Some impressions of Madrid - I've been there only once...a long time ago, and only briefly, but I will contrast it with 2 Iberian cities I have spent a lot of time in: Barcelona, and Lisbon. Madrid: Very "Imperial". Not exactly 'Human Scale". Mostly laid-out in a grid pattern. Lots of symmetry, and elegant buildings - a little "cold". The People - well...they look like they buy a lot of shit! Consumer oriented, and look like they would shop at Target, or Old Navy! I don't see much "Individualism". Barcelona in comparison: More "European" in general. The city's Medieval and Gothic warrens, like Barrio Gotic, El Born, and El Raval are more Maze-like, and thus - full of surprises at every turn! The people seem more sophisticated, and more attractive, while being somewhat aloof. Lots of interesting Fashion statements! Barcelona is on the sea, and so the maritime vibe and light softens any bracing harshness. - and Lisbon, ahh...Lisboa! Certainly not as elegant as either city - a little rough around the edges, and thread-bare in some quarters, but WHAT Atmosphere! The laryrintine layout, and it's many hills, (with the exception of Baixa) gives it a more "Feline" sensibility and even a ferrel quality that makes it more mysterious. It's also a seafaring city with an enormous History, and a good dose of fatalism, due to the 1755 Earthquake, and the loss of a once Great and vast Empire! But those things shape the people of Lisbon! There are so many interesting faces, and attitudes! I find the young men and women of Lisbon to be quite sensual, and ribauld. The Nightlife feels "Hot", and flirtatious. I spent more than a year there, and I met so many "Tourist" from Madrid going there for the weekend...that says VOLUMES! - But WTF do I know...I live in Philly!!!
@@hecf4668 yeah,. Asked my self the same. I work in a hostel and I can say most of the tourist love everything about Madrid, and all of them prefer Madrid's people than Catalans.
Norwegian here (Trondheim ✌🏼). More European? Barcelona is more “catalonian”, sure about it, but... more European? I’ve never listened that. All Europe’s cities are European. Vienna isn’t more European than Rome, Oslo isn’t more European than Freiburg or Berlin. Europe, fortunately, is composed by a lot of regions (olde kingdoms) and nations, There isn’t one single Europe!! Herregud!!! I really don’t understand your point...
