প্রিয়নাথ মুখোপাধ্যায় (১৮৫৫-১৯৪৭) ছিলেন একজন বাঙালি লেখক এবং কলকাতা পুলিশের গোয়েন্দা বিভাগের পরিদর্শক। তিনি তাঁর গোয়েন্দা বই “দারোগার দপ্তর”-এর জন্য পরিচিত ছিলেন। তাকে বাংলা গোয়েন্দা সাহিত্যের একজন পথিকৃৎ হিসেবে গণ্য করা হয়ে থাকে। গোয়েন্দা বিভাগে তাঁর ৩৩ বছরের অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে তিনি গোয়েন্দা বইটি দারোগার দপ্তর লিখেছিলেন।গোয়েন্দা কাহিনির একটি উল্লেখযোগ্য বৈশিষ্ট্য হচ্ছে, গোয়েন্দা চরিত্রটি একসময় পাঠককে এতটাই আপ্লুত-আচ্ছন্ন করে ফেলে যে লেখকের নামটি তলিয়ে যায়-এ কথা মনে রেখে বলা যায়, বাংলা গোয়েন্দা সাহিত্যে অবদান রয়েছে অনেকের। ‘ডিটেকটিভ’ নামের গল্পের মাধ্যমে এ জগতে কিছুটা স্পর্শ রেখেছিলেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরও। কিন্তু বাংলা গোয়েন্দা কাহিনির শুরুটা পুলিশের গোয়েন্দা শাখার কর্মকর্তা ও লেখক প্রিয়নাথ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের হাতে। তাঁর ‘দারোগার দপ্তর’ এবং রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের ‘ডিটেকটিভ’-দুটি গল্পেরই প্রকাশকাল ১৮৯২। তবে গোয়েন্দা কাহিনির ধারাটি সৃষ্টি করেন পাঁচকড়ি দে (নীল বসনা সুন্দরী, মায়াবী)। আর কিশোর গোয়েন্দা সাহিত্যের ধারা সৃষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে হরিসাধন মুখোপাধ্যায়ের লেখায় (আশ্চর্য হত্যাকাণ্ড)। পাঁচকড়ি দে, দীনেন্দ্রকুমার রায় প্রমুখ পাশ্চাত্যের গোয়েন্দা কাহিনি কখনো সরাসরি, কখনো দেশোপযোগী করে প্রকাশ করেছেন।
Who was the first writer of crime fiction in the Bengali language? Most are agreed that the honor falls to an ex-policeman, Priyanath Mukhopadhyay, who served in the detective department of the Calcutta police force for 33 years, from 1878 to 1911, and edited Darogar Daptar (The Inspector’s Files), the first-ever periodical dedicated to crime stories in the Bengali language. In the introduction to his autobiography of 1911, Mukhopadhyay wrote: “I have served for many years in the detective department. From time to time, I publish in the pages of Darogar Daptar some of the cases that I have solved - and sometimes failed to solve.” What follows is one of the crimes Priyanath solved, and in the process unmasked perhaps one of the most ingenious of criminals. The story was titled Fantastic Author, and appeared in the Ashar 1301 issue (or June-July 1894) of Darogar Daptar. Mukhopadhyay starts his account by referring to a series of complaints emanating from the registry office. He reminds us of the current law of the land concerning the registration of publications: “This was not very long ago. At that time, the rules of the registration office were not the same as it is now. At that time, the rule was that three copies of any book published in the land had to be submitted at the registration office and the government would pay the cover price of those three copies to the publisher. Now the rule about submitting the copies remains the same, but the government no longer pays for them. This change was instituted after the incident which I am about to recount. From that point onward, publishers have been deprived of the price of their copies.”
Mukhopadhyay, who was with the investigative wing of the Kolkata Police from 1878 to 1911, wrote the legendary "police mystery" series Darogar Dophtor (The Inspector's Files) that started in 1892 and which, over 206 stories, ran for twelve years.
