I visited Estonia last year. I want to add, among countless other things, that it has some of the best preserved old towns in europe, one of the best education systems in the world (top in Europe now), incredibly kind people, and is actually really safe. I'm honestly considering the (crazy) idea of moving there once I master their intense but fun language.
A fun fact for you, while mastering our crazy fun language would be most welcome, you can actually manage quite well with speaking just English (could be a problem maybe only if you decide to move to a very small place) :)
Coming from a European, ex-socialist country as well, gotta say a lot of us here are jealous of the baltic republics for getting their countries in shape so quickly. Wish eastern Europe would take after your example.
It's great to see the progression of these videos guys! Feels like you're implementing a lot of the feedback that you've seen in the comments while retaining the same 'feel'. Really nicely done! Good pace, style, and information as always. I pay close attention to the way these videos are edited and styled and its clear that yall are putting in WORK! Hats off to the Beme team as always. Excited for the next one!
in most European countries tax returns are filled online, just like in Estonia, and it doesn't take much longer if you are a classic taxpayer (without countless non-EU assets). as an European, it seems astonishing to me that the average American take 13 hours to fill its tax returns, why is it so complicated?
Money, company's like Turbotax and H&R Block help customers file their taxes for a fee, so it's in their interest for the US tax filing system to stay complicated, so they have lobbied the government to prevent our multiple attempts to simplify things
It's always about money. Both our liberal and conservative politicians are largely being funded by huge corporations and companies, so the decisions made in government are almost never what is good / helpful for the American people but instead they help companies and therfore politicians make more money.
Wow, i'm impressed. i'm Estonian and that mean's alot to me when this big of youtube channel that hosts Casey Neistat makes a video about Estonia. That society is not impressive to me anymore, because i live in it everyday. But when i take it from other origins aspects it is impressive.
As a Estonian I thank you for bringing X road to light. Its basically the Linux type of thinking, they basically gave out an "API" to link your own services to government archives. So you can design services and plug them into the huge database chain. Also the 1.3m point is correct, we have such a small "target" that corruption on large scale is well not that juicy of a target and on the other side, every bigger bit missing will be seen so harder to mess with stuff. Thankfully we aren't important enough. Also the main principle how this came to be is also correct, the country had no real economic base or good resources to sell forward so going digital was worth a shot. We aren't doing the best currently but we have some straws to grab but it started a long time ago with projects like "Tigers leap" that basically tried to first digitize schools by bringing in computers and similar programs from a while ago.
I was in Estonia last year and I was impressed by this e-system and BELIEF in this system. Like you mentioned, it's a cultural thing. This will not work everywhere. This is their religion, they believe in this e-system and it works. Not to mention free public transportation in Tallinn, e citizenship, free education system and so on. Impressed WP Estonia
Your right, it seems to be absolutely cultural - instead of completely mistrusting the government, the people here are willing to believe that the government puts the data into good use that benefits us all. I guess we haven't had a reason to doubt that so far and by now the benefits are very evident, couldn't imagine (read: wouldn't want to be) living in a society we had before the e-solutions!
It's already information the government would have, it just gets put in one place so you're not always having to run around to different places and departments to get the copies for yourself.
I live in Latvia right next to Estonia. We also have the ID cards and e-signature, but it is not yet widely used. Can't vote electronically yet tho, but there are thoughts to implement that in next few years.
I am a subscriber of Casey and i knew of this chanel before it launched but i discovered the videos early today and i got to say that, for the few videos i watched, this is a total succes ! Love it, stay growing it will blow
You've really hit the mark with this video. Bringing to light information on a subject that is not of common knowledge, whilst having a direct link to our daily lives. Keep up the good work!
So glad you added that clip at the end. I watched that movie dozens of times as a kid and couldn't get it out of my head when you were talking about Estonia.
Definitely my favorite "Here's The Thing" to date -- Would love to see an entire piece about how voting will work in the future..can't imagine we can keep going with paper ballots. -C
I'm living in Estonia this summer for this exact reason. I'm part of a program called Mindvalley U (basically a fusion between a study abroad university program and a personal growth intensive), and this year's location is Estonia because where better to learn than one of the most technologically advanced nations out there?
So, the description I used above was a good description. It's all about personal growth and education. As for what it's like from a student's perspective, I would say there's a huge difference between traveling and living in a country. You can see a dozen countries, but you'll learn more living in one country for a month than you will in all of those countries. Also, it's very cost efficient. You get a whole fantastic month of brilliant content, and living in one place for a month is very cost effective. Are you interested in attending? How can I help you?
Alex Westerlund Actually with my current financial situation I can't afford it. May be some day :) I just need to migrate from India looking for options and I am socially akward :D
