It's kinda of sad when you think about all he went through from childhood to his end. But he was such a beautiful person, so talented. Everyone will remember him for his talent, but he will also be remembered as a loving kind man, who overcame so much and conquered the music world. Thank you Hap.

FREDDIE MERCURY IS THE NUMBER 1

  • @unravelingfast2198

Freddie was a great pretender. He said in an interview that the macho image he portrayed on stage was an act, not really him. Musically he was quite willing to do what he wanted. He loved being part of Queen but his solo work was more Freddie than Queen wanted to be. Freddie wanted to be a legend and he was, but he lived in a time so different than ours that he also had to be careful not to go too far. I've thought about it and the Freddie we knew could only have existed if everything happened just as it did in his life. It's obvious really but if you stop to think about it, it is amazing that the people, the life experiences, the times, all had to come together just as they did to make Freddie and all of Queen what they are. Serendipitous.

Freddie and company spent all night actually re-creating all those past videos. He left his mustache on then shaved right before he sang the song. There was info in a documentary about it taking around 14 hours. He loved that song and said it fit him perfectly because he was just pretending on stage - like acting. That wasn’t the real life him.

Mastering the art of smiling through the pain. This song is a classic and Freddie is amazing at taking on this song. You'd think he wrote it himself. At some point, aren't we all pretenders. Love your reaction to this song, both with words and facial expressions. 🔥👍🌠❣ Peace J ✌ ☮

Yes! That's the one to watch! Love when he says he looks like Jayne Mansfield-- then turns around, runs his hands down his sides, and bemoans not having the (female) shape for the outfit he's in the process of being dressed in. Also love, as the 3 men gradually morph into women, Peter Straker repeatedly slapping Freddie on the ass. Priceless video and SO glad they recorded and released it!

  • @janetschulman7649

Yes, you got all the Innuendos, no pun intended. I don’t know, yes he pretended to be those characters but he was a man of many faces. Most of us don’t act the same when we are home in our private moments. He thought he was boring when not out in public and sort of apologized for it. When he got sick he learned what and who really mattered, his close friends, his cats, his Garden Lodge, watching his pond fish and being himself.
Guess he thought he had to be on all the time because he was afraid of being alone. He never let himself be alone and died with all his most precious few around him.
Yes I do believe he will always be alive to me. It never fails when I see him performing or just talking he brings such joy to me. He IS a one off not WAS.

Great reaction to a great video. Loved your deep appreciation for the creativity of this video and Freddie's GOAT voice. And yes you can find Freddie's comments on doing this song becuz he related to the lyrics. And yes that is Freddie and Roger dressed up as women along with Freddie's close friend Peter Straker. Freddie actually reenacted scenes from older videos with him singing The Great Pretender lyrics. Highlighting all the different characters he's played affirmed that he was indeed The Great Pretender. And yes don't we all pretend that he's still around? Such a endlessly entertaining genius! 💖

You are right, this is a cover, but is sooooo right for Freddie that could have been written just for him.
Those lyrics really suits him like a glove, a classy glove, of course.
And he did wear his heart like a crown.
What to say about the red hair Freddie and the blond Roger? Sweet 🤩🤩🤩
And yeah, I wish Freddie was still around, he would make our lives so much sweeter.

Great reaction, Hap! Loved watching this video again. I'm guessing most high profile people, especially artists, do quite a bit of pretending in public. It's the best way to keep your private life your own. If a person is lucky, they have a partner in their private life to share it with. Freddie always seemed to be striving for that and he did appear to be successful at times. He certainly put a lot of emotion into the lyrics he wrote. What a complex, interesting, life he led - he packed so much into such a short time. Truly impressive. There will never be another.

