    This was surprisingly helpful for a video that was almost entirely out of focus.

    Very good instruction. Thank you very much for this beautiful demo. I will have to follow these for solving same issues of my Paulo Soprani accordion. A problem is there. The wind holes are very small there. I must have to be very careful on replacing the valves of inside of reeds.

    Thank you so much Tom. I have a Hohner engraved wood 21 button C-F accordion with all bad reed valves. What size of reed valve do I need to order as I see a variety, i.e. 40mm x 6.5 or 5.5 or 6.0.... Thank you and love your videos...

    Hi, I am Wanri from Indonesia, thanks for the tutorial. I have old accordion but the sound is not in the right tone, I need to change the reed valves but there is no shop in Indonesia selling that kind of materials. Need your advice whether possible sending the reed box for repairing to your country. Thank

      Hello Wanri, I don't think it would be economical to do that, due to shipping and import costs. I am also not accepting repairs at this point. Sorry for that! Tom

    Que es mejor?...la valvula de cuero o la de plastico?.
    Saludos y gracias por el video

      Hello Julio! Well, the leather ones are generally only for the larger bass reeds. They curl up over time, and need to be replaced. So I would say plastic are a little better. Cheers!

    Hey Tom,
    Great video.. I just bought a 60 years old accordion, opened it up and noticed that there are quite a few valves missing. Nowhere to be found inside the accordion. So my question is does every reed needs a leather valve?

    • @TomsMusicShop
      @TomsMusicShop  Рік тому

      Yes, every reed will need one. They are required to get the reed tongue oscillating, and they affect the tuning.

  • @joaodiasgil
    @joaodiasgil 2 роки тому

    Hello and thank you for the vídeo! Do you need to tune after replace a reed valve?

    • @TomsMusicShop
      @TomsMusicShop  2 роки тому

      Well, it will affect the tuning if the reed was previously tuned with a dying valve. But most likely it wasn't, and in that case you should be fine.

      Hey Quito, most valves are of plastic, but some larger bass valves are still leather. I order them from Hohner.

      Ahh thats difficult as I live in Australia.
      No local shops.
      We have a large leather shop not far away.
      Is it a particular kind of leather and are they specially made?

    Hey tom, love the video! I'm replacing some reed valves and the new ones are too soft and flop down is ther anything i can do to fix this, or are these just duds?

    • @TomsMusicShop
      @TomsMusicShop  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Kenneth, it’s hard to say without looking at them. Are you talking about leather valves? What are their dimensions? You may be able to use plastic valves instead, which are stiffer.

    Hi Tom, i need to replace almost all of the valves on my old hohner and i found them on ebay , but how can i know which size to take and thickness, i tried to find a chart online or something to give me a guidance but no luck, tnx.

      Oh gosh, they are really specific. I would suggest buying a variety pack from Hohner.

    Tom, do the reed blocks vibrate enough while playing that possibly a piezo contact mic could be placed on them and detect the note through the vibration of the reed(s)?

    • @TomsMusicShop
      @TomsMusicShop  2 роки тому

      Hey Chris, that’s a good question. I have seen some microphones over the years installed in the coronas, that I think were piezo microphones, but I’m not sure.

    Hey where did you get your tweezers from? I picked up a very old box that looks like it was never played but all the valves are mounted. I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it so looks like I have a fun little project on my hands now :'D