Well, I say you at least apply for the program. Once you're accepted, you're in for life :) And in terms of your financial situation, I feel you. I spent literally all I had to go to last year's program, and even despite that it was the best decision I've ever made. And it wasn't just about the learning, it was the community. I have genuine friends in a dozen countries now, something I never thought possible. Whatever you decide, at least apply. Get your name on the list. It's much easier to save up money when you have a specific mission for it.
These have finally gotten to the point of where I'm excited to watch Lou, they're interesting, entertaining, and feel like actual news. Keep it up guys.
Hi Beme team, thanks for the story I am an Estonian as well. I have lived in other countries only after that you remember to appreciate the e-government system we have. We built this on a blockchain system before blockchain was a term :) Currently, we are selling our system to other countries and building them with them and Middle-East is most interested. There is so much more benefits about this unfortunately you don't have the time to cover all so I urge people research themselves because scaling and integrating would bring up so many more opportunities for everybody. Also e-residency is a whole other topic that would have so many benefits to citizens outside of Europe. So thanks Beme! As a small country we are often overlooked so any attention is awesome :)
Nice that you give some attention to Estonia. Estonia rocks! 🇪🇪 Estonia is my best home-away-from home. My wife’s Estonian and 2 sons then half-Estonians. Just wanted to say that...😀
I’ve only been to port city of tallin when I was visiting Finland but from the little glimpse of Estonia I call confidently say that this is a country I would 100% want to visit extensively
Estonia is successful not because of the Soviets but despite of them. Let's face it, Estonia didn't exactly have the greatest starting point when gaining independence. The country and economic state was in ruins and Estonians were decades behind any technological advancements. Now to come from that and become one of the most advanced digital societies in the world? It is quite impressive. I don't want to speculate what would've been had Estonia remained independent.Probably it would be one of the most developed and richest countries on earth.
GDPR be sure many Russians would like the Soviets didn't invade us as well. There is a theory that it was the Western project to communize Russia, but something goes wrong..
Excellent video. Lou's reporting and the editing/DIY feel makes this compelling and breaks down a complicated concept into digestible information. Also love the transparency with Lou's responses to comments. Keep it up Beme
Bro I'm from India and the Aadhaar card is hacked in some small way every other month, the biometric scans fail a lot so poor people in the villages with no electricity who can't access internet are in a bad state. People have died because they didn't have Aadhaar and it's still "voluntary" and *not compulsory* as of right now. They've had us connecting it to our bank accounts, mobile phones, insurances, investments, stock exchanges, etc and can ruin your life with the flick of a switch.
Isn't that a problem of implementing something that requires people to not be living in a developing country and more a developed country. It seems like it was implemented too early without the infrastructure around it so then it'll fail. But as with everything tech based yes it's hackable but using blockchain is a brilliant way to decrease the probability of such.
We have had that system for many years sweetie. Apart from that one incident we haven't had any problems with it. Crime aint as high in cyber department either. I haven't heard of anything like that at all actually. So does that mean that we have really stupid people that can't handle hacking? Nope. Skype developing and maintaining e-country status etc proved otherwise. Estonians are smart! Smart people work for government cause it pays better. And since there's like 1.3 million of us then... well do the math yourself. It's all logical. Idk 😖
This is the content i expected from you guys, less cheap hyped up buzzfeed material but a good balance between information and personality. To me what set you apart from all the others from the beginning is a more human approach to news. Good job!
This is good content. First video I watched from you. Quick, jokes, accurate and informative. Admitting the flaws and backsides to your opinion is essential and honestly, you did a real good job with this one.
Where do you get this information from ? I have not heard any of this and im reading a lot of political newspapers, I would think I had heard something about it since im using a e-cigarette myself everyday. Also I dont see estonian politicians any time banning such a thing to be honest.
I am Estonian and even I didn't know some information about my own country. I learned something new from this video and I really liked it, thanks for making it!
I got to Estonia as a coincidence and didnt expect anything from in. spent a month there and fell completley in love with it! Even old ladies selling hand made socks in a stall had a credit card terminal - everything was so easy and inviting
I think about this all the time... this concept isn't new in my mind anyway. I'm at doctor offices very regularly and am always thinking how stupid and wasteful it is to fill out paperwork each and every single freaking time. Are we just trying to support the logging industry?
While a national ID card as some benefits - BUT having a national database for citizens helps the government surveil & monitor its citizens. NO thank you!
Like I commented elsewhere: "As an Estonian, it always make me wonder, why people are so reluctant for the government to have the information. What makes you all so suspicious of your governments, thinking they would rather misuse the information and people's trust, than use the information in a way that can benefit everyone? Not saying the government here is perfect (which is?) but I guess one of the reasons behind why the digital nation is a success here, is that the people don't have that large of a distrust towards the people in charge of the information." If you can't trust your government (e.g you have proven examples that you they've misused your personal information) with that kind of data, then why even want to live in such a country? That's of course a completely another topic :)
