Rest in Peace, Amy Winehouse, it's been 13 years this month since we lost her. She would be 40 if she were still alive, and could have accomplished even more successes.
Woulda, shoulda, coulda. Amy Winehouse's entire body of music barely encompasses 2.5 hours. Hardly enough for a concert, not that she could get through one. She's not even a footnote in music. She traded her career for the needle and the bottle. Ironic her biggest hit was Rehab considering it was her addiction that killed her. Unsurprising though.
Talents, all of them... but with the possible exception of Stevie Wonder, not necessarily distinctive. Whitney and The Chairman in particular were standout talents -- but their actual voices weren't exceptionally distinctive. They just made the best of their fairly normal voices. As for John... both of his kids (Julian, Sean) sound an awful lot like him.
Really? Freddie Mercury #17? Mercury had one of the most distinctive voices in all music. You knew when it was Freddie singing. Watch the tribute concert and see how many other stars could do his songs. Robert plant's performance was sad. Sure these vocalists are good in there own right, but Mercury should be in the top 5 unique voices.
There's a few male opera singers that can out do Tiny Tim. They can sing in a pitch that normally is done by females. I forgot their name but they could be considered the modern castrato.
Meat Loaf, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Tyler, Morrissey and Chris de Burgh are more deserving of places on this list than some of the people listed here
If your looking for the most unique voices, or voices that you recognize immediately then hear we go - - Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Minnie Ripperton, Ann Wilson, Karen Carpenter, Adele, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Seal, Jenifer Warens, Whitney Houston, Chris Issac, Meria Carry, Steve Perry, or Tracy Chapman.
Shout Outs to Geddy Lee, James Hetfield, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, Jeff Buckley, Billy Corgan, Chino Moreno, Maynard James Keenan, Jonathan Davis, Lzzy Hale, Amy Lee, and Chester Bennington. Regardless of popular opinion, there is no denying the impact these musicians have on music today if not for a lot of them, there wouldn't be half the standout artists we know now.
Obviously my opinion here but strictly on uniqueness... Honorable Mentions: Amy Lee - Evanescence Miles Kennedy - Alter Bridge/Slash Reba McEntire Layne Staley - Alice In Chains Dolores O'Riordan - The Cranberries Bruce Dickerson - Iron Maiden Geoff Tate - Queensryche
Brendon Urie comes pretty darn close. I've even watched videos where both of thier vocal ranges were compared and Brendon (on record) can hit more notes than Freddie. I'm not discrediting Freddie at though as Queen is one of my favorite bands.
It's criminal to make a video such as this, and leave Mike Patton completely out of it, considering he possesses an astounding and impressive range of SIX full octaves. Let that sink in...
*Top 20 Unique Voices in BIG Music* There's plenty of artists that deserve to be on this list but the most mainstream artists have too much favoritism among an outdated generation that run massive companies like Watchmojo.
Good list, and it'd be impossible to name all the distinct voices, but I'd like to shoe horn in Tom Petty and Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy (not as many hits in the US as elsewhere, but you always knew who you were listening to).
This list is literally ass. Freddie Mercury should be number one, Michael Jackson should be Number Two, and Elvis should be number 3. Where's Prince, Chester Bennington, and where's Ronnie Radke.
I agree with you about Prince, I was hoping he would have been in the top five but nope he didn’t make the list 😒. That man can go high and low with his vocal range and he had one heck of a scream. I don’t understand how it wasn’t mentioned on the list, I’m disappointed deeply.
Some singers I would at to this list are: Macy Gray Leonard Cohen Rufus Wainwright Lalah Hathaway Trent Reznor Anita Baker Toni Braxton Eartha Kitt Al Jarreau Bobby McFerrin Cassandra Wilson Grace Jones
Joe Cocker, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Maynard Keenan (Tool), Layne Staley (Alice in Chains), Geddy Lee (Rush), Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals), Darius Rucker (Hootie & the Blowfish), Brad Roberts (Crash Test Dummies), Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath) looks like you might have to make a "More Top 20 Male Voices in Music soon :)
Louis Armstrong's first name was not pronounced "Louie." He made that clear in his 1964 rendition of "Hello, Dolly!" He sang, "Hello, Dolly, this is Louisss, Dolly ... "
They had him on the list, but before they hit "post," they worked a volunteer shift at the Poughkeepsie soup kitchen and ran into Joe. He talked them out of it.
There are 2 voices that "do it" for me,even though their genre is not my thing. Firstly is Doris Day, there is just something about her voice that sends tingles down my spine. A good example is the song "Secret Love". Secondly, Mario Lanza. Although he did mostly opera, which I'm not a fan of, his rendition of "Be my love" is just inspiring, as well as several songs from the movie "Student Prince" in which he did a voice-over for one of the stars of the film.
Andy Gibb was the baby brother of the Bee Gees. He had a solo career. He had an incredible voice just like his big brother Barry he died in the 80s he was my first celebrity crush. I was absolutely do you have a stated when he died.
I think Jimin will definitely one day be on a list like this. I've never heard a voice like his. It's so light and delicate yet powerful and incredibly beautiful. He is so special.
