Awesome! You're my Hero, yet again! Respect. It's amazing how much we learned by looking at μs worth of films! Cheers for posting!
Edit: Okay, this is kick arse! Mk 4:07 Seeing the Reflective Wave Bounce off of the surface is too cool! A minute before, when discussing the separation of the First Thermal Pulse and escaping Shock, ppl need to appreciate how little we knew ab the Mach Stem Effect and the various radiation release points and types. HEY ATOMIC TEST CHANNEL I HAVE LEFT THIS QUESTION ON MOST VIDEOS OF THIS SUBJECT NO ONE EVER LEAVE EVEN A GUESS!!!
THE BOMBS THAT ARE TESTED UNDERWATER DO THEY DO ANYTHING TO SEA LIFE? LIKE HAVE YOU EVER SEEN WHAT HAPPENS to SAY ON A LAKE WHEN SOMEONE TOSSES A STICK OF TNT IN THE WATER AND IT BLOWS UP, MASS AMOUNTS OF FISH FLOAT TO THE TOP OF THE WATER, A NUKE UNDER THE WATER WILL THOUSANDS OF FISH GO TOP SIDE FROM THAT BLAST? ONE MORE THING I DOUBT IT WILL,, BUT A NUKE BLAST UNDERWATER SEEN ON GROUND LEVEL BLAST PRODUCE THE BRIGHT LIGHT FLASH UNDERWATER?

I thought that's what they meant by high speed at first
I often wondered what it would be like if a chipmunk explained a nuclear explosion.
Radiation shows up on film as a sparkler effect, as flashes on the film. So you know this film has been exposed to a considerable amount of radiation. You can see it on many films, including many Chernobyl film reels. Radiation hits the reel of film and distorts the footage with bright flashes. I feel for the filmmakers!
Everyone involved in these tests got cancer later in life.
Anyone else amazed they had drones back then?
No!
First drone airplane was in 1917, drones is not a new invention. Also drone is just a fancy word for Radio Controlled airplane.
how do you land a 32,000lb drone??
Yes, but still. They were flying them at 30,000 ft. They had four engines on B-29s that had hundreds of switches and gauges. That's still amazing. They were flying them in formation flight in this video. I think that's amazing for back in the day. One of the B-29s had a hard time landing as you can see the Drone control operator flared out high at about 20 over the runway. @@BanterMaestro2-vh5vn

I appreciate these great videos. Must be said these were NOT intended to be seen by everyone. When these films were produced, the only way others could see it would be from a projector. You can't help but feel important being able to view these from any time. Back then, I imagine important people were partitioned and shown this behind closed doors. Generals. Senators?
Most of these productions were made for "in-house" use and definitely not intended for public dissemination. Some of the old EG&G (Egerton Germeshausen & Grier) declassified footage is a priceless classic view back at a very peculiar time, when the average American was blissfully unaware of the exact complexity of these things. But they were completely justified in regarding these things with a growing disdain and terror. Nobody wants a brief visit to the centre of the Sun.
Joseph Stalin saw them first. Thanks to Claus Fuchs, the resident Spy at Los Alamos.

No Atomic Clocks, back then!
Thanks for producing a video about The bomb on a technical level that shows some respect for the audience.
Actually these videos was never intended to be viewed by the public, these films was made for internal military use.
The first voice almost made me just go away. Ridiculous.

I've read about Crossroads many times, but most of this is new to me. Thank you for posting.
Excellent so much information. No EMP effect on the drone control. Interesting. Altitude and the ionosphere must be required for even short range effects. I may have learned something.
Analog.
transistor were invented in 1947, so they were using tubes and crystals.
Looks like I learned I don't understand EMP at all. rofl Well I guess that's ok, electrics is my weakness.
Cheers troops.

Actually, you're right. Plus the fact that old time vacuum tube electronics were not vulnerable to an EMP.