As Egle said what information is that important? They don't actually see where I am or what I am doing and all the other information as dates of birth, tax payment etc is already on account for most countries, only difference that with X road those who have access can have that information with a click of a button and not searching through archives or different databases. But again even then technically some part of the government has that information of you X road or not.
Egle5 ever government sooner or later becomes corrupt.Secondly trusting a government in any history is a bad idea and lastly most people will never trust their government, just find a history book.
I thought that most of us live in democratic societies now where people can elect who governs above them. So, if the people governing over you are that bad, haven't you, the people yourself, elected them? Also the way governements govern has changed quite a lot compared what was used to be (e.g fixed fairly short terms for which people are elected, partly to avoid just that, governements becoming corrupt). So no, I don't think it's always a bad idea to trust (but still check, of course) the government. But guess we will just have to agree to disagree on that.
Does anybody think that it might be a bit overkill to have all the grades and financial records about the people ? I feel like it could be against the efficiency of the social ladder. If anybody can judge you from your financial records and grades from school.. Nope ?
Actually in paper system anyone can check you data and you dont even know it, in digital you can check who did it and ask whyor even watcher can lose job for that. People dont get that data in paper are more insecure and signature can be lot easly copy in paper than in ID card.
When this started, Casey said they were going to test things out and see what works... Here's the thing.. Love the direction this is going and you are right up next to defranco on my watchlist!
It's just simplifying the system! The government already has all this info. This process just streamlines it so you're not constantly having to go to different departments or places to gather it for yourself.
Its great so see country go so tech savvy. Hope everyone tries to make them an idol. But sure it is hard to do this in a bigger country. But still its pretty impressive and hopefully Estonia can retain its record of one of the best performing European nations. Goodluck and nice informative video mate
Like the "Okay, that's today's episode" addition to "I'm going to go live my life"...totally feels like a complete closure now. Super interesting piece, never knew this about Estonia. Look-in forward to Jacks News videos on crypto. Keep living awesome guys, great work.
Holy crap 2% gdp and save lives! Things I care about nice work guys. Awe that’s cute jack a show also. To bad his butt ins makes me not want to watch it.
To attribute Estonian ingenuity to the Soviets (even "in a weird way") does a disservice Estonia. It is the Kremlin's belief that Estonia is Russian. They'd annex it today if they wouldn't so grievously be breaking international norms. I would really like to see the attribution of these Estonian ingenuities attributed to what they should be attributed to: Economic Freedom that is unrivaled by what we consider European economic powerhouse countries.
Yes. Essentially Estonia wanted to be everything that Russia wouldn't let them be. They wanted to not only match the West and what they saw there, but also improve it. It's exactly what Estonia has done, and continues to do. They are now known as "the Silicon Valley" of Europe. They are so creative and always looking for more ways to improve life. It's such a fresh breath of air.
This was very good :) it's the first video from Beme News that really felt to me like the ideas and writing style are hitting an appropriate niche to keep me hooked. Well done!
except for anarchysts who only want to prove a point and just for fun they dont need money, its not like hackers are bad people maybe they challenge people to come up with better security for when we fight the aliens...... :v
Historical stuff, Russia benefits from a "weak Europe". More heads of states at each other the more possibility to get beneficial deals for Russia itself. Practically the more frozen conflicts the weaker Europe is and better to achieve their own goals. Another aspect is cultural "boogie man" type, Russia as other countries build up "enemies" to strengthen their own public ...image among themselves, be it Putin boosting his own ego or simply showing "the evils of Europe" on tv. This isn't just what Russia is doing, other countries do it just the same. Also realistically historical reasons during WW2. Near history there have been unofficial trade wars like banning certain cargo (even before the Ukrainian conflict) so there is a lot of rubbing under each others throats that builds up tension. Possibly other reasons but...stuff, historical stuff has happened. US so far hasn't been with that bad of a past torwards Estonia, Russia or their predecessor USSR used its citizens lives as well...badly, among those Estonians. Estonia took a very sharp turn towards the West and US and as that is kind of an idological conflict with Russia still (cold war and all that) it automatically makes Estonia seem like "the other guys".
The talk is about who is friendly towards Estonia. USA is Estonia's close ally. Meanwhile Russia has a history with terrorising Estonia (did you even watch the whole video?) and its other neighbours.
Estonia and Russia has been at war with each other, Russia took over Estonia, and Estonia finally declared independence in the early 1990s. So yeah, Russia isn’t a very nice neighbor.
Ce Jota Estonia is a memebet of NATO and US is it's ally. And why are they part of NATO? Because of Russia. Russia constantly invades European air space and for countries like Estonia who don't have their own air force that is a real problem. And not to mention cyber attacks, interference in elections and constant harassing in every way why the hell would Estonia consider Russia a friendly neighbour?
Estonishing
I see what you did there :D

