  • Sensei Richard Poage teaching basic bunkai for Naihanchi Shodan Kata (Tekki Shodan). This clip was filmed at the Cal South International Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan Karate and Kobudo Camp. For information on seminars please email us at info@peacefulwarriorphx.com
I would like to dedicate this video to my loving girlfriend Tiffany Richards. Without her none of this would be possible.

Great video! I learned this as Tekki Shodan in Shotokan about 20 years ago but was always disappointed in the applications we were taught at the time.
I’m no longer part of any Shotokan organization, or any other formal style for that matter, but have recently been practicing and researching on my own and have been happily surprised to learn the real core of karate is actually clinch fighting, wrestling, and throws/takedowns. Really adds back a huge dimension that I previously thought was lacking in the art. Turns out, it was always there but I didn’t know how to see it before

Karate is absolutely an infighting style and I love how he explains that in this Bunkai.

Principles explained very well, including both technique applications and the different stages of a resisting opponent in partner practice/application. I didn't see in this highlights video any elements of using the stance to sink or uproot the opponent, or make contact points with their feet/legs, so wondering if you covered that. Thank you for posting, very well done and helpful.

Thank you for watching. Yes we did cover using the feet/legs to strike and root to affect the opponents balance. Excellent point. Hope to work with you soon,

Implication of oyo waza to apply hand to foot movements should include reversal application and explain how to escape.
step over to trap legs and imobilize
    change angle to unbalance opponent.

You know what would be funny while explaining all this? If Poage Sensei kiss the Uke on the cheek!
