@laurelsheart, that's the first comparison I thought of when I saw this. The provenance claimed for the school teacher photo is certainly plausible. To my eye, this looks very much like the same young man. I think this is genuine and it reinforces the likelihood that the teacher's photo is also the real thing. Not sure why that one is so rarely talked about, to be honest.
@@danielvandenbroek2275 It's in a private collection. A copy is on display at the BTK Museum in Fort Sumner, with a letter giving the provenance claimed. It is said to have been passed down through the family of a school teacher from Silver City who had young Henry McCarty as a student. The story is that he had a crush on the teacher and gave her the tintype photo. It's plausible, not necessarily proof. But to my eye it looks to be the same young man as in the photo James presents here. Just my opinion. I've not seen it online, but I have a photo I took of the copy at the museum. He is standing with a long gun (perhaps a prop) and is well dressed. The young man is a bit younger than this new one, but I think it is now worth a deeper look, given the likeness.
I've watched it a couple times now and I'm still dumbfounded. The resemblance is haunting. The documentation envelop seems too good to be true, but if the Coalition is throwing its weight behind this find, then it deserves serious consideration. Congrats, James. Absolutely stunning.

From statements by fellow children in Silver City to fellow Regulators in Lincoln, it is quite possible- likely in my personal opinion- that Billy was born no earlier than 1860. Could even be 1861. If the former, he may well have been short of his 21st birthday at his July 14, 1881 death. That makes him 14-15 in the year 1875, and he is always described as looking very young. Let's say that's him. Can any of the other pictures allegedly portraying the kid be confirmed? Does any of them bear resemblance to the guy in this picture?
I'd say that this is the most important moment for this channel to date. Regardless of the absolute proof of provenance and authentication effort to be done still, this is without a doubt the most compelling "Billy" picture to come to light, and by the longest of long shots. No other is close. The picture aside, think of the effort it would take to have "faked" the envelope, or the faded Silver City photographer's info on the card opposite in the case. I'm seeing that as a solid element pushing towards authenticity. Sorry that this had to be pushed out before it was ideally ready, but I have faith that you guys will get that job done, one way or the other.

