LesleytheBirdNerd few weeks ago I found a baby robin in the middle of the road and I knew where it’s nest was but it was at the very top of this talll tree,
I know there was a nest under my neighbors porch so I put him there, it’s been a few days and I check on him a lot and when ever I come he clicks his beak, begs for food and tries to move to me. But I’m really worried since he is trying to get out of his nest early and tries to jump when he sees me. I’m worried he’s going to get out bc there are tons of cats, raccoons, chipmunks(apparently they eat baby birds 0-0) opossums and foxes, idk what to do AaaA

As a kid growing up in Iowa, I saw many great horned owls. It always happened the same way. I would hear a cacophony of angry crow calls, and inevitably there would be an owl hunkered down while a flock of crows cussed it out and dive-bombed it. Great horned owls have a reputation for being the most ferocious predators, pound for pound, of all.

I recently got back into birding. I had a great first outing adding a couple birds to my newly growing life list. Oyster catcher being my favorite spot. Purple Martin came in second. This outing was along a shore and inlet. The next week I went to some woodlands. My first spot was a Cedar Wax Wing just before entering the forest. Time to head back after two hours I neared a murder of Crows. A Great Horned Owl was cursing up a pine. After a couple minutes the Owl lighted to another tree. It had been about 30 years since seeing a Great Horned Owl. I left the woods so contented. Thanks for all your videos🪶

Finally he perched in a nearby tree, so I illuminated him again and had family come out and look. What a spectacular bird! Twice as tall as any specimen I have ever seen in a museum. I had my fun for one night, haven’t interrupted their livelihood since. Another GHO also came around. My first and only owl in the wild was a great horned back in the late 70s or very early 80s. I was walking on a dirt road in western New York State. On one side was state forest land and on the other, properties that have since been logged to death. I had an eerie feeling of being watched, and just as I turned to look, the owl glided over my head so close that I felt a slight breeze. The dirt road at that point sloped downhill, and I flattened myself to the road surface s my brain processed the fact that this was a bird, not something intent on colliding with me, lol! What a wingspan! I followed the owl to the bottom of the hill, finding him/her perched in a tree and observing me with interest. I couldn't circle the tree due to undergrowth, but as the owl tracked me, I could see that there was quite a range of motion.

Nice video. One observation I've made is that, although known for their soothing hoot call, GHOs also make a startling scream type call that sounds almost identical to that of a barn owl. I've had one land on a branch above me at night and do this scream so loudly that I reflexively jumped into my truck and shut the door real quick. Yes I did get out a flash light and see that it was a GHO and not a barn owl.

Scientists don’t know why these owls sport the tufts, but they do have a few theories. I love to watch "critter" programs and documentaries. You gave information that I do not remember ever hearing. I also like your proper grammar when you said pupils open widely instead of wide. As best I remember, Owls are not dimorphic. However, are there subtle ways to tell the male from female, and could you tell which this one was? I love how you faded out your voice when listing the foods they eat. I did not realize they could eat while flying. You did say they sometimes eat carry-on, right? Just kidding. I had a nest of GHOs this year. I saw the baby jump out of the tree and so I left it alone. Unfortunately, the coyotes got it. The pair immediately had another clutch with two babies. One stayed up in the huge pine, but the other kept jumping out of the nest (it was about ready to fly). So this time I kept putting it back up in the tree. I returned it up in a tree so many times that it or the parents got to where they didn't even mind me picking it up and placing it up on a branch. I hear them out hooting at night, I hope both babies make it this time.

Thanks, for the great documentary. It must have been the extreme cold in Canada this past winter, that brought an owl so close to you. I as well saw my first owl (Barred) this year. It was massive. The crows were making the same racket. Unfortunately, the owl attacked one of the ducks. It moved on after that. Take care!

We have a nesting pair of Great Horned Owls on our land. They have been raising their young for many seasons now.

I went outside and screamed at the bird very short bursts, mocking bird shut his yap. I think it's because he was the only thing making noise and enjoying his own voice. But I chimed in and was louder so he heeded.

I was riding my bike one afternoon when I heard these ravens yelling at something. I figured it was a hawk but when I got to where I could see the tree, I thought it was Batman up there! This owl had to have been 3 feet tall or taller and was thoroughly unimpressed by the ravens. Since then, I discovered his mates nesting tree and have been able to observe her and her chicks.....observing me as, once they lock eyes on me, they don't blink! Hard to win a staring contest with an owl .

Sometimes during the day I'll hear a bunch of birds making a racket like they were in this video but it never occurred to me they could be fussing about an owl in their midst.

Where or how do they nest or sleep? I say a family of them last year, the fledglings having flight lessons! It was the most magnificent bird sighting I’ve ever had in the wild, so I share your enthusiasm. Id like to see other Owls, but they are hard to find.

Thanks Lesley for you time, very educational, I was walking my pooch last week going down the sidewalk past my neighbors and what do I find, a rabbit head no ear, no body, I'm like hmm Owl or Hawk. I was guessing a Owl. Like yourself I've never encountered a Owl, til this day I've never seen one up close and personal, I've heard them though. It's on my bucket list :P

i found a chick when i was walking home from the bus stop when i was about 14 years old. it had fallen from its nest, because it only had downy feathers which was shocking considering how huge it was. it had a hole in the side of its head that was infected. i don't know if it was an ear or what. but i took it home and my grandmother and my sister and i fed it oatmeal out of a syringe for a couple weeks and it lived. i didn't know how to teach it how to hunt, but it became pretty dangerous for us to have in our house and it could fly, so we released it. it probably died, but maybe not.
