , look at each other and so on .
Not only that but at age four, they barely talked because they spent most time pulling the other one head in constant agony.
Their brain now can develop and reconnect the missing links and no matter what happens , they at least have a chance.

I understand what most see as not successful. The interesting thing is that the brains are not necessarily the way the outcome will be. If you have watched or known someone with a traumatic Brain Injury…..patients routinely have to relearn most everything like physical movement, cognitive development and the great thing about the brain is that the vascularisation is such that the brain can basically be rewired with time. Adjunct vessels can perform and stimulate area of the brain by taking a kind of shortcut.
It will be interesting to see if their cognition and emotional agony will decrease as success is made when it works.

Interesting follow up interview from January 2024 where the doc explains that separating conjoined twins before a year gives them the best chance for the brain to grow and recover to give them normal development long term. In this case the boys were brought to Great Ormond St when they were almost 4 years old but he went ahead with the separation because 7 previous attempts had been made and aborted and their skulls already had surgical dividers and other things inside. His mission was to complete the process to separate and salvage as much as possible. They knew (including the parents) that they would likely have some degree of disability but leaving the separation unfinished would have given them a poorer outcome. Yeah I was surprised how positively they talked like it was a successful surgery when the children look severely disabled and lot more capable before the surgery. I'm afraid they would have had better chance at life without being separated, sure it would be difficult to live conjoined at the head but at least they would have been able to use their brain and together, there are lots of amazing things they could have done. It's sad to see that all the children I have seen so far who have been conjoined at the head and operated seem to have a pretty bad outcome, so not sure I would do this if I was the parent. But what kind of makes me angry I kind of doubt the parents have been made fully avare of the risks, they probably think now their children will be able to live like everyone else which is completely false and it almost feels like the doctors are experimenting on the children and wishing for the best, I mean must be really exciting and educational surgery for a surgeon.

    • @evelynvslife
      @evelynvslife Рік тому +6

@@teijaflink2226I think you can live a much more normal life disabled than you can connected at the head. It’s unknown if they are or will remain disabled in this video anyways. @@kristahathaway9308 the way a child’s body can heal is extremely impressive, and the way the brain can make new pathways to function after trauma is the same. So we really won’t know how lasting this is as they’re still so young and learning how to exist. I don’t like people talking down on the parents and doctors for trying to give these children the best chance at a good quality of life. Some conjoined twins can live full lives without being separated, but I don’t think that would’ve been possible for these boys.

    Especially a conjoined brain..
I feel like it would have been easier if the surgery was done when they had atleast fully developed.
But even still seperating a brain by perfectly removing more than 200 billion neurons without a single mistake is a long shot in todays advancements.