Drones have been used for how long now?!! Unmanned aircraft?!
Marilyn Monroe worked in a drone factory in WWII. They were used for target practice.
Yeah that’s crazy and we think drones are new tech ...
Nikola Tesla made a radio controlled boat in 1896. Was the first in the world. That's 124 years now.
Awhile the modern me-9 is from the MQ-1 from the early 1990s but technically unmanned balloons or drones date back over 200 years uavs were first used in military in 1849 when Austrian military deployed unmanned balloons loaded with explosives and released but in ww1 radio guided planes were used to attack zepplins but our version of drones more or less date to the predator which was used in 1991 the gulf war
Remotely controlled aircraft have been around basically since the invention of aircraft. The difference though is nowadays, a drone operator can sit in a comfy chair, a nice air conditioned room, with big fancy screens of everything happening, and at a mobile command base hundred or even thousands of miles away from the drone's actual location.
Back then you were sitting in an aircraft following within sight of the drone so that you could control it through your binoculars.
Admiral Blandy, commander of the Operation: "“The bomb will not start a chain-reaction in the water, converting it all to gas, and letting all the ships on all the oceans drop down to the bottom. It will not blow out the bottom of the sea and let all the water run down the hole. It will not destroy gravity. I am not an atomic playboy, as one of my critics labelled me, exploding these bombs to satisfy my personal whim."
@J Dial Blandy was ignorant about the dangers of radioactivity in the water and on the ships after the tests until he was informed by an actual expert (an Army colonel). It's a cool story, involving the x-ray of a fish.
@J Dial Bradley and his book are prominently mentioned in the Wikipedia article on the Operation. BTW, my father was an observer at Able test. I have some large format B&W photos of the test courtesy of Uncle Sam.
@J Dial Have you read ON THERMONUCLEAR WAR by Hermann Kahn? I am, it's fascinating and very readable. Kahn was the inspiration for Dr. Strangelove. Book's available on Internet Archive, gratis.
@J Dial About the early days of nukes, check out "Shockwave: Countdown to Hiroshima" by Stephen Walker and "109 East Palace: Robert Oppenheimer and the Secret City of Los Alamos" by Jennet Conant, both available on Amazon.

I've read ON THERMONUCLEAR WAR by Hermann Kahn. I think that he invented the word "megadeaths" - meaning millions of deaths. You're right; it's a good read.
"The lengthening stem and the bulbous head give it the appearance of a gigantic flower trying to span the distance between Earth and sky."
_That's what she said!_
People back then, probably due to wartime stresses, had absolutely _no_ sense of humor.

Love the high speed commentary!
10:15 Nuclear safety in the 1940's was "run for your life"
Re-capturing a drone after 43 min of flight! I figure the thing musta went over 50 miles, in 1946! We The people need gas-powered drones.
@@ozzymandius666 The nuclear test observations had pretty much unlimited budgets. No problem at all sacrificing military aircraft to get air samples.

The Americans make this stuff public. Why don't the Russians do so too?
1946 English: "Unfolded are a myriad of majestic, startling and awesome effects. A panoply that only the cameras can record in faithful detail."
2020 English: "uh.....wut? LOL. OK boomer."
google Hindenburg radio announcement.
Notice how they never show the bomb falling from the B29 on any footage from the Able test.Probably the uncut version remains classified or has been lost since then.
I think that was a B-50. Very similar to the B-29.
Yes, when the narrator said aircraft F13 was going to film the drop and decent of the bomb, I thought we were going to see the bomb leave the aircraft and descend. Something I have not seen before.
This is the second official film I have seen that says EMP is no problem. The other is where they built a town with a functioning power grid right under the blast. They put the wires back up after and it worked just fine.
EMP wasn't much of a problem back then, as the electrical systems were simpler and more durable.
Today, we rely on precision tolerances in our vital systems that would be overwhelmed, and absolutely wrecked, by that same EMP.
Case in point, vehicles - back then they were purely mechanical machines, but today use insane amounts of electronics that would fail.
Think of EMP as fire, and everything electrical as art. In that, I mean that back then we used stone carvings, so it would not matter. Today we rely on intricate but fragile oil on canvass.
Yeah, times have changed. Think of how many items you use that run on electricity- both outlet and battery-powered. An EMP will take Out all of them . Anything that's not shielded against EMPs
The EMP only has a destructive effect if the nuke is detonated in the upper atmosphere
There is very little EMP with low altitude nuke, much larger EMP is created when they explode at high altitude or space.
Incredible rare film though. Thanks.
The most impressive thing here is the radio controlled aircraft, especially for the time.
That chipmonk voice in the beginning was hilarious. It sounds just like those old newsreels from the 30's and 40's. Conan O'brien used to do that voice often on his old show.
Good thing theres a playback speed in the video settings.....now i can watch this video normally lol!
Original title of the video: How RC hobby begun
This was a gem. Thank you
Its amazing that drone aircraft technology was already so advanced in1946.
I didnt know they did a high speed video during operation crossroads for the able shot. Very cool video
With what those bombs cost you'd better believe they wanted as much data as they could gather. Plus they kind of wanted to know what they were dealing with too. When you're working with atomic weapons no one wants to hear you say oops. Although that did happen sometimes.
Very nice. They don't do it like that no more lol
Well, ok, the intro 🤣

