    LYRICS:
Pleased to meet you, charmed, I’m sure
Hope your thoughts aren’t too impure
You don’t know me, but you surely will
I’m the snake who tempted Eve,
And I’ve got mischief up my sleeve,
    And minor inconveniences that kill…
I’ll stall your wi-fi, give you ticks,
Or make you step on lego bricks
I even made the damn M-25!
    But true evil’s gotten tired…
    And I’m feeling uninspired…
    I’m immortal, but that doesn’t mean alive…
What’s the point of it all?
I didn’t even meant to fall
As much as I just sauntered vaguely downward
I once believed in starry skies
But now it all evades my eyes
How quickly God’s opinion of me soured!
All I did was ask some questions, just a couple of suggestions
    What could possibly go wrong?
Next thing I’m being thrown into a pool of boiling sulfur
And now I’m pouring out my heart in song- (cringing at the realization) oh, God!
*spoken* Did I just say “oh, God?!” What the heaven’s wrong with me?!
Hell’s got no ideas, and heaven’s got no taste!
You couldn’t ask for two more boring, idiotic realms
Make a world just to destroy it, now come on, that’s just a waste!
Besides, all the really evil stuff,
    the humans do themselves!
Six thousand years of the same pathetic story
You’d think my life was hellish but it’s more like purgatory
And every day a certain fear of mine begins to worsen,
What if deep down I’ve always been a bit of a…(cringing) nice person?!
    Oh, WHO AM I KIDDING?!
Nice- NICE?! I’m a demon, I’m not NICE!!!
Nice is a four letter word…
I’m on my OWN SIDE, I don’t need anyone!
Just try and make me repent for my sins!
You weren’t made for peace and love and light,
You’re blood and fire and torment!
    You’ve been slacking lately,
Go eat babies or burn down a convent!
I’m the stuff of nightmares, I’m not meant to have dreams!
So why do I get no enjoyment from the sound of screams?!
Forged out of ashes and snakeskin and stardust,
    Fearfully, woefully, wretchedly made
I carved myself only in my own image,
From heaven’s and hell’s beaten paths I’ve strayed
I don’t want praise, or pity, just answers!
But GOD doesn’t have them, they just sit there on high
Making all of creation question their judgment
Like some great big emotional abuser in the sky!!!
How much more of this am I meant to take!?
For heavens, for Satan’s, for somebody’s sake?!
    GOD, ARE YOU LISTENING?!
SHOW ME A GREAT BLASTED PLAN!!!
But perhaps that plan came in the form of shelter
Under the wing of a pair of pale blue eyes
And a soul doomed to fall evermore into the abyss
    Now flies…
I may be the demon, but you’re the one who’s tempted me
With your smile and your style and your faith and your joy
    And your humanity
Just enough of a bastard to be worth knowing,
And yet somehow the purest soul I’ve met
In you I can see everything that I’m not
And all that I could be
    I thought hope was foolish,
    Thought trust was naive,
But I’ve finally found something in which to believe
    (With a simmering, sinful passion)
I watch you with hunger ablaze in my eyes,
My blackened heart burns at the sound of your sighs,
The things I would do to be graced by your glance,
I’d make you my altar if I had the chance…
Run away with me, I’ll take you anywhere you want to go!
We won’t need heaven, or hell, just us
    We could be an us…
So they’ve asked you back to heaven…
You say we can both be angels…
    Just like old times…
And you told them just where they could stick it… right?
(With a sense of denial and dawning horror)
    Tell me you said no…
    Tell me you said no…
We’re better than that! YOU’RE better than that!
The whole system’s fucked and you know that’s a fact
They’ll never want me, they’ve never liked you
They’ll never l- (quickly stopping himself from saying “love”)
KNOW you the way that I do
Well of course I said no to hell, we’re the bad guys!
    Isn’t that what you think?
But heaven’s no better, I’ve seen their design,
And what they’ll do to those who won’t toe the damn line,
    (Seething in ⅞)
    I thought you were different
I thought you were the piece that fits me
    But you’re just like everyone
Else who thinks they can fix me!
    I don’t belong anywhere
Not above or below, and you don’t even care!
One you asked if I was lonely, being on my own side,
Well, if I said it wasn’t,
    I’M A DEMON! I LIED!
(Exhausted and aching, on the verge of tears)
    The nightingale stopped singing
Now all that’s left’s a ringing in my
    Ear, ‘cause you’re not here
The sky could fall, the world could end
They’re nothing without my best friend
Who made it all so precious and so dear
    (
You “forgive” me? Well DON’T BOTHER!
It’s clear that you would rather be where
You were told to “shut your mouth and die!”
    My angel, farewell
I’m condemned to something worse than hell
Trapped in the seventh circle of goodbye