    PETER STRAKER
Born in Jamaica, Peter Straker is known to more than one generation of music fans and theatre goers. He first shot to fame in 1968 when he starred as Hud in the original London production of ‘Hair.’ Straker has starred in countless West End productions since, including Pete Townshend’s ‘Tommy’, Ken Hill’s ‘The Original Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Hot Stuff’, ‘Blues in the Night’, ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, ‘The Rat Pack’, ‘One Love’ and ‘Holding On’; these last two both with Ruby Turner. His classical roles include Cassius in ‘Julius Caesar’, at Bristol Old Vic, and Lucio in ‘Measure for Measure’ at the National Theatre.
Recently he reprised his role in ‘The Wiz’ with Birmingham Rep, and starred in The Hackney Empire’s ‘Cinderella’, The Landor Theatre’s ‘The Glorious One’s’. Lately Straker has performed in The Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, in a concert performance of ‘Piaf’ with The Matthew Jones Orchestra, and his critically acclaimed one man show ‘Peter Straker’s Brel‘ returned to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013 after sold out performances earlier that year at the St. James Theatre in London. Peter has made several appearances in film and on TV and became a well-known face playing Dev in the hit series ‘Connie’ with Stephanie Beacham and is known to Doctor Who fans as Commander Sharrel, in ‘Destiny of the Daleks’. Peter Straker’s recording career has been no less notable, with projects for many major record labels including The Alan Parsons Project ‘I Robot’, Freddie Mercury’s memorable ‘Barcelona’ with Montserrat Caballé and backing vocals in The Great Pretender. Straker has an extensive back catalogue of recordings and solo albums, two of which were produced by Freddie Mercury, namely ‘This One’s On Me’, and ‘Changeling’. A discography which Peter Straker actively promoted by headline tours and one-off concerts throughout the UK and Europe.

Yes, that's Rogerina!😁 And Freddie and Peter Striker as backing vocals! Freddie recreated scenes from old(er) videos but this song is a cover he said he always wanted to do. About his feeling od loneliness and hiding his true self, I remember Ratty's book (that you also have, highly recommend it to read) where he mentioned a situation in a dressing room after a show when Freddie suddenly said to Brian, Roger and John: "It's easy for you, you all have families and homes! I can never have that, I can never be happy!" Ratty was shocked and felt very sorry for Freddie, he never knew Freddie had all that emotions hidden - I guess, that's what the Pretender meant, he did wear a mask, pretending most of his life..I'm happy for finally being able to watch your channel, I changed location to the coast (for sun, beach, resting, what can I say, It's torture 😁) due to vacation and had awful internet connection till today. Just on time to see this, missed your 2 cents!

So sad isn't it? Not only died shortly before he would have survived HIV but also now he could have a family. I guess back then he could have also (just not legally) So far to go but also how far we've come when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community.

    • @3ScotsInk
      @3ScotsInk 3 роки тому +3

@@nanner3200 Yes, thank you. Freddie today could be legally married and, like Elton John, making all the babies with his husband he wanted. But I believe Freddie was here exactly when he was supposed to be, and did exactly for fans and the world that he was supposed to do. Sad as it was and is, and considering Freddie said from the time he was a teenager that he'd never make "old bones," I think he knew his time here was very limited, which motivated him to pack 10 lifetimes into 20 years w/ Queen, leaving us gift after gift after gift. And, finally, his allowing the world to know his death was from AIDS, he gave us a final gift-- his death, after a series of others w/ huge names like Rock Hudson, Anthony Perkins, and Liberace, was integral in changing people's minds about the gay community and about so many dying of this terrible disease. Thank you again, Nanner-- and thank you Freddie. We still love you.

I love how Roger & Freddy supported each other in their solo careers (Freddy did back up on a few of Rogers’ solo projects too). One of Freddy’s close friends, Peter Freestone I believe, described Roger & Freddy as platonic soul mates. They were the extroverted party rockstars of the group, played tennis together...they were just great friends and sometimes sparring partners. It’s fun seeing them together outside of Queen, also. Most people don’t notice that Freddie is recreating old solo and Queen videos with old footage and recreations from this video shot in 1987. He’s showing how he’s “the great pretender” and saying those are part of him but not him as he’s lonely and pretending he’s ok but he’s not. I watched the original song by The Platters and while it’s really good, this cover by Freddie and the whole cinematic journey he takes us on is on another level. Great reaction dude!