I like about half of your picks in this UA-cam video including: Janis Joplin, Freddie McMurray of Queen, Johnny Cash, Cher, Louis Armstrong, Barry Gibb, Barry White, and MJ(Michael Jackson). I would have picked Patsy Cline, just to name one; there are others, but I can't think of their names right now..

@@devingiles6597 ariana nah whitney houston is better from all new woman singer and new male singres!!!
Mike Patton, surprised he wasn't on this list
(Peter Steele is also in my top picks)
Karen Carpenter! How could you leave her off this list?
If you’re going to insult Freddie Mercury by putting him so low just don’t put him on the list.
joey ramone and jon lydon
Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Minnie Ripperton, Ann Wilson...you should have done male and female lists.
YES. ANN WILSON.
Billy Holiday
@@jfgibson73 Excellent suggestion.
Minnie Ripperton should def be on this list
Edith Piaf
Joey Ramone, Glenn Danzig, Willie Nelson, Jim Morrison, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Thom Yorke, Neil Young, Robert Smith, Prince, Dolores O'Riordan, Morrissey

Rest in Peace, Amy Winehouse, it's been 13 years this month since we lost her. She would be 40 if she were still alive, and could have accomplished even more successes.
Hi
She would have won multiple Grammys before retiring to have a family because she's been on record about wanting a family in plenty of interviews.
She was so amazing. At least she was able to see her vision through on one of the most amazing albums ever.
🥈
Woulda, shoulda, coulda. Amy Winehouse's entire body of music barely encompasses 2.5 hours. Hardly enough for a concert, not that she could get through one. She's not even a footnote in music. She traded her career for the needle and the bottle. Ironic her biggest hit was Rehab considering it was her addiction that killed her. Unsurprising though.
You guys are gonna catch shit for leaving out Layne Staley.
NO FRANK SINATRA? WHITNEY HOUSTON? JOHN LENNON? STEVIE WONDER?
I always knew this list would be bs
Even Christina Aguilera 🤷🏻♀️
Talents, all of them... but with the possible exception of Stevie Wonder, not necessarily distinctive. Whitney and The Chairman in particular were standout talents -- but their actual voices weren't exceptionally distinctive. They just made the best of their fairly normal voices. As for John... both of his kids (Julian, Sean) sound an awful lot like him.
this list is a fraud 😂
Houston was a power house!
Kate Bush isn’t included. Tom Jones. How can there even be a ranking of distinctive voices anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Where is Geddy Lee? There's no one else who sounds like him.
Yes, Geddy belongs in this list!!
And he's Canadian!
Tracy Chapman, Toni Braxton, Anita Baker. Loads of other female singers with unique voices. Tina Turner
anita baker - such a powerful voice
Tracy Chapman for sure! Very unique and outstanding.
Mahalia Jackson and Eartha Kitt would be right at home on this list too :)
Leonard Cohen would have been a great addition to this list.
#1
If we were actually going by the title of the video then Tiny Tim should have been #1. Let’s be real. NO ONE sounds like that.
Truth
There's a few male opera singers that can out do Tiny Tim. They can sing in a pitch that normally is done by females. I forgot their name but they could be considered the modern castrato.
Watchmojo, where's Joe Cocker? His rough voice was different than a lot of singers in the 70s to the early 90s.
Him and Bob Segar
@@CappolaJanitor-pe7kw Seger is good but Cocker's delivery was so rough and different during his era.
Michael jackson's vocal ability was unbelievable
Minnie Riperton would fit nicely on this list. Being able to enunciate words in the whistle register and sound great doing it is an amazing talent.
Layne Staley? Jeff Buckley? Matt Bellamy?
Yay, Matt! He's awesome live!!! ❤❤
Matt Bellamy can sing for sure, but he is very audibly influenced by Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley.
How did you forget Macy Gray?
The same way the rest of us did
@@jfgibson73😮 damn
I can name ten singers that could and should have been on the list
She's Known More for Her Hair.
@@PHN-2024 I remember her hair more vividly than her one hit.
dolores o'riordan from the cranberries had a unique voice. i wouldn't mistake her voice for anyone else.
Unless you're from Ireland.
Absolutely beautiful but not "unique".
Amy and Tina Turner. Rest in peace to both of them as they were talented but also had personal demons, obviously under different circumstances.
Tina just for "River Deep, Mountain High" alone
I was shocked Cyndi Lauper and Tina Turner weren't here. Prince also had a very distinctive voice.
@@stephaniemajors7697 Leon Redbone, and Joe Cocker, too.
That surprised me to see Freddie at #17. I agree with Barry Gibb and Bob Dylan's placements in the top 10. Freddie should've been in the top 10
How do you forget Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, and Dolly Parton?
No Sting...no Morten Harket...no Cyndi Lauper....so dropped the ball on this one Mojo
Elvis Presley & Michael Jackson 😊
Meat Loaf, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Tyler, Morrissey and Chris de Burgh are more deserving of places on this list than some of the people listed here
Facts I just said same thing. They didn't even put Macy Grey, Al Green, Teddy P. Stevie Wonder. Hell nobody sound like James Brown or lil Richard.