OH MY GODS THIS IS AMAZING! THIS IS GORGEOUS! THIS IS SPECTACULAR! THIS IS DIVINE!
The instrumentation, the vocals, the lyricism…Everything about this is JUST. EXTRAORDINARY.
2:08 “You’d think my life was Hellish, but it’s…more like Purgatory” two minutes in and we already have poetry…
2:53 “I’m the stuff of nightmares, I’m not meant to have dreams!” this one HURTS…(and is quite reminiscent of a quote from The Sandman!)
3:34 your voice is gorgeous!! And the descending piano notes…
4:17 leitmotif spotted! This part is so tender…
5:22 “The things I would do to be graced by your glance / I’d make you my alter if I had the chance” this line is utterly profound…
6:09 this entire segment gave me chills. Excellent use of tacet (I do hope I am using that term correctly!)
6:43 the sheer, insurmountable grief/agony that is present in Crowley’s voice here is just….it is truly devastating to listen to…
      - “I thought you weere different / I thought you were the piece that fits me” my heart…
7:46 the building tension, the crescendo…
8:05 I can imagine Crowley sitting alone in the dark, softly singing this part to himself under his breath, glasses removed, eyes welling up with tears…
      8:27 another leitmotif…a heartbreaking ending.

This song completely blew me away…You are so incredibly talented and you should be so very proud of this absolute masterpiece! I can guarantee that in a few years time, this is sure to become a staple of the fandom. Astounding work!

You’re a phenomenal singer as well as an amazing lyricist, this song was so beautifully canon, and I was doing fine for half of the song, but the second Aziraphale was properly mentioned I had to bite my lip to keep from crying, you have so much skill and you deserve all the praise and awards, you’ve more than earned a new subscriber 💕

as someone who has been doing music performance for... my whole life i have a few things to say :)) the orchestrations and lyrics are fantastic!! Your singing perfectly conveys crowley's emotions throughout the entire story of good omens, and honestly, i would love to see this performed by a broadway performer, that would be so cool and you deserve so much credit and praise😭
i specifically love how he goes from a soft love like at the end of season one, to a more posessive, intense, almost-lust?-for-power-filled season 2 crowley, to the seething anger of the 7/8.
I love 7/8. it's my favorite time signature!

The lyrics are mindblowing, the instrument arrangements accentuate the all too familiar Crowley moods but your voice carries it all. Until I could devote my full attention to this lament, I waited to listen. What happened during and after listening astonished me, or as Crowley said on numerous occasions, 'you amaze/d me' even though I expected nothing less.
Then, after that, I had to sleep on it until later the next day, today.
After reading the lyrics (many of which, while listening had stuck out as some of my favorite text from the show/book), all I could do was literally go to bed.
Immediately after listening and even today, I've so badly wanted to relisten. However, I realize that I can't just yet. First, I have to fully absorb what happened to me upon first listening before delving deeper.
If I feel this way after one hearing, I can not begin to imagine how you feel, having conceived, composed, performed it, and set your precious content free to go off into the world.
Comments that I've read have beautifully and rightly praised every element from the incredibly beautiful and clever thumbnail (which represents how waiting for season three feels for me and I imagine for many of us and, I might add the perfect Crowley font), to your compositional, vocal, dramatic and performative skills, to your commitment to every detail heard, seen, and unseen.
However, I want to comment on something so overwhelmingly beautiful yet subtle that so far, no comment I've read yet remarked on. The fluctuations in tempo and mood are framed by some of the most exquisite stops & silences that I've ever experienced. Only the most mature or most gifted musicians are even aware of, know how to employ or know that rests, when employed with purpose, can speak, ring or resonate louder than words or music ever can. Most see rests in musical notation as something to count through or wait on until the action begins again. In your skillful hands, they stand out in my mind's ear, like sparkling diamonds or moonlight shimmering on water.
As social media is a living breathing entity of itself, may 'Crowley's Lament', like your clip on DT's BAFTA photo shoot reach the upper echelons bringing you and your plethora of talents the recognition you so rightfully deserve and have earned.
'Am excited to see/ hear what next you have up your sleeve. Yours is an exciting life, and you are truly making the most out of it.
    Bravi, my phenomenal fellow!
🎊 Congratulations and much good luck to you! 🎊
PS: If you will allow me, I would like to add that your use of Sprechstimme, belting, chest, mixed, and head voices is truly remarkable, and I applaud you.
As a retired voice teacher/coach/instructor, I would like to offer some unsolicited suggestions, especially bc I watched the video you made after a full day of recording and heard how understandably exhausted (i.e.: a bit hoarse) your voice was. So listening and hearing how beautiful your final cut is is impressive, to be sure.
However, here is a word of caution: If you bleed/press/drive your emotions onto your vocal instrument vs. allowing your emotions to flow through your vocal instrument, you may run into vocal trouble, which could impede your inevitable projection into the world at large (I speak from my own personal experience as a singer as well as teacher).
In other words, try to avoid literally crying yourself (especially when singing). Let us cry (which we did) from your brilliance of sound and commitment to your feelings and content. In so doing, your gorgeous voice will have more time & room in which to bloom, resonate, and ring.

