15 Difficult To Grow Succulent Plants

- We all have that one plant we just cannot grow. Well, at least i have. And it is not just one plant, it's quite a few.
Succulents are known for being hardy plants, definitely not difficult. But many have evolved in certain climates and we grow them in completely different conditions. This is bound to have consequences.
While many succulents have adapted to these new conditions, others have not. Some are also much more attractive to fungal disease and pests. And then these succulents are hybridized, creating new cultivars that are equally difficult to grow.
I own a plant nursery called Fern Farm Plants and have been growing succulents and other plants for over a decade. Over 400 different cultivars have gone through my hands and some are definitely harder to grow than others. In some cases i'd grow thousands of the same plant, so it's not just the one or two.
However, my experience with the succulents in this video may not apply to everyone.

I live on opposite side of the world and in my Mediterranean climate some of these succulents are super easy to grow, with none problem, not even aphids nor mealybugs. But I have some other succulents that are though to grow. I think it is a matter of local climate rather than a plant itself.
Yes- you are 100% correct. Your climate and even just local year on year weather can make a difference. I now try to remember to say in every video that my experience may not necessarily be the same for everyone & that much may depend on where in the world you are 😅
I have photos of huge PVN's and Purple Pearls i grew a few years back. It was dry with little humidity. Then we had a year with more rain and all these problems started 😅Even the mealybugs are more active out here when it's more humid 😖

I agree 1000% I lost all my succulents and its really devastating so I stopped collecting and shift to ornamentals. The good thing about experienced succulents growers its not hard to take care ornamental plants😂❤
Oh noo, sorry to hear that 😥I completely understand the shift to ornamentals- sometimes it's just not worth it buying plants that end up dying. I now completely avoid succulents that cannot cope outdoors 😅

The amount of mealies that get on black knight is unreal! 😢
It's insane! I've tried so hard with black knight but they get past all my defences and then i have to quarantine the plants around 🙄So much work 😅

Wow, I have issues with at least half of the listed plants. I'm so glad to know it is not just me. I think I will stop purchasing because it is frustrating and a waste of money when they eventually die. Thanks for sharing.
Tbh, i think that is a good idea- some plants are just not worth it. There's heaps of nice, solid succulents out there that will tolerate and grow well in unfavourable conditions. I don't really grow or sell these anymore either. Too much effort and then my customers are not happy when they die. Hardy succulents all the way 😀💚
I have lots of trouble growing Green Sedum
, if that is it correct name. A very dense, thick leaf plant, obviously related to the blue sedum, but it’s not as bad, it just rots, I had it growing beautifully then all the leaves just start dropping when in Spring then in summer it won’t survive, I am in Brisbane, it’s under 50% shade cloth and in Cacti & succulent potting mix! It’s very unlikely if it will survive summer.
Hmmm, it could be a variety of Sedum that goes dormant over summer and loses most of it's growth. I have a few of these (Sedum lineare cultivars)- they grow really well in Spring, then die fully or partially, then come back again.. They don't like the heat much..
I was about to say the same thing about when it's dormant. If you have a look at this woman's video on blue succulents there is a blue jellybean succulent in there and that's when I learned it's active seasons. I think our blue birds in Australia like giving these a hard time.
Curiously, my Sedum adolphi doesn't appear to suffer from mealybug, unlike most Echeverias. Even though it gets some leaf damage from weather/pests, the colour is great. I grow some in the garden in full sun and add unmarked cuttings to arrangements for colour. Thx for video.
Agreed- the colour is incredible and really make it stand out 🧡💛 I wish i was so lucky- here the mealies loooove them 😭 I also tend to grow them in the garden as i can't sell them with all those marks and it's quite stunning ❤

such a great list, i have almost every plant on it! Am fortunate that i haven't had mealy bug issues, perhaps cos i remove flower stalks as soon as i see them trying to pop up. Worried about my frilly ones though, as they get bigger
So glad to hear mealies are not worrying you👍 😀They definitely like flower stalks though some of the plants on the list get them (at least mine do 😅) even when the plant is not flowering 😖 They drive me nuts 😅😅
I bought the majority of these succulents in the past and they all died on me. I thought I was a bad plant parent, but it turns out it was more them than me! 😅

Agree with most. I've tried to propagate PvN by leaf but without success. Any tips on successful propagation?
In my experience PVN leaves propagate best if you take them off about mid spring. I'd also suggest to not put them on top of potting mix but rather keep them dry, in a plastic tray, in shaded but very bright spot until you see leafbabies growing. I pot the leafbabies when they form a mini rosette/ start growing roots. Also, keep the leaf intact and allow it to die on its own. Argh, yes! How could i forget laui- it can be such a pain! I used to grow them but slowly phased them out last year 😅
I can’t seem to keep echeveria afterglow looking beautiful. As soon as it starts looking good the pests come and attack it. 😢I’ve lost 2 of them. It keeps giving me pups and that’s the only reason I still own it.
oh my gosh, same! Mine always get attacked by aphids and when i spray there's marks on the leaves, so it never looks nice 😣

After hearing all this, I might just as well stop growing any succulents. Why not suggest the cure rather than this menacing worry?
Did you even watch the whole video? I feel like you missed the entire point. Nowhere did i say that you should stop growing all succulents or that all succulents are difficult to grow. The purpose of this video is to shine light on 15 (out of thousands) cultivars that are particularly prone to disease/ pests and help people understand why they may be having issues.
If anything, this video will help choose cultivars that are easier to care for, therefore, achieving better results and having nicer plants?
