I was issued an M1 helmet with the regular cover and elastic band and I hardly keep things in the band aside from the bigger version of the P-38 can opener- some guys put the skinny cigarette boxes in the strap to keep them within reach. The rule was you didn't want to put anything on your helmet that the enemy can target on from a distance.
I've always felt that the "cloud" side of the Mitchell cover is massively underrated. One of the more unique patterns out there, and very cool to look at. Nice video mate.
I got only a couple sayings on my helmet and I got a helmet that is clean, I have “make sure to grow eyes on the back of your head “with eyes on the head band and the other saying is “are we having fun yet” I heard that from a Vietnam vet, I don’t worry about the little things besides the c rat cigarettes I got them and I’ve been buying soft pack of cigarettes cause they look almost the same, but I’m not a re-enactor I just do impressions, I got most the gear just waiting for vegetation to turn green again haha
I know these weren’t used much or for very long but I bought a PRR-9 helmet mounted receiver recently for $30, might add that to my helmet if i get it up and running.
Been wanting to come up with something unique to write on a Repro helmet cover for an RTO impression I’m working on. Might try to come up with something cheeky regarding the “5 Second” lifespan of RTO’s. You think “5 seconds to live? That was weeks (or months) ago!” Would work?
When I first started a Vietnam impression with my grandpa (who was in Vietnam in 195th Americal (please do Americal division impression) in Chu-Lai) and at first I had all this shit on my helmet and if you have enough stuff it can get heavy so I took most of the stuff off.
Nobody put all that crap on their helmet, and certainly didn't carry all that stuff on a patrol. No need for a church key in the bush, a P-38 on your dog tag chain was all that was needed. Bug juice was green and was carried on the helmet for quick access to remove leeches. The Ace of Spades card was black. It was the symbol of death. Smokes were not carried in the camo band unless you wanted crushed cigarettes
@@douglasclark3384 pouches are suppose to be semi lower then the flak for better access, also if it's a m55 or m69 both are extremely hot to wear especially with equipment strap over. good question tho you see a few but 85% of the time it's under.
This is how I made mine! Take a hand-sanitizer bottle and rip off the labels. Then fill it up with something yellow maybe food colouring or iced tea. Print out an insect repellent late war label and glue it on the front of the bottle. Then either get a black cap for it or paint the cap black. It turns out really good!

Put “are we having fun yet “and you could draw a fun meter, I heard that from an actual Vietnam vet, just an idea, i didn’t put typical stuff on mine
Seems pretty realistic

Does the field gear go over or under the flak jacket?
Mostly under
@@pepsiboi3798 Wouldn’t that restrict access to your ammo and canteens.

@Vietnam doge usmc who’s is it can you send a link

wet the helmet cover, not soaked, like damp. they pull it tight over the helmet, put your liner in.
