Are south metros PIOs trained firefighters & EMTs? We don’t have PIO in WI so I think it’s interesting! I’d love to work for south metro someday you guys have a awesome team and some top tier equipment!
Hi guys! Great video!! Two questions. Eric, what sunglasses are those! Sweet glasses! Also, any idea where you guys get the seat covers from. We have 7 Chiefs vehicles and I would love to get them for our leadership. Thanks so much!
Thanks! SMFR purchases the seat covers from Tiger Tough. The sunglasses don't have a brand name, but I bought them at a Shell station off I-70 in Baxter, Kansas! - Eric
@@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO, thanks for the reply Eric! I appreciate the answer to both questions. I love sunglasses and have a ton of them. Always looking for some new ones to add to my collection! Thanks buddy! Stay safe!
One of these days on your vlog, can you talk about your auto aid and mutual aid with departments around SMFR? Can SMFR dispatch tone those departments like West Metro and Aurora for calls or does the dispatcher have to call them and request them to respond? Just curious since you see many responses helping SMFR, and seeing the call in Pulse Point. Thanks in advance
Thanks for your interest and suggestion! SMFR has CAD to CAD capability with West Metro, both fire districts can automatically dispatch automatic aid resources and share MDC data. Currently, SMFR does not share that capability with any of the other neighboring fire districts. Auto and mutual aid requests are phoned in by the dispatch centers, they check the status of the unit(s) needed and dispatch them if they're available.
Hey Eric, Do you have any patches from Wastern Washington? I'm just curious if you have any from that area. I live in a town called "Bonney Lake" in the Seattle-Tacoma area of Western Washington. We have smaller departments in my area that aren't as big as SMFR. The departments in my area can be found Pulsepoint.
I don't think we have any patches from that region, and definitely not from Bonney Lake. Thanks for sharing, we always enjoy learning about other FDs and PulsePoint is a great way to do that.
I watch a lot of your videos I am a first responder as an emt on an ambulance working on getting my fire certifications. I watched a video were you said that support staff go to some stuff if needed. how come if there's calls staking and being over loaded how come support staff can't respond to some of the calls and help the over load
Since PIO's respond to incidents that have high community and media interest, I knew we would end up in the damage area eventually anyway. Since I take vacation time every year to chase storms, it was a good opportunity to provide a rare look into severe weather operations.
I am interested in knowing if all fire departments have designated PIO's. I am not sure our area seems to have one as it usually seems to be a captain or our premier who deliver updates. We have had forest fires this year and this week we just had major flooding with even emergency apparatus getting stuck while trying to drive through flooded areas. I can see the importance of having a PIO for sure as I haven't felt as well informed about the things going on.
The PIO role is part of the incident command structure and always filled at major incidents, sometimes by a fire / police chief or sheriff. Most medium to large size fire departments do have career communications staff with designated PIO's. South Metro is among the few that have a UA-cam channel featuring vlogs hosted by PIO's.
@@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO thank you for the information. I wish we had PIO's like you guys but we might not be big enough to be honest. It was nice to see you receive a patch from our local firefighters a while back, Halifax Regionals Fire and Emergency from Nova Scotia Canada, it has the Bluenose sailing ship in the middle 🤗❤️
Glad everyone is ok in your district. Did you get a new PIO vehicle Eric? Will there be a fleet Friday? Does SMFD plan on adding code 3 drinking to the EVAC course in the future?
Yes, I have a 2020 Ford Expedition now and since a few people have asked for it, I'll make a Fleet Friday for it. Training Bureau didn't mention adding emergent driving to the EVOC course, we only activated the warning lights when a vehicle on the course stopped to reset cones.
@@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Did they take your truck from you or was it an upgrade you wanted? Saw you guys out in the Expedition right after the storm (and later at Station 17) and thought it was a new vehicle for the other PIOs. I liked that truck!
The storm yesterday to me posting this comment spawned multiple tornados in Kansas and Colorado, I am an EMT in Kiowa and Greeley County and we had tornados in Scott City, Sharon Springs, tordado watches all over, Prowers County had a tornado warning even. I was actually in my sisters garage when the storm passed through so I got soaked but not hurt. Sadly there were a few houses destroyed.
