"TODAY'S Tom Sawyer" is how the song starts out. It's not about the character in the book but about a modern day person who questions authority in the same manner as the fictional character did
Nobody sounds like Rush, because nobody can. They are absolutely unique, one of a kind, unicorn.. whatever you want to call it....All 3 of these guys are the best of the best at what they do. They are all regarded as some of the top players ever, individually, as well as together... This band, imo, is the best to ever do it. You have to dive deeper if you want to really understand how great they are. This song is amazing obviously, but its just the introduction to this band. They are the truth.
Huckleberry Finn is a top five book for me. His friend Tom Sawyer is iconic. We didn't read it as young as you did. And both books are certainly action packed. Heh. Anyway. Yes, both characters have left a huge footprint in our literary mythology. Tom Sawyer was a rebel who outsmarted everyone around him. And he held himself to a high which standard that often ran up against the standards of those in authority. The song imagines a modern Tom Sawyer.
While Neil would not rate himself as the greatest of all time (he was VERY reverential of other drummers, most particularly Buddy Rich), I think his greatness was in his innovation on the kit, technical ability, and compositional genius using the drums almost as melody and to accensuate the performances of his bandmates. Notably, he wrote almost all of Rush's lyrics - he was a voracious reader, poet, philosopher, and writer, too! That's why he was called "the Professor."
Xanadu, Exit Stage Left - features Neil playing basically anything you can hit with a stick, Geddy playing keyboards and a double neck bass, and Alex playing a double neck guitar - you'll love it! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐
😂 Okay, I see you, the Jack Black comment was hilarious! I never thought of it, but now that you say it, I could totally see his character in School of Rock trying to cover this & failing miserably. Lulu!! Great catch on the drummer... RIP "The Professor" 🥁 Neil Peart (Pronouced Pier-t) he was the GOAT percussionist. Every drummers favorite drummer, as they say. He wrote most of the lyrics to Rush's songs as well. Interestingly, he said that Tom Sawyer was the most difficult for him to play. He felt as he aged he got better & better at it. Even though he was the best he believed in constantly getting better at his craft. He told Rolling Stone, "What is a master but a master student?" That was Neil - deep thinker, humble, & hard working. I saw the comment about "Rush is only good because of Neil"... thats an absurd statement that no one would agree with. I wont argue with the person but they are 3 world class artists who taught us exactly what progressive rock is all about. YYZ "Live in Rio" is always a fun one to watch. "Spirit of Radio" is another popular reaction. Great lyrics. Neil Peart Drum Solo in Frankfurt
Neil Peart... your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. "No, his mind is not for rent To any god or government Always hopeful, yet discontent He knows changes aren't permanent But change is..."
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the greatest American novels ever written. Read it again as an adult and you will hopefully see the themes in a different light.
Well... Rush (Neil, actually) didn't write this song. This is one of the few songs that no band member penned the lyrics for. It was a friend of the band who was responsible for the lyrics. Most fans don't evne know this unless they actually read the album notes. But in the context of the character, Tom Sawyer was the classic "rebel" going against the norm and not caring about people's opinions.
Speaking of late great Neil Peart aka "Professor", he stated that Tom Sawyer is the hardest to drum out of all Rush's songs. Because of complexity of timing and rhythm.
As great as this video is, it doesn't begin to impress as much as seeing them live. Especially when Geddy Lee is singing, with the bass hanging from his neck while playing keyboards and operating the foot pedals. Yet they are always 100% in sync with each other. They aren't human. Recommend checking out live footage of Xanadu from 'Exit...Stage Left' and YYZ from 'Rush in Rio'. Anything from those two live albums is phenomenal.
I read a lot of Stephen King when I was in middle school. Stephen King has a weird obsession with vehicles: Christine, It Came From A Buick 8, Trucks, etc... Anyway, Rush, the best thing to ever come from Canada. And Neil Peart is considered to be the absolute greatest drummer who ever walked the planet. RIP Neil
Funny you should mention School of Rock, Jack Black is a huge Rush fan and was one of the commentators in their rockumentary Beyond the Lighted Stage. Try La Villa Strangiato if you want to see these guys really spaz out on the instruments.
Have you played Spirit of Radio. I never heard a better guitar intro. Also the song has a story about Disc Jockeys over saturated radio with commercials. The actually made an animated video that has Neil peart drivg his convertible vetted. Vette I like this more than Tomsayer. Lmk what you think
This is a strange song to be considered a classic rock anthem... it is full of little musical intricacies and odd time signatures and Progressive elements that they managed to sneak past the average listener. I suppose that is part of the Brilliance that is Rush's they were able to get higher Concepts and genuinely powerful musicality into music that was also commercially viable. I can't think of a more odd classic rock record than moving pictures but this album did sell a ton for them, way more than their previous decade of Music at it and it was certainly a big big Radiohead. Kind of strange as you said it's got a lot of very memorable little elements in it that are also kind of weird when you listen to them.
Give this vid a 👍for more Rush reactions!

One among many great things about Rush is their attention to detail in the live shows. Phenomenal.
Quite simply three geniuses at the peak of their creativity and masters of their art.
A rabbit hole full of wonder!! YYZ in Rio ,drum solo in Frankfurt, and the whole first side of 2112 .
Greetings from YYZ 🇨🇦

It’s not really about the book. It’s looking at what he would be like in modern times. The book is more of a reference but not the source material.
Tom as an archetype.
TODAY's Tom Sawyer, yes.
Hey Guys ,I have seen RUSH in Halifax ,Nova Scotia, Canada , Best live Progressive Rock band ever!!😊
Glad you are checking out Rush! A deep well for you to dive into.
Best concert I ever went to! Fact

RIP The Professor.

Long live RUSH
Speaking of late great Neil Peart aka "Professor", he stated that Tom Sawyer is the hardest to drum out of all Rush's songs. Because of complexity of timing and rhythm.
Your right. Here he looks like Grezelda the witch on the Hilarious house of Frankenstein
This song will kink the spring of any bobblehead. 😅
In fact, the drummer is the baddest ass of all time!
My sister calls Geddy a witch, too.
