  • can a buffoon with zero artistic skill successfully create a masterpiece, a la bob ross, in VR?
    this painting took just over an hour, start to finish. i skipped a couple of things at the end (a barn and a fence) because i was too scared. you can obviously see me struggle with basic things like circles and blending and colors, but i had so much fun, and i think that this is certainly one of the greatest VR experiences out there at the moment, even for non-artists like me.
    also shoutout to vermillion's excellent spectator cams.
    i followed season 19 episode 12 "evening's peace", found here: • Bob Ross - Evening's P...

      While I can't say if he would like using the program himself I'm sure he would be over joyed that painting is now more accessible to people. A decent canvas costs more then the whole app.

    Speaking as an artist... for a self-proclaimed "buffoon with zero artistic skill" you've made a gorgeous painting, Bob Ross tutorial or no. There's a really nice sense of depth, balance of values that are hard to get right just by following a tutorial. Most importantly, your painting actually conveys a sense of a scene and makes me want to be there, and there are no major mistakes to detract from that mood. I think you have an untapped talent you should explore, even if it's "just" in this game to start with.

    I don't remember if i watched it before or after buying my Quest 2. But this atmosphere is what make those apps magical! I know that i'm limited by my small living room space, i can control it. But at same time, i totally forget that i'm inside a virtual world. And i guess i'm the only one who uses the UA-cam to listen to playlists while drawing! lol. In my opinion, Vermillion is more complicated to work with, as it won't forget mistakes so easily as Painting VR, for example, even though this app also won't let you do too many mistakes.
    If you watching never tested it out, you will never be able to truly enjoy it by watching a UA-cam video, belive me! This is not what you might be imagining. You got to test it by yourself. If you're the person that always got yourself thinking about anything and tripping all the time, Quest will make you literally teleport to other worlds.

    I just bought Vermillion and jumped right in. While I did manage to "draw" using a very very thin hard tip brush (been drawing since I was a kid), I destroyed it as soon as I did any painting since I suck at color. Then again, I didn't know you could have a video running in the background, or even overlay pictures as reference!
    As soon as finals are over, I'll get going with that. Thanks for showing that it is completely possible!

    • @therivermelody
      @therivermelody  2 роки тому +1

      that's thanks to vermillion's spectator cams! the app streams a completely different view than what you're seeing to your desktop, which is what you can record. the default i think was the slow pan from side-to-side, but there's also first person (8:03, 9:36), and a close up view of the brush. the first-person views are the closest to what i was actually seeing while i was painting, though i assume it's stabilized a bit, since VR footage can be really unpleasant to watch without stabilization.

    can you pleas provide what options about colour thickness and canvas blending you have?... i tried for 2 hours making the water/river you made in the exact same way. on a dark background "same colour as you"... but instead of it blending into the canvas... when i drag a clean brush through it, it just spreads the gray mixed colour all over the place and never stops.. same when i tried to make the gray cloud you started with the moon in the middle.... i cant get it to be round enough and blend with the black... it just continues with a sharp graying colour to the end on the canvases... so im guessing maybe my options is wrong ?...

    • @therivermelody
      @therivermelody  3 роки тому +2

      hmm, i'm pretty sure i'm using all default settings! though, this was recorded on july 28th and there have been multiple updates since then that changed paint thickness/brush textures/etc. i spent about 10-15 minutes just blending out the sky around the moon and whatnot. it's hard to tell in the video, but i was cleaning the brush CONSTANTLY while i was blending that part out. that kept me from blending out the lighter color too far, and kept the darker color from overtaking the lighter color. when i did the ground part at 6:10, i used a bit of white on my brush, but i cleaned it off before i went very far down so i could just blend out the lower edge. like before, i cleaned my brush off very frequently and worked from the lighter area to the darker area. if that's giving you too much trouble, you could always try doing it on a different layer! i think vermillion supports four or five layers. i don't do art so i don't think i can give a better explanation than this. 😂 if you need more help, you could ask on the vermillion discord! there are some crazy good artists over there and they're super nice and willing to help!