It has been an unusually active severe weather season along the Colorado Front Range. Thankfully we don't have to worry about the higher end EF and nighttime tornadoes here, like you regularly face in Kansas. Scary stuff.
@@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO ya, tho luckily those are still rare, mostly just gotta worry about hail damaging crops here in southeast Colorado and western ks
Staff Chiefs, additional Safety Officers, Fire Investigators, Incident Dispatchers, and PIO's don't respond emergent very often, but policy does allow it. Those units will initially respond non-emergent unless upgraded by Incident Commander/Officer, or the incident warrants and justifies their immediate/emergent response or involvement. Most commonly emergency lighting/sirens are used when approaching a closed road or traveling through an incident scene.
Most stressful part of my EMT training was taking command of an MCI scenario. That was a headache without driving while memorizing the call and street signs. 😂
Eric will we see more storm chasing from you? Also would be cool to see a video on what the fire department does during a tornado warning. IE do you have to reposition the vehicles that kind of thing
I'll start including more severe weather related activities in our vlogs. If we have a damaging hail threat, vehicles will be moved inside whenever possible. During the tornado warnings anyone not involved in emergency response will go to an interior room away from windows to shelter.
I'm curious, are PIOs working the scene too? In wondering why they have lights and sirens just to take photographs and video of a scene to relay to media..... I apologize if my question seemed out of line.
SMFR allows support personnel which include Incident Dispatch Team, Fire Investigators and PIO's to respond emergent if the incident warrants or justifies it, or if the incident command wants their expertise on scene in an emergent manner. Usually the extent of activating lights and sirens is just to get on scene when traffic is stopped due to a roadblock, like University Blvd. during the house fire in this video.
Does the PIO help with firefighting or anything? I wonder why they go to calls with code 3. Never seen anything like that here in Holland as a volunteer
At South Metro, support personnel including Incident Dispatchers, Fire Investigators and Public Information Officers have vehicles that are code 3 capable. By policy, those resources respond non-emergent unless their immediate involvement justifies an emergent response, or the incident commander requests an emergent response. Support staff almost always respond non-emergent but routinely activate their lights/sirens when accessing controlled scenes. In this video example, an emergent mode was used to follow an Engine Company through a closed intersection, rather than sit in traffic just outside the scene for an extended time while traffic was diverted.
We will definitely feature a new Brush and highlight the differences from the last generation. Day in the Life of Fire Investigator and Logistics are high on our list.
Most of the police departments South Metro works with use SoundOff Signal and Whelen, which is mostly what SMFR uses, too. We have a few vehicles with Federal Signal.
Thoughts on video ideas. DAY IN THE LIFE OF A EMS CHIEF DAY IN THE LIFE OF A EMS BATTLION DAY IN THE LIFE OF A EMS TRAINING OFFICER @SouthMetroFireRescuePIO
Hello to SouthMetroFireRescue - I was just wondering - Curious if there is a website that I could maybe order - Buy a station 12 T Shirt. Please let me know I am curious. Please keep me updated - posted please. Thanks
When I moved to Littleton from my home state out east, my first experience as I was driving in with my car full of all my possessions was a bad storm with flooding, hail and tornado warnings. Was definitely not something I was prepared for. 😂
PIO is short for Public Information Officer. The job includes being a spokesperson for the organization which includes television, radio and print interviews, social media content creation and management (including UA-cam) and responding to major incidents that occur.
Right!? When I heard that statement I was southeast of the storm and the tornado was rain wrapped. Our Douglas County meteorologist shared that Reed Timmer made the tornado report and it certainly heightened the reality of the situation for me. - Eric
@@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Yes, I t is still out of service. The township is trying to work through all of the beuracratic stuff with insurance, building inspectors.
3 questions, 1 is there plans to replace the older pierce dash engines such as engines 11, and engine 15? Because they are getting old. 2 did Eric get a new PIO car? Because on 5280fire it says he has a 2020 ford expedition. And finally number 3 why is ARM 37 (Advanced Resource Medic) no longer in service? And also is it a different type of unit or is it at a different department?