    • @laurenrogers
      @laurenrogers  5 місяців тому

Thank you so much for this incredibly detailed comment! The sprechstimme mention in particular made my music major heart happy. I will say that I was NOT actually crying during the recording of this song, although the fact that it apparently convincingly sounded like I was did flatter me. This is definitely the most vocally taxing thing I've ever done, I don't usually put this much stress on my voice, but the combination of singing in a register much lower than my typical lyric soprano while also doing a character voice made this a pretty monumental vocal endeavor that I had to prepare for for months to execute. I don't plan on singing this again any time soon- hopefully I can find a male vocalist who can sing it in a slightly more comfortable way! I have some ideas :)

    • @yubantwo2086
      @yubantwo2086 5 місяців тому +1

@@laurenrogersI'm grateful and relieved that you received my comment in the spirit that I'd written it and hoped that you would.
In reality, I didn't think you were actually boo hooing with tears and all but that your emotions sounded very raw and driven into your chords ( vocal folds to be 💯 correct) in places.
It would be a shame for anyone else to sing it, except for perhaps... the Tennant himself (although perhaps he'd have to lean into a lot more Sprechstimme to do some of it).
I'm convinced that you have the chops to sing those low notes. It's about relaxing into them and allowing the notes to ring or rumble vs. thinking of them as "low" (rather like on the piano: they're just left of your center).
I sang both Wagner's Venus (Paris version - the longer version) in Tannhäuser and Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos in the same 3 seasons. Ariane is actually lower than Venus although Venus is a zwischen Fach and more often sung by mezzos. Ariadne calls for a spinto soprano who has to have rock solid low notes and extreme high notes and holding steady in the middle when singing with the tenor. Or Vitellia, dramatic coloratura in Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito is lower than Sesto the mezzo role in the same opera. It's about approach and how long sound has to be sustained in which tesatura.
I finally mastered how to belt & sing in the mixed and low on stage (because otherwise the orchestra swallowed my sound completely in those ranges)
In any case, you are a marvel, your future is bright.... and I'm here for it!
PS: Lucky you(!) that you get to watch David collect the Olivier tonight!

Hooooooly shit. I felt so much… emotion. It’s.. woah. Ok
    1. The lyrics and the vocals and music and overall the way it’s done is unbelievable. I’m a huge fan of theatre and this was truly incredible, Broadway-level delivery. Your voice is amazing, not only is it just beautiful but I truly felt the emotion in this on a personal level. Also the lyrics are absolutely genius.
    2. I personally have a veery deep connection to this story, I’ve been in the fandom since 2019 and when season 2 ended.. well to say I was broken would be an understatement. I felt.. shattered. Honestly, still don’t think we needed s2 at all, but everyone has different opinons on that. Interesting thing is how deeply I felt this song. Lil story: When s2 came out I didn’t have the opportunity to watch it right away, so I asked my friend to give me bullet points. Well she sent me the kiss scene. I so happen to be neurodivergent and extremely empathetic with a bit of an unhealthy attachment to these characters so I had a full blown meltdown mixed with a panic attack due to realisation that I’ll have to also watch this later with my homophobic parents bc they’re fans of the book (we ended up not watching it) so yeah, that was fun. And listening to this made me literally sit down on the floor from the overwhelming feelings I got(in like a good way, I’m fine I promise) so yeah, I thought I’d let u know that ur work is greatly appreciated despite having so little likes.

This was absolutely amazing. I'm not into opera, but this was beautifully done. I could just imagine Crowley on stage singing his heart out and Aziraphale being the only one in the audience listening intently

I don't understand people who don't like musicals. (referring to another commenter) But whatever. This is beyond fantastic. (Apparently there have been people who have attempted to stage a Good Omens musical. I've seen bits of it on UA-cam. Wish they'd had you. Who knows where it could have gone?) I definitely will be looking out for you, whatever you do as a performer and composer.

Absolutely IN AWE from this piece, having come back to listen to it a second time. Rock opera suits our wily snake, and using the lower part of your vocal range was an excellent choice! All the references in the lyrics and the instrumentation... BUT THE EMOTIONS, GOSH DARN IT THE EMOTIONS! So raw and pure, and I can visualize Crowley's subtle facial expressions changing in every line.
From one composer to another, I may officially need to hang my hat on the metaphorical coat hanger. (Obviously Im not going to quit composing, but the sentiment is still there haha)