Joseph Fissore What do you think about Estonia language ? Is it beautiful or so ?

100& agree

Bernie/Yang
Bernie’s ideas and the Milton Friedman ideas Estonia implemented are in direct contrast.

Lucas Fernandez No, it isn't a tracking system for pepole. To Estonians id card is a normal thing.

I'm from UK, what makes you live in Estonia? Cheaper living?
A nice 1 bedroom apartment in the center of Tallinn costs about 500€ a month. Food will cost you max 10€ a day if you eat very healthy.
Kiwi Estonia isn’t cheaper than the UK at all.

This is good content. First video I watched from you. Quick, jokes, accurate and informative. Admitting the flaws and backsides to your opinion is essential and honestly, you did a real good job with this one.
Who knew the future is happening in Estonia :)
Arts Sake Productions it's not, they banned vaping! The future of drug use
Arts Sake Productions knew with a k
We did not ban vaping, wtf?
Jürgen Koks yeah vape juice e with nicotine in it is or is about to be banned
Where do you get this information from ? I have not heard any of this and im reading a lot of political newspapers, I would think I had heard something about it since im using a e-cigarette myself everyday. Also I dont see estonian politicians any time banning such a thing to be honest.
Love the content, pace and style. Excited for the direction this is headed - nice work guys!
Syracuse! Go Orange! I mean wooow Estonia
Go Cuse!
James Choi

