    That's crazy with all that being abandoned. At least it's finally going to be used. I love that with the old tram on display.

    I knew you'd like that system ^^ ! It uses the same 1982 BN trams as the Belgian Coast Tram, except that Charleroi still has them in their original form (Charleroi even still had some trams in their original creme white and orange livery with a blue stripe a few years ago), but they started to mod them very recently as part of the works to get that abandoned line going ! To give you a bit of context: Charleroi used to be a rich industrial city and that's partly why they built that metro tram. But then all the industries started closing one after the other and the city became a poor city with a lot of crime etc. The tables are now turning though, as Charleroi has recently started to recover slowly

      Charleroi is the best, jogged along the Sambre to Marchienne and back today. Surreal, unique experience. Loved it.

    Great video! This city’s metro tram is very unique because of the fully completed but not opened Line 5.

      Not opened yet*, the city received funding to finally open it as they're building a huge brand new hospital at the end of that line

    Reminds me of German Stadtbahns you would find in the Ruhrgebiet/Rheinland area. Just somehow even more run down haha.

    Some of those metro stations do look very outdated and some have permanently closed and are in need to be reopened in the future.

    Should be refurbished, extended, and just generally finished as the new line M5 by 2026. Only 40 years late!

    Apparently the result of these abandoned lines are the result of a botched up implementation of Belgian waffle politics, where both the French and the Dutch must make investments match with one another.

      Not only that, the city's economy completely collapsed at the same time, going from rich industrial to poor with closed industries. The most famous industries there were the mine shafts that were the first to close back in the 60's, then all the metallurgic companies that left later

    Not much street running to be seen on this tram...

    • @benolifts
      @benolifts  Рік тому +2

      Thats how a like it to be. Trams running on the street are a worse scenario than a bus. They have to go slower due to having longer emergency braking distance. Also they can't go around bends as quick as a bus. And they can't drive around obstacles. In my opinion trams that run entirely on the streets are not worth the money. I feel that trams should have no more than one quarter of the route on the street. This is so they can get into certain areas where is it isn't possible to for the tram to have a dedicated route, such as where space is limited. But this should only be done in certain situations where it is useful to to do this, but in my opinion the main part of the route should be segregated.

      @@benolifts I concur, sir. It's just that should they be called light rail rather than trams if they don't run on roads at all?

    • @benolifts
      @benolifts  Рік тому +2

      @@JP_TaVeryMuch It does run on the road in some parts of the route. I guess I film the parts I find the most interesting and I find the dedicated sections the most interesting

      @@benolifts A tram on street is in no way worse than a bus because it can transport more passengers than a bus and also better for the environment. People with this way of thinking were responsible for the operation of busses on the intact rails of Charleroi's Metro Line 3 untill 2013. They had the line and the electrical system in place because it was necessary to reach the depot but let busses run on it.
