- Before the M6 motorway there were only two major roads linking England and Scotland - the A1 and the A6.
This series of videos covers stories from one of the most hazardous roads, The A6 over Shap fell in what is now known as Cumbria.
What a great collection of stories.
I like the fact that any lady who was stranded on Shap was looked after ,
Three minutes in, that’s the V8 AEC Mandator on a “Commercial Motor” extended road test from Southall to Edinburgh and back.
I was wondering about that, tri-axle trailer was certainly unusual and it appears to be running single wheels.
I suppose coming from Shap, my ancestors wouldn't feel so overwhelmed by the Canadian winters.
You don’t see many Chinese six. Wheelers now
how did a snow plough driver get too work
When was this recorded?
One car I saw had a 1993 registration
@@devlinmaguire8074 Thanks, I did look for registration numbers but I couldn't make any out. Brilliant series of films.
I think the filming covers several dates. These days there are no snowploughs on the road, sadly. Some of the lorries are of post-1970 construction, and lorries still use this road. About the first time I drove any substantial distance on my own, summer 1977, I was crossing the railway bridge where Clifton and Lowther station used to be, when an oncoming lorry cut the corner. How he missed me, and how I did not hit the parapet, I do not know. A few years later, I drove south on the A6 on a sweltering summer's day. There was a heat haze, and there was a noticeable smell of diesel.
