    Reminds me how a lot of people will book multiple dining reservations at the 6 month window and cancel the ones they do not want the night before. It is annoying as a Passholder that doesn’t plan more than a month or two out. At least we have found a lot of reservations open up in the 24 hour window after everyone cancels to not get the cancellation fee.

    This is not fair. Charge $50 to change a reservation and the $50 goes to the maintenance fee account, not Disney. The fees would help reduce costs to all the owners.

    This is one of the greatest 'Cons' of the DVC program. Sure having points to rent "at your will" is nice, but I know I want to vacation at x time, I don't want to see my 11 month window booked because of someone else walking past my reservation to get to their "desired" spot. Nor do i want to start booking my vacation 14 months out and walk it to my actual time.

    Maybe this is a good reason not to buy? What’s the point of buying if you can’t use what you’ve paid for? If you are flying in this may or may not work. It sounds less flexible than just reserving a hotel room. I have had to split my Rez with a value resort and it takes half a day to have to check out and re check in. It puts your vacation on hold while your bustle juggling.

    Airlines charge you for changing bookings and if people are not carefully Disney will see this as a way to make more money from DVC guests, as always the few will spoil it for the many. Personally I think you should be able to change a booking date once or twice per booking per 12 calendar months to ensure that where “life” gets in the way of your Disney holiday you have some flexibility.

    I have to admit this was something I was not aware of. We own at Boardwalk for the purpose of staying during Food and Wine. We book a studio and I have *never* been able to get a standard view for my desired week at 11 months. I have enough points to stay in a garden or pool view room, so that's what we do, but hearing this it does make me angry that this loophole exists. I don't think I could do this walking process - like Jackie said, there's a lot of real life issues that can come up that get in the way of going online or calling multiple times for one reservation- I work, I have a family - this is not a practical option for me. I make an appointment to be on my computer at 8 am on the 11 month window day - I don't think it's fair that because of this loophole I will constantly be shut out of the lower point rooms. I guess next year I'll try Pete's suggestion of looking backwards at 11 months and 6 or 7 days days, but again - that's another appointment I'll have to put on the calendar. Disney should close this loophole and make it fair for everyone.

  • @wakeywarrior
    @wakeywarrior 5 років тому

    Buy double the points at Saratoga or OKW and book 1 beds. You can get anywhere virtually all the time, even at 7 months. No need to waste time walking, you get a much better room with living room and kitchen and it won’t cost you much more than buying the latest resort direct. If you want a studio and can get one at 11/ 7 months, then rent the excess points to pay the dues on both the rental portion and the portion you have booked- no cost room then. Win/ win. 1 beds at DVC are the way to go. Copper Creek has shocking availability because DVC loaded so many points onto cabins for big profits, and the cabins are thus unpopular with most buyers wanting regular rooms, to ridiculously expensive cabins. Then watch out- to balance the demand they can increase the points on regular rooms shifting points from cabins to regular rooms.

    Sometimes adding on a night at a value or moderate to make vacation points and date availability works best for traveling families who can only vacation certain times a year. As a teacher, my family has to plan around my time off. If that means spending $150 at a value resort for one evening to get the week and resort I want, it’s a win for me. I don’t think it negates my purchase of DVC at all. I’ve never gotten a waitlist either, Pete!

    The problem with walking is it forces all owners to invest that time playing games if they ever want one of the more popular rooms/dates. A bump up to 1BR usually finds availability where studios had none but 1BR is also TWICE the points. I think the loophole could be closed if first they better balanced the points between Studio & 1BR and the other high/low demand categories.

    I will add another layer to the practice of "walking" a reservation. There are several DVC owners that do this at desirable (AKL and BW) resorts during popular/hard to reserve times (Food & Wine, Christmas, etc) with the intention of securing a reservation so they can rent a confirmed reservation instead of renting points. Not only is this commonly happening, they are commanding well over market value for rental points. It's very easy to see this in practice on many of the Facebook DVC rental groups. It's easy to see that with only a handful of these desirable studios available the problem gets magnified pretty quickly.
    I have never walked a reservation (or rented points, for that matter), but like others have mentioned the more people that walk reservations the more it will cause others to have to start doing it as well.

    Pete, as someone who has a company that receives perk and free comps from Disney... ethically you should be saying to people this is wrong! You know it’s wrong, it’s a loophole, etc but you have a lot of viewers who listen and when you say something is good, people say oh let’s try it because Pete said it was good. You aren’t clearly saying do NOT walk a reservation but honestly you should be outraged that people are doing this, it’s just wrong. You are right, Disney needs to fix the loophole! But maybe having a bit of an influence on the Disney fans you could say something?

  • @andrewleblanc9836

    I had never heard of this until now. I’m not a fan. It’s of course technically not cheating (and I wouldn’t go as far as to say unethical), but it’s definitely obnoxious and disruptive to everyone else trying to book a vacation
    Also I’ve had tons of success with waitlist. I think I’ve gotten it every time, most recently a weekend stay at the Polynesian with a lagoon view. I think the reason Pete may not be having success is it sounds like he does a lot of trips quickly after booking (not as far out in advance as someone who might not live in central Florida)

  • @curtisangelamay1510
    @curtisangelamay1510 5 років тому +2

    If Disney wanted to prevent this manipulation, they could require you can only "walk", after a 7 day wait past the 11 month window. Which would allow people who wanted to book that week, the same chance, without, the walker "blocking" out the res. I think this would not be great since it would remove the flexibility that DVC affords us. This would be a throwing out the baby with the bathwater scenario, since sometimes people need to move their reservation for legitimate reasons like work schedules, school events etc.
    Walkers do benefit those who want 1-3 day vacations like Pete, because they create those segments by this walking strategy.
    Clearly Disney doesn't want to do anything about this, because it's been happening for decades, and it's not a problem for them, ultimately folks fill in the gaps with split stays, or that room goes into inventory for the hotel side. The family who has been blocked out, either learns the technique themselves, or they spend more points for a higher cost room, or stay at Saratoga Springs (In no way is this a dig at SSR, just my experience when everything else isn't available, SSR is).
    It really comes down to expectations. DVC has probably sold a lot of people on the idea of Studio rooms, when it comes to total point purchase, but like Pete stated, unless you want to get into these complicated machinations, you need to accept that sometimes the room category you want will not be available, even at your home resort, OR you need enough points to book up a category. Either way, you're not ending up with exactly what you want. I have been fortunate in that we have always booked at reservation availability when the booking window opens, and have strategized arriving a few days before the mad rush of DVC reservations would come otherwise. Maybe I'm fooling myself that this is a strategy, but so far, at the 11 month window, I have had success with getting Studio rooms at high demand DVC resorts.
    I personally don't see how this is any different than when Disney offers specials on rooms, and people book up the value resorts (normal resort stay, non DVC) then other folks see the special, call up, and there is no more availability for that special at the cheaper resorts, you have to spend a lot more to get the special at a deluxe.
