Physicality is not about size, its about attitude. Our packs are often outsized in weight, but they still call us the more physical. South africans have pitbull mentality, we don't shy away from the fight.

I 100% agree. I keep hearing about these massive South African players, yet every time I watch them they look smaller. Props fairly evenly sized, often smaller locks and loosies, much smaller backline.
It's the attitude of not allowing yourself to let your team down. There's a lot of dirty play that needs to get routed out (stormers reserve lock in the semi for instance), but overall I do love the gladiatorial nature of SA rugby. It makes me not miss playing it🤣

They kicked more than any other side and trusted their D. Ireland and France attack as well as anyone at the moment. Ireland for example scored 24 tries in the six nations, almost 5tries per game. As the kiwi sides are realizing... playing SA teams prepares you for the physical battle, and sharpens you like nothing else.
Where SA teams are failing to evolve is that they struggle to put teams away when they are physically dominant, allowing teams to hang in there, and too often win games that they should not have had a chance in.

      @@markbrown-sb2zm I disagree.
The current setup suits are really well.
With our bok players so widely spread out among teams across Europe, they interact with different styles of coaching and players. It gives us the variation we need.
SA will always bring physicality to the table, that’s a guarantee. It’s the other skill sets that needs development. If all our bok players played for say the Bulls, the national team would become too one dimensional. This was quite evident during the Bulls’ glory days. They had 10-15 bok players in the team just like Leinster’s team is full of Irish players, and it was great as a bulls fan, because we dominated Super Rugby. But in the long term it effected the Boks. We won the World Cup in 07 and had that magnificent year in 09, but after that, we fell off the bus. Had a 30 percent winning percentage in 2010, had a poor World Cup in 2011, and the rest after that is history.
The current system, which is there by design imo at the hands of Rassie since 2018, will benefit us massively in the long run.

Sorry, Ross Byrne imo has not developed enough as an outhalf to merit being the starting #10 at Leinster. This was a carbon copy of his performance against La Rochelle in last year's European Cup semi-final - a demonstration in high pressure games that his thinking is too one dimensional. Contrast his 65 minutes yesterday with that of Sexton's 15 minutes - when did Leinster look most likely to score in that 2nd half? When Sexton put the Bulls rush defense back on their heels with deft kicking. Anyone can look good when an opponent is being hammered (eg Glasgow last week) but, when it's a tight high pressure contest then we see who has the tactical brain. Leo Cullen, Stuart Lancaster and, Andy Farrell are all having to face this reality for the Province and National Squad.

Of course we shouldn’t give too much weight to one game, Leinster put a lot of work and resources into the champions cup, Bulls less, but it also showed that Ireland, even though they do great, still have a long way to go.
Leinster is 3/4 of the Irish national team, most of the best Irish players play for Ireland, even their bench is (almost) full of important Irish internationals. But still they lose to the bulls, even with some of their best players out. Only 2 players in the Bulls 23 were part of the World Cup squad, only one made the 23 regularly and played in the final.
The Irish do not come close to the Saffas in terms of depth, not yet.

La Rochelle bossed the scrum. The bulls bossed the line out. There is no plan for that other than to improve your set piece. You can’t win if you are losing those set pieces at crucial moments. They are releasing quite a few players this summer I notice. They must be confident in the players that are coming through I can only assume.
Not playing Keenan and Sexton was a bit weird. O’Loughlin is one of those on his way and oddly started. Larmour at FB would have been much more interesting to see. O’Brien wasn’t that great under the high ball himself so there was nothing to lose there. Other than that what did anyone expect from the SA teams? Of course they were going to be top notch. Why should we not say this was for the thousands time that three UK officials conspired to corruptly cheat a team. Again we are so annoyed at UK rugby officials cheating a SA, Italian, French or Southern Hemisphere team.
Mike Adamson also did not for dirty play give Madigan a card for falling with his knees on Gallant after his winning try. Whether the conversion was over or not it should have been a penalty to the Stormers on the half-way-line. If the conversion missed a successful kick could then also prevented extra time. A card for Madigan would in extra time left Ulster with 14 men on the field. Adamson did not round off the game properly according to the rules !

Win win for me it means Ireland are behind us in terms of test match level rugby. What I don't like is Irish people thinking Leinster will run over our teams. Besides the quality of NZ and Australian teams in Super Rugby are better. This Leinster team got annihilated by NZ in the world cup as well so in terms of test match level rugby SA teams got the edge. Worries me that we just overpower these Irish and Welsh teams and this was apparently the best they can offer in Leinster. The Bulls probably loses by 20 in Christchurch against the Crusaders. That worries me

Because the NZ teams always get home playoffs. When the chiefs came to Pretoria for a final they were annihilated. Same now if the crusaders came to Pretoria or cape Town for a knock out they'd lose. Travel is a big factor when you cross timezones.
Watching SR now I can see how soft the breakdowns ans set pieces are compared to urc, that's why the sa teams struggled at first. I think Ireland will do pretty well in nz this year.

    • @slau330
      @slau330 2 роки тому

@@MetYsJa your argument is flawed. Since the inception of the conference system in Super Rugby teams from South Africa, NZ and Australia were guaranteed a playoff spot. The Lions did well to make 3 finals in a row but were dominated by superior Kiwi teams in the Hurricanes and Crusaders. Lions even lost a home final too

No doubt the SA teams are quality but I suspect they have probably benefited a bit from only needing to focus on one competition this year. Competition in two competitions next year is going to be a totally different kettle of fish.

This is a strawman that simply doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Leinster rested all their big players for most of the URC season. They were likely more well rested than SA team's players.

Only comment that is the blatant truth. 1 season in URC, and 2 SA teams makes the finals. 1996 Super12 started. 2007 SR14, first time two SA teams makes the final...that's 10 years. Next time was 2010. 14 teams in that competition, and every weekend was a stacked match day. Still the best rugby club competition ever created. Spoiled and ruined by greedy men that run the administration of the game in the south. SR14 was the perfect formulae for growing the game here. SR12 limited the growth but increased the competition difficulty. There was no need to grow the amount of teams to 16-18 and adding a conference system. Sucks that SA is playing North. Fact remains, SA rugby and NZ rugby has always been best when they competed against each other every weekend. NZ learned to hone their physically approach and set piece every weekend, and SA rugby learned to play more expansive rugby at the right time. Boks and ABs are world leaders in rugby due to them playing each other. Alistair Coetzee era hurt Bok rugby and many kiwi's wanted the stronger Boks back, the ABs needed it
