Hi Shawn. I have a Rebel T3, or 1100 D as its known over here in the UK. Having been stored away for about 6 months I went to switch it on a few days ago but it wouldn't power up. I tried 2 fully charged batteries and also removed and reinserted the SD Card without success. Any ideas on how to solve the problem would be gratefully received. Also, if the camera proves to be uneconomical to repaired due to its age, would you recommend the 2000 D or Rebel T7 as you know it, as a good entry level replacement.
@@bovinestool1681 Sorry, I have no idea what the problem could be. It seems like it could be a battery to camera connection issue, but I don't really know. As far as the 2000D, on the Photography side of things, it's a great choice. If you are doing video too, then it depends. If 1080p is good and you don't really care about being able to plug in an external mic, and you don't care about continuous autofocus in video, then it would also be good. If any of those things matter to you for video, you might want to check out the "i" version of these cameras (no 4k) or a Canon SL2 (no 4k) or the SL3 (cropped 4k), or the Canon m50 (mirrorless instead of DSLR, but mostly the same, cropped 4k). Hope that helps...
I checked out the other videos on how to use the rebel canon. Good thing I did because of your videos, I learned how to use the spot meter in both manual and auto focus. Which by the way, was something that a friend of mine and I were discussing. He asked me last week, when we were out shooting pictures. "Does your camera square focus box in the view finder turn green when it lock focus on the subject?" He was showing me how his camera can spot meter and lock focus on the subject. And I had no idea how to do that. I said to my friend, "No, my camera doesn't have that feature." And he said no more about it. But thanks to your videos, I found out that my camera does spot meter and focus lock on my subjects. So keep up the good work. View the pictures that I took and posted on UA-cam: OSP Band Downtown Winston-Salem, NC and Jamming OSP Band (Old School Players). This was the first time in awhile that I actually went out and took pictures. I know a little more now, so my next shoot will be better. Again, thanks for your teaching!
Every single camera tutorial should be set up like this. Not only do you explain what each function does and how to use it on that particular camera, but you show the consequences and results of using those functions, with different pictures to prove your point. BRAVO. Also, I love all of your fun toys and gadgets you have hanging around as your subjects. That makes it even better. And your son is adorable!
@@ThisGuy Can't wait :) just subbed to the channel. I just bought this camera today also... got the 50mm lense with it. $200 but mind you I am in Canada....

Thanks so much man! I didn’t know anything about canon cameras, as it was really knew to me, but after watching your video I can use it like a pro! Much appreciated!
Glad I could help! When you're ready, maybe check out some of the other Canon videos I made that go into more detail on certain topics like White Balance and Exposure Compensation. Thanks for watching!
This is really great! Thank you so much! Your free lessons are going to a great cause. I'm going to take some geat pictures of nature, local wildlife, and perhaps even people portraits. I really really appreciate these explanations and clear examples and comparison in the video of the different settings. Everything was engaging and even entertaining! God bless you!! ^_^

I'm not sure if there's a direct way to do it, but I always put everything on my computer, and then if I need anything on my phone I upload it to like google drive (from my computer) and then download it from the google drive app on my phone...
Can you please explain how the digital zoom works? When I zoom digitally I can see on my screen the object from far away and I can shoot whatever I want. However, the picture that I get is the same as I haven't zoomed at all.
That "zoom" is just a focus assist feature. For more "zoom" you'll need a lens with longer reach. At 2:50 of my Live View mode video it explains what you are asking --> ua-cam.com/video/vUo7S7nNU1k/v-deo.html
So uh did you use the Canon T3 for the samples in this video? A friend of mine is selling one in really great condition for 80 dollars and I'm seriously considering it.
The lens will make a HUGE difference for sports (to be able to zoom in further and gather more light). If you are on a budget, you can get away with the 50mm f1.8 for basketball (if you can get courtside - as it doesn't zoom) and the 55-250mm for football. BUT, the 70-200mm f2.8 (or even f4 if you need to) is the typical go to...it's expensive though! As for settings, a fast shutter speed is needed like 1/400 or faster. This will mean you will need to crank your ISO higher than you want when inside (outside should be fine), and you will need to keep your Aperture down low (that's why the lenses with a lower aperture are more expensive - they can let in more light)
Thanks for a great instructional video, Shawn. I've been struggling with my 1100D since getting it a few months back, but now I have what I wanted - a simple guide to the controls. Wish me luck!
Great to hear! One "practice concept" that I always give to my students is to "goldilocks it" on purpose when you're learning. Which means, for example, have the shutter speed too fast on purpose, take a picture, then too slow, take another picture, then try to get it "just right" - and the best way to practice Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO individually is probably by using Av for Aperture (ISO Auto), Tv for Shutter Speed (ISO Auto) and P for ISO. Good Luck, and have fun!
I have been watching a lot of beginner photography videos and am here to say you are the best, your explanation is simple and so clear. Thank you so much.
This is seriously such a great tutorial! Love the easy-to-digest format - the visual examples with the explanations that were informative but not tmi. Thanks for this video!! Super helpful!
Love your video. What lens would you recommend for my T3 for shooting group photos like birthdays, family events etc. The angle is very narrow on my lens kit
I love taking photos with phones and hate doing it with cameras, I think it's because of the ease of use. The phone has a large display screen and lots of build in filters and setting. While a camera is capable of more, it just seems like Its just less fun as a hobbie to use the camera lol Hopefully some day I'll overcome this gap keeping me from really enjoying it to its full potential, for now I'll continue studying. Thank you for the awesome walk through and demonstrations!
Depends what you want for the photos + the brightness outside, but these settings should be a good starting point... ISO 100 Shutter Speed 1/400+ (faster, if action is too fast for 1/400) Aperture f8+ (higher if image is too bright. lower if image is too dark) White Balance Daylight (if sunny)/Cloudy (if cloudy)/Auto (if sky changing lots)

Depends what you want for the photos + the brightness outside, but these settings should be a good starting point...

Shutter Speed 1/400+ (faster, if action is too fast for 1/400)
Aperture f8+ (higher if image is too bright. lower if image is too dark)
White Balance Daylight (if sunny)/Cloudy (if cloudy)/Auto (if sky changing lots)
