- Here's my 89 Gibson LP Standard with a new set of Lollar El Rayo pickups and Curt Mangan 10-46's. I am playing through my 73/64 Fender Deluxe Reverb with a Weber F150 and Sozo Caps. Also using my RMF Mogami 2524 cable. Fabulous tone, touch sensitivity, clarity, and sustain. The El Rayo's give my LP a bigger opportunity to fit in many band situations: Rock, Blues, R&B, Motown, and Country. The coil tap feature sounds incredible!
Sounds like a proper LP. Jason Lollar knows how to make pickups for sure.
Pilotproject82,
Many thanks for your kind words. Please keep in mind that I am also using a Tonepros bridge, Bourns 500k push pulls, my RMF Tone Maintenance Kit (Sozo caps included) and my RMF Mogami 2524 cable into my 73/64 Deluxe Reverb with TAD short Bottle 6L6's, sozo caps, Weber f-150 speaker. IMHO, you will love any Lollar product. The El Rayo's put the LP in a much more versatile place and can cover a bunch of musical genre's. All the best to you!
My favorite demo of these pickups. Sounds killer
My favorite demo of the El Rayo's so far. Excellent!!! Beautiful guitar! Beautiful tone! Beautiful playing my friend.
Great demo, great Lollar sound and great playing!!
They sound awesome!
Excellent demo with great tones and playing. I foresee a set of El Rayo where '57 Classics now reside.
Bridge and middle really tell the story, they sound killer, really full, round and musical.
That is a lovely versatile Les Paul...sounds like it'd work brilliantly in just about any style!
You just sold me on these. You are really a great player... I hate watching demos where folks just beat on the guitar and you can't really get a feel for what will happen when the guitar is being played with a little finesse. Very tasteful and soulful stuff. I have an '86 Paul Classic tobaccoburst '60 reissue that I will most definately be putting some El Rayo's in. I like that you can get that lower output spank with the warmth and fat low end that you expect from a Paul. Bravo.
Great sound. Lollar is the king of pickup makers, such nice acoustic properties. Your playing style adds a lot to the sound. The volume difference between split coil and humbucking is marginal it seems. Very good demo.
Wowww... Sounds amazing. Cant afford the El Rayos but would love to put them in my lp.
@rarch1968 ,
The El Rayo's give a lot of flexibility to a Les Paul for many music genres and different ensemble instruments. Many thanks!
The WGS Retro 30 is a killer sounding speaker too!
@Stratblooz ,
Hi, I am using Alpha 500k push-pulls...bourns work great also. I am also using my Tone Maintenance Kit and Mogami 2319 wire to the master volume pot (CTS 500K Audio Taper).
Thanks!
Is the present what i see under my chrismas tree in december 25, a les paul cherry sunburst whith bigsby tremolo and Lollar el rayo pickups !!!
Thanks for the video. If you’re also familiar with the lollar low wind imperials, Which do think would be more versatile for. jazz, rock , funk, country and blues between the two? These potential pickups would be installed in a chambered roasted alder body.
@mrwitzigwitzig
A bit tighter in the low end and bit more articulation. I definitely would use the El Rayo in the tele (I changed the Lowind to a minihumbucker at this point). I'll post some other tone with a more distortion. Many thanks!
Mmmm, the parallel coil tapped sounds great for that early motown R&B vibe, very soulful relaxed natural and almost acoustical on the video. Weird Lollar didn't recommend coil tapping them. Thinking about putting them in an HSH strat
Thank you .Its for my Vibrolux which has a 10 and a 12 in the cabinet.Its between the f150 and a WGS 12 C/S.THOSE LOLLARS SOUND GREAT!How do they sound distorted?
Great sound! I just got a guitar with El Rayos. The vol. and tone pots don't seem to be working as they should. Vol. drops of with an 8th of a turn of the pot and the tone has very little change in sound. They are 500 k. What size are in your Paul? Should I go to a lesser value because of the low output? Any info would help greatly! Thank you
Sounds fantastic! When you say coil tap, do you mean the coils in parallel or split? Or an actual series tap in the middle of the wind? Whichever it is, I want to replicate it when I get my El Rayo in.
Ina,
IMHO, the El Rayo is a bit different from a Lollar Imperial with a little less midrange and low end and very balanced (as are all Lollars). The Lollartron is a Filtertron with Jasons mojo. I now have aset of trons on a different Les Paul and a 77 335. Again IMHO, the trons nail the late 50's and 60's tone that you hear on so many recordings of the that era. Either way, you are making a great choice. What kind of guitar are you thinking about fitting these into? Thanks!
Hi Impressive tone ! What kind of pots do you use for the coiltapping ?
Wow, this must be the 1st El Rayo demo on YTube if not on the web :-)
It'd be great to read your opinions on:
1) How the El Rayo's compare to the Imperial humbucker?
2) Would you for example stick with the Imperial in neck on your white tele or consider the El Rayo?
Now to be really greedy: Any chance you could do a demo with low and higher levels of distortion? Cheers and keep posting your great demos!
My friend, you sound excellent. May I ask if you find these akin to P90s? A lot of reviews use that as the buzzword to relate to, but truly it sounds like a bright and airy PAF to me on this video? What do you think?
Kt2531,
I replaced all the pots with 500K. Are you El Rayo's 2 or 4 wire? Also, you may want to consider using a .047 cap (Sozo highly recommended) instead of the .022. What are you using for guitar cable? What kind of amp(s) are you using? Any effects? Maybe retry different tone settings (Treble, Mid, Bass) on the amp? IMHO, the Rayo's are very flexible to different tone settings..Let me know how it works for you. Many thanks again!
El Rayo vs Lollartron?
Pro and Con comments would be really appreciated.
Great Video!
Hello thanks for the fast reply. I am just getting over the flu and my brain is a little foggy. I had forgot about linear and audio. This is a custom les paul style guitar and it must have linear pots. I have to check the back of the pots. Did you leave the 300k pots in and if so did they work for you? This guitar is very bright and I was thinking of going from the 500k down to a 300k. Any thoughts would help a lot. Thanks again for you help and have a good weekend.
Merci loa ....Good guitar!! MegaFranc66
Hi, The 50 watt is little less bright. I think it sounds wonderful! All depends o your preferences and amp. Please let me know if you have any more questions or ideas.
Many thanks!
Kt253,
Are these pots in a gibson lp? Or some other kind of gibson. There is a real good chance the pots you are using have a linear taper not an audio taper. I recently acquired a 2002 Gibson LP and it had 300K linear pots on the pickups and 500K Audio pots for the tone controls.I am using CTS 500K Audio taper long shaft pots with my Tone Maintenance Kit which includes a Sozo .002 with 100K resistor (on the master volume and each individual volume control) and a Soz .047 for the tone cap.
Do you find the f150 to be a tad bassy sounding?
What do you think of that f150 weber.? 50 watt or 20?
hey Rick i think i want to add one of these into the bridge of my tagima it is the green semihollow that you put the lollar p90 in the neck... just leave me a message here i lost your number...kent
