  • In this video I discuss A couple of lighting states and give some brief explanations of some basic lighting terms. Its aimed at GCSE drama students.
I try and lay out my comments in a way that reflects the mark scheme. I say what the thing is Im doing or using ( for example a warm orange side light (Fresnel) I then explain my intended effect.
In the written exam its important to link this to the audience and if possible the larger ideas or themes of the play or the original social context. Basic technical language should be used and I try and give examples of this.
Im specifically looking at the moment where Adam returns to the group and how the transition into that moment could be lit. The transitions provide a really good chance to be creative with lighting sound and projection but could easily be overlooked in the exam.
Look over the scene and note down other moments in the play where this kind of transition idea could be used or how contrasting lighting effects can really enhance the messages of the play.
When talking about lighting mention the colour ( be descriptive, your not expected to have memorized specific filter codes!) . Talk about the direction the light is coming from I used side and overhead lights to help create the shadows that give a sense of menace.
When talking about sound effects again be descriptive , dont just say music : try and describe the feel of the music. I used distortion and echoes sounds int the transition but also realistic bird song.
Its a good idea to clearly think of several options for how to describe the lights and sound you could use (after all there aren't many locations in the play: only 3, you can guarantee your going to get some of the lighting states you have already designed and thought about. if you already know how to describe and explain it it will make the exam less stressful for you)
Keep an eye out for more videos in this series.