At 14:25 they refer to Admiral Blandy. I worked with his grandson, Mike, for about a year, back in 1979 at Bell Labs in Whippany, N.J. He was the spitting image of the Admiral including the same square chin and crooked smile. I didn't know who Admiral Blandy was at the time but others told me that his grandfather was noteworthy after the war.
This was when a single second was broken into an eternity. High speed cameras were developed just to capture these micro seconds . Kodak was pumping out film like crazy. We now have no need for such film
Very thorough explanation of the tests performed.
What I'd like to know is, " Why weren't the drones, electronics, cameras affected by the EMP?"
Reminder set!
11:02 *No EMP detected?*
*Isaac Asimov wrote a short short story about A-Bomb ultra high speed photography. Hell-Fire*

Fascinating
So, why weren't the plane that dropped the bomb, the camera and weather planes, the drone planes, the drone boats, et cetera, Immediately and completely disabled by the EMP from the blast?
I am looking for a video that shows the very first milliseconds of the ignition of a hydrogen bomb. I have seen a single video here at NuclearVault that shows a blue glow appearing around the core just before the chain reaction begins. Unfortunately, I can no longer find this video. Can anyone give me a reference?
In the immortal words of that great American philosopher Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?"

Of course, it was a direct order
Oh no the bombardier has aimed wrong! He’s dropped it on Paris!!!

What were you told about staying away from that helium tank?
Excellent video again! Well done!
Where is all of the original footage that this film is compozed of? What of the bombs and tests would still be classified?
Nice. Drones in 1946
The Drones aren't disabled by the EMP during detonation ? 🤔
Lets find a tropical paradise and blow it up! What the US did to Bikini and its inhabitants is obscene.
8:34 The film getting more and more fogged as the plane approaches the cloud. Would have been interesting to see the entry.
Good nuke 👍 and like the is a bomb fireball bigger
this is critical information i wish i would've had in 1950's
Is there footage of the bomb being dropped?
The important fact I take from here is that they had advanced drones already shortly after the war. I only knew about primitive target practice drones from WW2.
It's not often one hears _any_ description of the first microseconds of a nuclear explosion. That was most interesting. What was also most interesting was the false conclusion: that electronics worked after the event, mistaken because the EMP generated by that event had little effect on the high voltage valva/tube analogue electrical circuits of the time. The person coming to that conclusion did so long before the age of low-voltage digital electronics. It's a different game now.
As you can tell from the start of this video, the earths atmosphere had a far higher concentration of helium compared to the modern day.
5:02 Mach stem triple point. Those ships got smacked *hard.*
“Oh, it’s beautiful!”
Brilliant. Thanks again.
Did I understand correctly, that they use remote control dronesin 1946 ?!
Probably more informative about what happens during a nuclear explosion than the proper science videos.

Freaking awesome...thank you
"Nuclear reaction is complete within a few millionths of a second.
OMG! I've been searching for this information for decades! I even wrote the DoE, but they never responded. I wonder how many (actual) millionths of a second does the reaction take?
For a fission device, the time to double yield is the time it takes a fission neutron (5MeV --> 0.05c = 1ft/20ns) to traverse the pit (about 6"), so it's 10 ns per doubling, with most of the yield happening in 20-30 ns. In this time, the high explosive blast travels 1/300th of an inch, so the entire bomb casing in intact after the nuclear ration ends.
A single fission reaction occurs on strong force time scales, 10^(-20) seconds, which is really fast.
@@DrDeuteron FVCK!
I figured the actual fission was really fast. It boggles the mind that the entire energy from fission starts in such a compact space then expands into what it becomes.
It boggles the mind further that this is nothing compared to what occurs in nature; aka neutron stars and the big mamma jamma that is a black hole (pun intended).
@@andreassheriff what surprises me is that neutron stars (and white dwarfs) are a basic prediction of quantum mechanics (there's a simple reason that the radius of a white dwarf divided by the radius of neutron star is the mass of neutron divided by the mass of an electron).
Also: black holes were an immediate prediction of general relativity.
Very nice !!!! Thanks.
8:51 Wait, what? Drone already exists in 1946?