WHo couldn't forget Meat's singing style?
How distinctive is Kate Bush?
Very
I was hoping Chester Bennington would be on here but unfortunately no love for the lost voice 😢
same.
Nina Simone, Elvis, Prince, Eddie Vedder, Leonard Cohen, Neil Finn, Alison Moyet, Kath Bush, Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson.
It's a damn shame Amy Winehouse lost her battle with alcohol addiction because she had an amazing voice.
It's surprising you left out Bon Scott and Brian Johnson, both unique vocalists for the same band with drastically different voices.
Brian called the WatchMojo offices to request they include him, but no one knew what he was saying.
😂@@jfgibson73
@@jfgibson73 😂
No Layne Staley?!
Karen Carpenter was missed.
Billie Holliday, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey?
All worthy choices. Billie could be #1.
Always had a soft spot for Bowie. It was renewed when he played the Goblin King in Labyrinth.❤
"your clothing has already hit the floor and candles appear out of nowhere " 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💯 That was Funny!!!
Layne Staley
From the grunge era, he was certainly the best!!
Chester Bennington and his fry screaming? along with his amazing ability to switch from harsh to clean tones almost instantly?
Ozzy?
Brian Jonson/Bon Scott...? AC DC?
So many more. Sinead O'Connor, Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries, Harry Bellefonte, Leonard Cohen, Morrissey...the list goes on and on...
Dolores Mary Eileen O'Riordan of the Cranberries

I think Alanis Morissette should be on this list
I agree with you.
Where is Prince?
Thank U!!!!!!! 🗣🎶
Karen Carpenter
What about Lenny? Ozzy? So more metal unique sounds than Axel.
Raphael and camilo sesto not being on this list is a crime
They’re Spanish singers so they probably wouldn’t be included ☹️
I don't know how you could have made a list of unique voices in music without including Blossom Dearie.
Blossom Dearie definitely should be on this list too.
Where's Ray Charles?
No Sam cooke is crazy
Believe it or not, Robert Plant has said that Sam Cooke was a great influence on him. I don't hear it but I'll take his word!
No AL GREEN??
Mike Patton, Chino Moreno, Maynard.... Chester, Layne or Dave Gahan. Maybe at least one of them should be a list like that.
RIP Amy Winehouse 😢
Lemmy and Dave Mustaine are unmistakable.
Where is Tina Turner and Roy Orbison?
Shout Outs to Geddy Lee, James Hetfield, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, Jeff Buckley, Billy Corgan, Chino Moreno, Maynard James Keenan, Jonathan Davis, Lzzy Hale, Amy Lee, and Chester Bennington. Speeking of Amy: Tarja Turojen, Simone, lead singer of Within Temptation? Don't forget Anette Olsen.
I guess there is a part 2 with Amy Lee, Dolores O'Riordan, Sinead O'Connor and Thom Yorke
Yorke could have been #1 on many people's lists
@@jfgibson73 Amy Lee too, her voice and range is insane. Or Sinead or Dolores O'Riordan, also don't know why I wrote Thomas and not Thom.
Obviously my opinion here but strictly on uniqueness... Honorable Mentions:
Amy Lee - Evanescence
Miles Kennedy - Alter Bridge/Slash
Reba McEntire
Layne Staley - Alice In Chains
Dolores O'Riordan - The Cranberries
Bruce Dickerson - Iron Maiden
Geoff Tate - Queensryche
Where's Kate bush?
When I get to Heaven I hope Sarah McLachlan is one the angels singing.
Geddy Lee and Ozzy were no-brainers for this list.
Freddie Mercury should been #1, no one can’t sing like Freddie. He’s has one of the most unique vocals of all time in music history.
I was thinking the same thing
So by virtue of what you are saying, everyone can sing like Freddie. 🤦🏻They can’t. Nobody CAN sing like Freddie.
whitney houston???
lol, here come all the 'experts', as expected...
Brendon Urie comes pretty darn close. I've even watched videos where both of thier vocal ranges were compared and Brendon (on record) can hit more notes than Freddie. I'm not discrediting Freddie at though as Queen is one of my favorite bands.
Wait.... ALL these artists & NO 1 THOUGHT to mention MACY GRAY?!!!!
Probably because the guy who wrote the script thought she was a Cab Calloway ripoff
How does this list not have Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin or Adele
It's criminal to make a video such as this, and leave Mike Patton completely out of it, considering he possesses an astounding and impressive range of SIX full octaves. Let that sink in...
No one does lead vocals for Guns N’ Roses like Axl Rose, as “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “November Rain” demonstrate.
Karen Carpenter, in my opinion, had a very distinct and beautiful voice.
What about... Mahalia Jackson, Etta James, Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix, Michel'le, Prince, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton
*Top 20 Unique Voices in BIG Music* There's plenty of artists that deserve to be on this list but the most mainstream artists have too much favoritism among an outdated generation that run massive companies like Watchmojo.