Concise, informative, entertaining. With sources in the description. A+
I love Estonia
Feels like you figured it out, your last videos were great. I hope quality doesn't decrease when you produce more videos. Keep it up
HOLY DUCK I LIVE IN ESTONIA THIS IS SO COOL I CANNOT CONTAIN MYSELF
I am Estonian and even I didn't know some information about my own country. I learned something new from this video and I really liked it, thanks for making it!
Really cool story! keep up the good work guys
I got to Estonia as a coincidence and didnt expect anything from in. spent a month there and fell completley in love with it! Even old ladies selling hand made socks in a stall had a credit card terminal - everything was so easy and inviting
Estonia
I like this form of narration, it makes me feel a part of the topic. Keep up the good work!
Brilliant video!
For some strange reason, I only discovered Beme's youtube channel last night. Keep up the great content guys.
Beme is telling me stuff I didn't even know I wanted to know
brah
These videos are getting better every time, I've learned some interesting stuff form Beme, nice job guys!!
I think about this all the time... this concept isn't new in my mind anyway. I'm at doctor offices very regularly and am always thinking how stupid and wasteful it is to fill out paperwork each and every single freaking time. Are we just trying to support the logging industry?
Man this is the first video I watch from this channel and it's amazing !
I'll keep on watching
no mention of umru smh do your research
Amazing episode. Great work!!!
I wanna move to estonia
content is getting better
I rather have my government my information than some terrorists or hackers, Estonian government is defending me :)
Never miss an episode you guys make.
Does anybody think that it might be a bit overkill to have all the grades and financial records about the people ? I feel like it could be against the efficiency of the social ladder. If anybody can judge you from your financial records and grades from school.. Nope ?
It's no different from physical storage. Just because it's digital, doesn't mean the info is public.
Actually in paper system anyone can check you data and you dont even know it, in digital you can check who did it and ask whyor even watcher can lose job for that. People dont get that data in paper are more insecure and signature can be lot easly copy in paper than in ID card.
Well done Beme and your team, I'm Estonian and your information is legit!!! :)
Why does the former Estonian president have an American accent
He grew up there...
Estonians have different English accents. I also have American accent but some have British or even Australian accent.
When this started, Casey said they were going to test things out and see what works... Here's the thing.. Love the direction this is going and you are right up next to defranco on my watchlist!
So good, this needs to be in every country.
Mauz Shaikh
You would need good infrastructure for this. But I think this could work in some of the lower population states in the U.S.
Ike Okereke yup but not in the big States
It's just simplifying the system! The government already has all this info. This process just streamlines it so you're not constantly having to go to different departments or places to gather it for yourself.
Coming home from school to watch this video and finally learn something interesting.
Thanks Lou and keep up the good work!
I’m so glad casey isn’t hosting. it’s kind of weird that this is his company
Josh Rosenblum not that russia took almost every land from Estonia or anything like that or something
Its great so see country go so tech savvy. Hope everyone tries to make them an idol. But sure it is hard to do this in a bigger country. But still its pretty impressive and hopefully Estonia can retain its record of one of the best performing European nations. Goodluck and nice informative video mate
Big brother much?
Like the "Okay, that's today's episode" addition to "I'm going to go live my life"...totally feels like a complete closure now. Super interesting piece, never knew this about Estonia. Look-in forward to Jacks News videos on crypto. Keep living awesome guys, great work.

🇪🇪 ❤️
You're killin it, Lou.
Brandon Bohning hell yeah, Lithuania and Latvia have similar history but are a whole different story today
It's such a fresh breath of air.
im gonna be honest i used to dilike u dude but this channel is actually pretty cool keep it up u got the knowledge flowing
Insta-click (I'm estonian)
tere tere vana kere

This was very good :) it's the first video from Beme News that really felt to me like the ideas and writing style are hitting an appropriate niche to keep me hooked. Well done!
Hackers Heaven
everything digital, is. I have experience in that department, and I can assure you - there are way bigger / easier fish in the sea for us.
Like to see how some hacker can break throw 2048-bit public key encryption.
with a quantum computer they probably would @Mikk Nigol plus there are other security holes they cant protect an entire country from hackers.....
I agree, but what is counting in this situation?. If hacking is more expencive than harm what you can do, its becomes meeningless.
except for anarchysts who only want to prove a point and just for fun they dont need money, its not like hackers are bad people maybe they challenge people to come up with better security for when we fight the aliens...... :v
I used this for a presentation for school thanks guys
Finno-Ugric people the best!
Had no idea about this, I need this in my life, would make everything so much easier
Eestlased pange like
👍
Love the comments. It's either "Great video!" "Lou's a great host" or conspiracy theories on hackers.
Why the F Russia is not friendly?!
The US is?
just wondering...
So yeah, Russia isn’t a very nice neighbor.
ok, thanks
Ce Jota Estonia is a memebet of NATO and US is it's ally.
And why are they part of NATO? Because of Russia.
Russia constantly invades European air space and for countries like Estonia who don't have their own air force that is a real problem.
And not to mention cyber attacks, interference in elections and constant harassing in every way why the hell would Estonia consider Russia a friendly neighbour?