There is, I believe, a very real possibility that the viewer could be unconsciously influenced by the photo's background information. I am neither implying nor accusing anyone of deceitful intentions here; rather, I'm merely suggesting that this well-known phenomenon is an element to consider when forming an educated opinion. Personally, I find the photo in question no more intriguing than some of the others claiming to be Billy the Kid. Unlike several of the comments I've read here, I see a big difference between the thick eyebrows seen in the well-known tintype and the well-groomed (thinning as they arch toward the cheekbones) eyebrows witnessed in this video. I'm hopeful that the question of authenticity will be answered sooner than later.
Very moving video, James. This photo is remarkable. What came to my mind when you finally revealed the photo was the only other photo we've known to represent the Kid, taken at Fort Sumner. Two very different portraits: The one you've shown here from Silver City is of a young man who was raised as best as could be by his mother. A face of promise, hope, and a future. Looking at the Fort Sumner photo, we see that the young face has become more rugged. A man who has seen so much violence. Finally, I'd like to add this very succinct seven-minute video was incredibly moving by all of us who continue to follow the stories of the Kid. Thank you!
I was sceptical right up until I saw the image and within seconds was convinced it’s him. It’s so clearly the same person in the tintype. Such a huge breakthrough and this needs to be handled with care in proving it to the world.
More than this, young Henry’s property of a coin and a dollar, 1 year after his mom died. Had to make decisions, had to survive in rough times. So much to the making of this Kid.
I have no doubt thats the same person in the tintype of Billy! Same eyes, nose, eyebrows, chin, bottom lip and jaw line... and strangely sloped shoulders!
That hope that we’ve all had, that somewhere there existed another photo of him with provenance, finally shows promise. This gets me excited and my imagination running full speed. I’ve often wondered if there may be a photo of him while jailed in Mesilla for his trial and this certainly leaves hope. I’m looking forward to seeing more research and maybe opinions from Ben and Josh as well. Awesome!
This is better than any other claims , and looks more like Billy , it’s hard to see on the mouth because one pic being slightly open and one closed it looks totally differnt . But I think the features all match. Specially the eyebrows
This kind of a "feather" is unfortunate and not what we wanted at this time, sadly. What we wanted was to do justice to this photo by presenting it to the public with the research it deserves behind it. We were saddened by the turn of events that forced our hand to go ahead and publish this while we are still in the process of vetting it. But, on a positive note, perhaps opening up the issue to everyone will expand our knowledge base and resources. We all get to find out if this is legit together.
We will take any route the owner of the photo wants to take regarding the authentication of the photo. We just want to do justice to real history. TV shows aren't really on our radar.
Hmm, that is very interesting. Even a very slight protrusion of the upper lip from the front teeth. Proportions of the facial features look like he could have matured into the Billy of the famous tintype. BTW, Billy's shoulders aren't quite as sloped as they appear in the tintype. Stand in front of a mirror completely relaxed and look at your shoulder slope, width, and hips. Memorize their width and slope. Now, look at Billy's feet in the tintype and place your feet identically to his. Bend your left knee slightly and lean forward on a rifle with your left hand (or a broom if you don't have a rifle). Now put your right forearm all the way back behind your holster. Look at your sloped right shoulder and protruding right hip. For further proof, mirror the right side (Billy's left - rifle side) of the tintype mapped over to the left half of the tin type (Billy's right - holster side) and Billy's shoulders are square and proportional for a wiry 5 foot 6, 130 lb outlaw wearing cold weather layered pants. I hope some of you try standing in the exact pose. The actor in The Kid (2019) had the stance almost correct, except for the foot placement and weight distribution with the left knee slightly bent and right hip kicked out a bit. Dane DeHaan played Billy very close to what I think it he was like - charming, loyal, extremely dangerous when cornered.
Djeez! Seen a lot of acclaimed Billy photographs, but i got the shivers this time... The only thing that seems odd to me, is the logo and font on the envelope. Doesn't look like 1875, but hey... Who am i! But the photo got me thrilled! Damn!
your delivery of these videos brings a gravity wholly apposite to the occasion, while not overbearing. good stuff :) this certainly looks like the (supposed) photo of him said to have been taken after the funeral of john tunstall, where he is wearing the black frock coat that garrett said he used to wear. standing along with brewer, sally chisum, susan mcsween, juan patron et al... aylmer houston carson
It’s two faces put together . Even the clothes are off and he has a double chin with bumps at the chin . His shoulders look 3 inches wide and were are the buttons that should be center were are they at . It’s almost as if he has a towel over the front and the black square around neck . What’s that supposed to be . Also this man can grow a beard .😮
I think this is going to start a whole new obsession for what us and what us not a legitimate photo of Billy the Kid. The reason I say that is in this picture Billy looks a lot more like the guy in some of the alleged photos than he does in the authenticated tintype of Billy.
Lol cardigan kid james ty woooohooooo.....grgrand and grand....family resemblance.... some called Billie we called Bonnie... wish gale get off high horse of done and continue doing forensics

Absolutely brilliant
Holy cow!!! This is a big deal! Yall keep on going. Thanks for all the hard work
Wow this is amazing! I hope you get a nat geo show on this to help with more research resources and technology.
Excellent info, Paul. Thanks for that.
@@chasingbilly You're welcome. Josh - I emailed you a few photos to make it easier to visualize what I'm talking about.
That's so exciting!!! I really hope that this is the real deal!! Great work 😃
Djeez! Seen a lot of acclaimed Billy photographs, but i got the shivers this time... The only thing that seems odd to me, is the logo and font on the envelope. Doesn't look like 1875, but hey... Who am i! But the photo got me thrilled! Damn!
your delivery of these videos brings a gravity wholly apposite to the occasion, while not overbearing. good stuff :)
this certainly looks like the (supposed) photo of him said to have been taken after the funeral of john tunstall, where he is wearing the black frock coat that garrett said he used to wear. standing along with brewer, sally chisum, susan mcsween, juan patron et al...

Thanks so much for ypur support!
Tremendous!
That looks like a newer style of writing . Like what I was taught in the 1970s .
Looks legit……fantastic find …….
If all this is real, it's definitely him. I just hope it's not faked.
I think this is going to start a whole new obsession for what us and what us not a legitimate photo of Billy the Kid. The reason I say that is in this picture Billy looks a lot more like the guy in some of the alleged photos than he does in the authenticated tintype of Billy.
It will certainly be fun to look at all the other contenders in light of this new photo.
Lol cardigan kid james ty woooohooooo.....grgrand and grand....family resemblance.... some called Billie we called Bonnie... wish gale get off high horse of done and continue doing forensics

That's right misty
Out of all the (this is Billy the Kid ) photos I’ve ever seen, this photo sure looks like a young Billy the Kid in my humble opinion!!