HAP... You made me CRY with your insightful comments about our "pretending" coping mechanisms. (I think the HEAT wave over here has made me all unexpectedly emotional!!🥵😤😭🤪). I never thought about these lyrics from that perspective.💔 I also never thought about the "spin" on this song, being that all of us who love Fred so much are ALL great pretenders, aren't we, by keeping him alive in every way we can. (And that's okay!)💕
When you mentioned the "It's A Hard Life" video, I remembered that you have reacted to the live version in Rio... BUT, I think the BEST one is from Tokyo in 1985. (When Fred sings those opening lines, he does the first one HIGH... then drops waaay DOWN to a baritone on the second line!)🤯I'm always intrigued with seeing Fred's body language in conjunction with his singing: How he raises his arm when he's holding one of those "AY OH" high notes and he raises up on tiptoes when he's singing high parts in a song. This Tokyo video shows the clearest example of that: After he does the high part... he drops down to one knee before singing the lower line!🤔

Appreciate your thoughts. The timeless music of Queen and Freddie Mercury is always as fresh and modern as if it has just been recorded. In The Great Pretender Freddie gives an amazing performance, blending all those old clips of his recordings, but there is an underlying sadness in the lyrics, as if it reflected his life experiences. Yet, as you say, he lives on in his music. PS I am old enough to remember the original song by the Platters!

Great video. Not just scenes from other videos but recreated scenes!
Yes the backing singers are Freddie Roger & the great Peter Straker
For 1970s Sci-Fi/Dr Who fans Peter played Commander Sharrell in Destiny of The Dale's.
For 1980s British Comedy he appeared in Connie with Stephanie Beacham.
For musical theatre fans he has played most leading male roles since he shot to fame in 1968 with the cast recording of Hair. I saw him a few times on stage early 1970s & followed his career before he became freinds with Freddie.
For Queen/Freddie Mercury fans, he was great friends with Freddie and did some backing vocals on the Barcelona album. Freddie also produced Peters 2nd album mid 1970s and also did backing vocals on several of tracks.
Last March I was due to see Peter in London for his final night in La Cage aux Folles but a week before the UK went into lockdown so the last week was cancelled. In December when things relaxed a bit he announced a one man show at Zedel London but again restrictions were brought back in before it happened so it was cancelled. Can't wait to see Peter again soon either as an actor or singer.
Would be great if you could react to Peter Straker's Heart Be Still where Freddie's backing vocals can clearly be heard. A video with remastered audio was released last year. Strange watching Peter in his 70s miming to his voice when he was in his 30s but it is the best audio I can find

he forgot he needed a b side
so he asked mike to play something classical and he would improvise
'excersises in free love' no particular reason for the title
he thought it would be funny on the back of great pretender to pretend to be a soprano
this is what they performed to Monstarat to brake the ice
she thought it was a gift liked it had Mike write it out and they performed it at covent garden, she put lyrics to it
it was worked on to become Ensuno which is on the album

I'm back for the 5th or 6th time rewatching your reaction, this was such a creative video just so well done. His incredible talent and his bigger than life stage presense are still out there floating around the universe forever. In a hundred years this video will still look like it was just released yesterday because of the attention to every detail and the quality of film he and Queen always insisted on. He was the ultimate performer and is so missed 👑

he didn't know he had AIDS when this was recorded in Jan 87,released in Feb 87
he found out in April 87
he started getting what looked like blemishes which turned out to be sarcoma skin cancer
in 86 after the tour he realised something serious was wron and told the band he was done touring
he did this single which got to no 4 uk
    then Barcalona single
they decided to do an album but between doing the two he found out and told Montsarat
I don't think he told Mike Moran though

