  • I love shooting film under a full moon , its just magical and Im always amazed with the results. I spent two evenings this week chasing the moon around mounts Bay with the Chamonix 4x5 and a few sheets of Ilford HP5
I came away with three images , ones Kinda boring but Im ''Over the moon '' with shot 2 and 3 !!
I go into exposures and how I guess them based on previous failures and successes
I always develop HP5 with Zone Imaging 510 Pyro !!

Great images. This made me think about HP5's ability to capture the greys. It would me interesting to see how Delta 100/400 would react.

I have been thinking about trying delta at night . Obviously delta 400 would have to be 120 size . TBH the HP5 510 pyro combo is working so smoothly for me right now I would struggle to switch !

Austen , as per your recommendation (at 4.35), I just clicked the "like button". :-) p.s.: You did work hard for it.

So right, it is harder to get out the front door than to do it.

What EI for Ilford HP5+ 400 are you using? Any metering challenges? Love the images. Now ready to go out and try it myself. Thank you.

I develop at 800 times and I don't use a meter for these kind of shots , I just base my exposures on previous experience and definitely lean towards over exposure

Yes, getting out the door is the biggest hurdle. Especially for folks like me with loads of titanium in my spine. Great images for sure. Fine art (if there really is such a thing) is in the eye of the beholder. If you look real close, I think I saw Gary in the clock tower spying out your fine art technique! I really enjoy your videos and your perspective on photography and film. I’m going to go through all your videos and click the like button. Hopefully more people will tune in because your channel is real and it shows some of the reality of getting out there, learning from successful and not so successful outings. I appreciate your taking the time to video during your photography process because I know it’s a pain in the backside. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for taking the time to comment , I'm awaiting my titanium knee replacement, my life has changed since my knee died 2 years ago , all my photos over the last year are a short walk from my van , when I get a new knee then I will be all systems go.

I agree. Getting my butt out the door is sometimes difficult but when I do I am always glad I did. Great images. Always happy to see one of your vids pop up.

Austen, did a stint in fine art photography at UAL... The basic definition of fine art is that it has a concept, not how pretty it is or particular style
So fine art means the photograph has to mean something and presents some sort of message, agenda, idea.
For example one of my closest friends that continued the degree took a portrait of her friend and the concept was the idea is no one knows you 100% except you but they can know parts of you and your life. So with this portrait, she printed it and covered it with heat sensitive paint that goes transparent when it goes past a certain temperature threshold aka in this case it was above room temp and below body temperature so when you put your hand on it, you only see part of the image when you take it off.
Maybe this is how you can fight back against Gary on "fine art" ;) it's all about the concept!

That's a cool idea , I looked up the definition of fine art and Im afraid to say that some of my images are inline with that definition . So from this day forth I am to be known as a fine art photographer ! It might mean I can sell a few prints !

Thanks for sharing another great video. l liked the second photo best. I really must do some night photography soon but I`m not sure my beloved cocker spaniel, who joins me on my photo trips, would enjoy sitting out in the cold weather for long periods of time. I know he would be happy to sit in the car until my return but he would just go nuts when he sees me returning!!!

Yea . My dog is a constant companion but when I head out at night I leave her where she is comfy , at home on the sofa !
It would be too much hassle wondering where she is and she would trash the clean sand in front of the camera !

Thanks ! I was really pleased with the last 2 images. I couldn't sleep well last night so went out and shot a cloudy full 34/4 moon on the Hasselblad from 4 am to 630 am ! I then slept from 7-1030 am
Out again tonight with the 45 , looks like a clear sky so a different kind of look . I like clouds rather than clear skies at night right now
