    Thanks for this post.
I had no idea that it was birthed as a commission for a play. I always thought the title was so apt and intriguing - l now understand why.
Ralph is so surely one of the most underrated composer/musician/instumentalist's of our time.
By way of example, the composer of this melancholy, perfectly formed piece of musical impressionism is also the author of 'Chelsea Courtyard' from 'Solo Concert' and 'The Pendant' from 'Time Line'. Two fascinating and highly unusual compositions for guitar. Not to mention everything in between.
Ralph's oeuvre is truly amazing and a true source of joy and inspiration for me and has been for over forty years.

Seguo ralph da sempre , ho mangiato alla sua tavola . Mi addolora scoprire solo ora che questo, uno dei suoi brani piu belli , prende forte spunto da Rameau, la parte portante che lo caratterizza e senza dubbio copiata.

Does anyone know for which Shakespeare play this piece was written? I found a reference to The Tempest elsewhere, but Miranda and Ferdinand fall in love immediately in that one. I also saw that he wrote incidental music for a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, but that doesn't seem to quite fit the title either.

Hi Marjorie ! I do not know which specific theater piece, but I know that he never got paid for it (Ralph told me once when we talked a little bit after one of his concerts)

@@ArielAr Thanks so much for your reply! That is terrible that he never got paid :-( , but it's such a wonderful piece. I just have trouble wrapping my head around the title, lol, so was looking for some insight.

By the way, in this article : ecmreviews.com/tag/ralph-towner/ you can read " “Always By Your Side” takes direct inspiration from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, for a production of which Towner once wrote it as incidental music-although, as he recalls, it feels more like Broadway than Elizabethan theatre.". So it seems than more than one piece by Ralph has inspiration in a Shakespeare theater play.
