I agree with niko I think that the original DS1 sounds thin and the Keeley mod makes it sound so much more full.
Been using the ds-1 unmodded since 1980. Boost it with a sd-1, boss eq and dunlop original crybaby, that's all you need for anything from classic to metal... Guess I'm old school. Play through Marshall half stack, Marshall 100 watt head, all my board has ever been is : boss metal zone, ds-1 sd-1, boss eq and dunlop original crybaby. Play everything from sabbath, zep, Aerosmith, gnr, metallica, pantera, lamb of god with that set up...
I love my stock ds1 in my Marshall DSL combo it sounds great, I think because the ds1 is a cost effective pedal most people think it's crap but Joe Satriani used one for years I might sill for all I know
The stock DS-1 sounds a lot better in this video than I've heard it anywhere else. Those Dr Z amps make a real difference :P
All our ears are different. When I hear these two compared, the Ultra sounds like it has a blanket over the amp in comparison. But I like a bit brighter sound to cut through.
Original sounds better in a live mix. Those who can't get a good sound out of it probably scoop their mids because they think it sounds cool
I would love to know what the clean tone was so I an get a better frame of reference.
I have to agree with those below. I kinda like the original better. It just sounds like the modified one lost something?
I think you could get keely sound with stock pedal if amp controls set different
I have the boss ds1 and i never really turn the distortion up I just use it as a boost to give me a nice crunchy blues tone I normally keep the drive all the way down and the volume 50-75% of the way up and the tone at 50% and I was wondering would the ds1 sound good with a compressor pedal?
I think if you need to mod it, you may have been better off buying a different distortion/OD pedal.
Here's the thing: if I'm using a dirt pedal, I DON'T want it to sound amp-like, as to me that defeats the purpose. I want to get a different sound than I could otherwise get, ergo I prefer the stock DS-1
I've got a little 75 watt Fender Frontman, would the stock DS-1 sound decent through that, or would the Keeley mod be necessary?
Hey Max! It's less a matter of what's necessary and more an issue of preference. Try out both and see which you like better! :)
You've got to ask yourself what the bass response is like. My Marshall is a dark amp, a Keeley ds-1 isn't useable for me. On a Peavey classic, it does work
The stock DS1 sounds like a mosquito. The keeley mod make it more tube tone. Id like to check the dynamics of the modded pedal.
The stock pedal sounds warmer, crunchier, more focussed and more class Marshall to me. The mods sounds fuller, bassier, a bit scooped, more like a more modern Marshall. So the mods aren't an improvement for me, just a different style. I don't think there is much room for improvement in the DS-1.
Ohthepain Totally the opposite.Look again i think you have it mixed up which one is which.
I use a DS 1 and have for years have 3 and never had to use and back up. The same one for years. I think the mod really doesn't sound that great. I like Roberts stuff but it is hard to beat the regular DS 1 tone.
Why can't I get that sound out of my Crate G212 combo amp with this pedal
Good question! Generally speaking solid-state amps (which I believe your crate is) and tube amps interact with pedals very differently. You might try your pedal/guitar rig with a tube amp to see if that gets you closer to the tone you're after. Thanks!
I can create this exact same sound and better with a DigiTech gnx 4 using the D's 1 model and a different amp models combined together.
Why do you have the tone at noon on the original?!It sounds horrible there!Set it at 9-10 a clock max and it will sound a lot closer to the Keeley.
Stock DS-1 all the way.
what brand guitar is that?
+Beef Hey! It's a Collings guitar, one of our favorites here at the store. They make fantastic acoustics as well, but here is our Collings electric guitar page: massstreetmusic.com/collections/electric-guitars/collings
Rock Chalk
Definitely needs a noise gate
I think the Keeley sounds less fizzy and more amp-like, more natural growling midrange and overall more musical. I got myself the Keeley DS-1!