Q1, Yes E11 & E15 along with E31 are up for replacement and should get engines similar to E23, the order in which apparatus get replaced is based on needs, miles/pump-hours & age which for suppression units is generally around 10years (speciality units 20years). Q2, yes he got a 2020 Ford Expedition, his old F150 went to welfare team. Q3, ARM37 was moved to headquarters and responds from there, you won’t see it on PulsePoint.
@autofleet4429 Is dialed in! There are 4 new Engines in the next replacement order but exactly where they will be assigned hasn't been determined. Aside from vehicle age, condition and mileage are also factors in replacement. Operationally, E22 is the only front line Engine with a 500 gallon water tank, so it's possible they might get a newer apparatus with more water. Yes, Eric was assigned to a 2020 Ford Expedition. ARM37 is out of service and the Advanced Resource Medic program has been disbanded. ARM37 is now "Public Health 10" based at Headquarters with a Paramedic and Community Health Clinician. We'll share more information about that change soon.

Do SM PIO’s often run code 3 for calls? Or is it rare? Is this something that SMFR allows y’all to do?
Staff Chiefs, additional Safety Officers, Fire Investigators, Incident Dispatchers, and PIO's don't respond emergent very often, but policy does allow it. Those units will initially respond non-emergent unless upgraded by Incident Commander/Officer, or the incident warrants and justifies their immediate/emergent response or involvement. We're scheduling that with Station 44 right now, so it'll probably be up in a couple weeks.
Dang I enjoyed seeing it every month you guys do such a great job with it...
Can you ask your police department and Can I ask you what siren does your rigs use? Prayers are out to the families hit by this.
looks like the chiefs use soundoff signal and the pio, ambulances and fire trucks use whelen with a federal signal q siren
looks like his new vehicle now runs soundoff signal as well
Most of the police departments South Metro works with use SoundOff Signal and Whelen, which is mostly what SMFR uses, too. We have a few vehicles with Federal Signal.
@@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO What series siren do you guys all use? Nergy400?
Thoughts on video ideas.

New PIO truck? What is it?
It's a 2020 Ford Expedition.
how many tornados does Colorado get a year ?
Colorado averages 40 tornadoes per year. Most occur east of the Denver Metro area and Interstate 25 in less populated areas.
I would love to go storm chasing sometime
Eric did you get a new pio vehicle
Is look like
He did a 2020 ford expedition
Yes, I have a 2020 Ford Expedition now.
Damn surprised the fire station was not major damage
When I moved to Littleton from my home state out east, my first experience as I was driving in with my car full of all my possessions was a bad storm with flooding, hail and tornado warnings. Was definitely not something I was prepared for. 😂
What an unpleasant surprise! May, June and July can get a little sporty in the afternoon.
what does PIO mean like what do they do ?
PIO is short for Public Information Officer. The job includes being a spokesperson for the organization which includes television, radio and print interviews, social media content creation and management (including UA-cam) and responding to major incidents that occur.
Eric was a storm chaser? That's pretty cool
is
@@Autofleet4429 I'm guessing he doesn't show his storm chases on UA-cam?
@@tbuff91 No, he occasionally posts pictures on his Instagram.
"A confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado" is not something I thought I would hear while out storm chasing that day.
Right!? When I heard that statement I was southeast of the storm and the tornado was rain wrapped. Our Douglas County meteorologist shared that Reed Timmer made the tornado report and it certainly heightened the reality of the situation for me. - Eric
Can you do a video on your helicopters for like forest fires and they come in can you do a video on it?
A EF-2 hit the firehouse were I was a firefighter in Goshen, Ohio.
Yikes! Did the damage force the station to be out of service?
@@Autofleet4429 ok thank you so much
@@Autofleet4429how do you know all this?
@@SouthMetroFireRescuePIOok thank you! And when will we get to see pictures of tender 41? Edit: Also what will happen to the old engine 21?
Why on earth did the neighbours not chain up the golf cart and pull it away from the structure?
