Back when NSW dominated so much we played the 8th Immortal off the bench. There were talks the entire concept was dead after this game because NSW was winning too much. From 1990-2005 QLD only won 4 series. Like any series between two teams there's always periods of domination from one team. SOO results have so far always been pretty equal - eg, only once has a team won more than 3 years in a row. In the 11 QLD series wins in the last 12 years where they were supposedly so dominant, there was only one series they won 3-0. Sooner or later NSW will sweep a few series in a row and once again the concept will be dead to the Queenslanders. C'mon you Blues

Much more entertaining style of play than in 2017, it's sad to say. Some beautiful, crisp passes that you just don't see very often today...some of those passes were like the 'miracle try', admittedly not as good, but a similar style. Still love my league, but the game reached its peak in the "Winfield Cup" era.
the Fletch hand grenade celebration! Qld claim that drove them to series wins but people forget Qld theatrics in the early 80s when they won the first 5 series, not so humble then. I liked the 90s when both states were equal. We could be heading for that soon with Qld legends nearing retirement and NSW in serious need of young bloods.
They don't show enough vintage NSW highlights imo, not compared to the amount from QLD... sure QLD may have had more moments over the years but there are two sets of fans/viewers
This was the last origin for greats Brasher, Toovey, Lam, Rogers, Furner, and Hetherington. Also for Julian O’Neill and Craig Greenhill (First Origin send off).
Bryan Fletcher hand grenade! Lol good work Nsw. People saying it was a disgraceful performance, I'm from New Zealand you should try watching the warriors. Worst team ever
I remember 2005, NSW said S O O was over cause they Belted QLD 3 years in a row ..Whats the point of playing QLD they cant win a match any more .......Enter the Legacy years
@Neil Solomons oh you mean like Peter Sterling and benny alias that sort of thing ? Is that what you are talking about players that were born in the other state ? Or Ian Roberts Timanah Tahu Jammes Tamou that sort of ineligbilty josh Dugan perhaps ?Or am i missing som thing the very first was Peter Sterling then Benny Alias so i do't understand what you were saying .I agree Adrian lamb was a stretch though . Lets just hope we get to see some footy this year . NSW will go 6 in a row now i think . So QLD'ers will just have to suck it up for the next 5 years .
Not sure if your statement is true but yes we (blues) didnt have much to cheer about for a long time, i don’t believe we will ever see domination like that of qld again
A lot has been made of the Bryan Fletcher "hand grenade" incident in this game. This incident occurred as the result of the Footy Show encouraging players throughout the year (2000) to come up with some kind of celebration which they would perform when they scored a try. The show would then feature these celebrations in a segment, much to the amusement of it's gullible audience. I never liked these celebrations, and the players who performed them were posers, drawing extra attention to themselves, when Rugby League is in fact, a team sport. Inevitably, this trend found it's way to the State of Origin contest of that year. Bryan Fletcher, not content with representing NSW, or being privileged enough to score a try for his state, decides to draw extra attention to himself by performing the now infamous hand grenade. I don't think Fletcher meant it as an insult to the Qlders (I would have thought the scoreline in that game was insulting enough for them), I think he was just mindlessly following a trend, which I'm glad has now disappeared from the game.
Good post, probably puts it all in perspective. I've heard Queensland use the Bryan Fletcher try celebration video as motivation during their camps, but I'm not sure how much truth there is in it. I know after Queensland recent dominance , Brad Fittler looked into it and suggested Queensland developed a long term plan that started the year after this series loss.

I was at that game as then 16 year olds with a mate from school. Loved every minute of it.
If Joey played at Halfback that night, the score would’ve been 76-16. #justmytwocents
Especially if it had been the 2001 Joey Johns... He just seemed to get better with every year.
@JG-bw6lustop talking about that

A nice over-analysis of something that required no attention. They were winning and enjoying themselves and did something goofy. Get over it.

Disgraceful performance by NSW with those try-scoring theatrics, which inspired QLD to kick their arses in 2001. Never again will this be repeated.
After 8 series losses in a row.. I can't see too many NSW theatrics... what happened boys? Not so cocky now ??
Its called fun! 2014 Game 1 was pretty awesome!
Tony Hanrahan Come next week I hope they have plenty of spiteful theatrics in Tony Hanrahan's name!
When you get 56 points scored against you in a state of origin game you deserved to be humiliated!
NSW made QLD look second rate that night!
jono ferg did you catch game 3 this year Jono? No theatrics needed. The performance says enough.