Maybe roger was hoping Freddie would change his mind but Freddie had said he wasn't touring anymore and wanted to do his solo and was only willing to record as Queen if after an agreed brake they all really wanted it and agreed to doing things differently
At this point Roger wasn't sure what the situation was but still supported Freddie
Later in the year Freddie did backing for a track for rogers new band the cross
Freddie also did the lead while he was there which they used after freddie died
Brian played guitar on one of freddies tracks on his solo album 87 which was never finished as he did barcalona so it ended up being a Queen track
John played bass on one of the barcalona tracks
I love how Freddie is being playful with peter so roger puts his hands on his hips
    Hey im pretty too!
Freddie strokes his chin!of course you are pretty boy!
The doc shows they had fun doing this video
And that's something for roger who hated doing videos even for his own songs!
But this and brake free he enjoyed for some reason!?
He liked showing off how pretty he was!

As others have pointed out, the third drag queen in the video is Peter Straker. Peter has been a leading light in British musical theatre for over 50 years & is still working. I think he was the original Phantom. He and Freddie were great friends, & admired each other's singing voices. Freddie produced some of Peter's recordings and sings backup on some of them. They supposedly had a falling out during Freddie's last months on earth, reportedly because Peter got too intrusive about Freddie's illness when Freddie hadn't revealed the nature of it to all but a few trusted friends. Maybe he thought Peter couldn't keep a secret. Who knows?
Anyway, I want to suggest that you react to Peter's video of "Heart Be Still," a most beautiful song that doesn't get enough attention. ua-cam.com/video/CwSUXe_Cnnk/v-deo.html

Great reaction! I love this video. My understanding is that it was quite costly to recreate all those scenes. I loved watching and waiting to see how long it would take you to realize the women as Freddie, Roger, and Peter. Didn't take you long. Your face when you discovered it was hilarious and of course your comments spot on. Thanks! Fun fact: I saw the costume person, Diana Moseley, in an interview. She said they used the wrong side of the material when the made the suit he was wearing. She was mortified when it arrived but there wasn't time to have it redone. They all decided to pretend like it was supposed to be that way so Freddie wouldn't know. He ended up loving it!
You might enjoy the behind the scenes for this. It's not long. ua-cam.com/video/YzxgmB-AGl0/v-deo.html

Please look at the extended version or the making of The Great Pretender..pleeeaassssee.... would love to see your reaction. You see Freddie and Roger and Peter Straker have so much fun getting ready.. They went right into the night making this, apparently they quite a lot of drink and they had fun and laughter all day and into the night. Roger was a great long time friend to Freddie and did backing on Freddie's album Mr. Bad Guy... Roger said that album took ages and Freddie would call him in but the album was no further along!.. but Roger and Freddie were the proper fun guys and naughty guys of the band!!....

there's an anime called great pretender which is quite popular
they used Freddies cover as the end credit song
they had an animated cat walk through the curtain as Freddie did and three singing backing cats!
all based on Freddies actual cats!
    even some parachuting!
then brought it into the story
the cat was swimming but nearly drowning and I felt myself getting upset!
they were clearly fans of Freddie beyond just likeing his version of the song
(wish they hadn't had Freddie cat cleaning himself though!)
    a few people
'Freddie do as you like with my music but don't make it boring'
Araki (author of jojo bazarre) oh ok I'll make a stand killer Queen with abilities shear heart attack and bites the dust !
He uses a lot of music refferences throughout the manga
    Queen
    Ogre battle
Killer queen off shear heart attack
Not sure if jojo fans realise theres a song shear heart attack
    Bites the dust
    Bicycle race
    Made in heaven
    Crazy little thing called love
    Bohemian rhapsody
Ryōta Kosawa a stand ill make a whole series!
( they dont actually think he named it that because of Freddie or inspired by Freddie I dont think but either him or an animator was clearly a fan!)
