  • This is my review of the A24 Rat and Mouse Trap that is made in New Zealand.
    UPDATE: SEE MY NEW FAVORITE MOUSE REPEATING KILL TRAP HERE: • The Best Mouse Trap, E...
    I purchased a couple of these years ago and had them on the shelf if I ever had more rats visiting my chicken coops or garage. Thankfully the rats haven't returned, but the mice are moving in now that it's winter.
    I decided to test the A24 units in the chicken coop, bee shed, garage, and basement.
    Standard 16g CO2 Canisters are not recommended by the company, however, they are dimensionally the same, including the thread diameter and count. I leave that decision up to you, as the company recommends only their own CO2 Canisters, here are the very VERY similar canisters: amzn.to/3YcnpQQ Use at your own risk. This is an affiliate link, and I may earn from qualifying purchases.
    Sourced from: www.automatict...
    Their website prices are lower than Amazon when I checked, but if you want to check in to see if the amazon seller has reduced pricing, here it is: (expect to pay about $20 more on Amazon)
    amzn.to/2TwAAw5
    The coop was occupied by: House Mice
    "The house mouse is a small mammal of the order Rodentia, characteristically having a pointed snout, large rounded ears, and a long and hairy tail. It is one of the most abundant species of the genus Mus."
    The Bee-Shed and Basement were occupied by: Deer Mice
    "Peromyscus maniculatus is a rodent native to North America. It is most commonly called the deer mouse, although that name is common to most species of Peromyscus, and thus is often called the North American Deer Mouse"
    I purchased A24 Traps at full retail price from www.AutomaticTrap.com
    I found them to have the best pricing, even better than Amazon, so no amazon affiliate links on this video.
    What I like about the A24 -
    Convenient to place anywhere in a moment's notice with the portable trap stand. I purchased portable trap stands for my older A24 units and they are compatible.
    The bait is attractive to both mouse species I'm dealing with. BUT, try to limit the amount of bait that comes down in the trap as the mice were eating it daily without going up to the trigger rod.
    The Counter is valuable so you know how many cycles the CO2 cylinder has fired. I have two with and two units without. I'll be adding them soon.
    The mice take no steps away from the trap and are crushed without bleeding out anywhere. Leaves the dead animals suitable for wildlife consumption.
    What could be improved with the A24-
    I wish they made a smaller mouse-specific unit. Some of the smaller mice visited the trap many times over a period of days before successfully triggering the trap.
    The biggest drawback is the price, but if you've ever dealt with rats and know what they can do, you'd be ready to shop, as I was. I had a rat avoid every single trap system I put out and it was chewing everything.
    Food for thought: I did look into hiring an exterminator and they charge the most for mice! $500 and up for mouse removal and some mouse-proofing filler etc. It was an easy decision to go with doing my own trapping. These units are built to last and the company has excellent customer service.
    Video observations were made wirelessly with Arlo security cameras:
    I used one to observe wild animals taking dead mice at more than 200 feet from the house. They turn on when motion is detected and store the sequences in the cloud so you can access sequences from anywhere you have an internet connection.
    amzn.to/2G4zF2Z
    As an amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
    THIS IS MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE MOVIE ABOUT RATS IN YOUR HOME!!! Sorry for all caps, I love scary movies. I've felt like this guy when rats moved in on my chickens one year. I would have done anything to get them OUT! Need a Friday Night Thriller to Watch?

    These traps are amazing. Have used the A12 extensively in NZ for our possum problem. And the A24 for rats and stoats. Yep, expensive, however, made in NZ, not China or India or other cheaper places. Built to a high quality standard and very robust. We also raise funds and donate these to conservation groups to help them out. Glad they worked for you.

      I agree...the A12 isn't legal here... but these A24 units are cleaning up! I'm also hoping they come out with a smaller mouse-specific unit as that will be a top seller here!!! I have four and I am not complaining one bit! A true set and forget trap system.

      @@FrederickDunn yeah, but here in NZ, we don’t have the same land animals you do. If it has four legs, it was imported, so no scruples here about what gets nailed. No squirrels, skunks, raccoons etc to worry about, just possums, rats, stoats and feral cats. And the cats aren’t interested in the traps. They have to use a different method on them. But stoats, rats and possums are a MAJOR problem here and pushing huge numbers of our native birds towards extinction.

    Dear Mr. Dunn, A better mouse trap! I just knew that you , of all people, would know about a good mouse and rat trap. As always I enjoy your narration. Your knowledge that traps for rats must be kept in one place and not moved around is very valuable to know. Lastly, once again, I enjoyed seeing the nocturnal visitors come and enjoy the “catch”. Thank you for all your good work and sharing it with your followers. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis, Canada.

    Mr. Dunn, just wanted to leave a follow up as you were so kind to let me know that these traps still work for you. I wasn't having much success initially due to the volumes of garbage around where I live. The rodents would come into my home every fall and stay until the weather became nicer (so I missed an exclusion spot). I could not catch these stealthy rats due to everyone using standard traps in my rural mountain town of PA, also poisons. I thought there has to be a problem with the bait. I baited the traps with beef, cherry jelly & birdseed. That was the clincher, they must have been Norway rats and the change in the bait did the trick. Within a day all activity stopped, I pulled the traps down from a stand alone office that is close to the basement ceiling. I had to climb a ladder and you cannot readily see the evidence but after looking at the ram, the hair, the evidence was indisputable. The wi fi is not working on my traps and will not show any kills which is no big deal. Ultimately, I made my decision to purchase these due to your review and I am so glad I did. I followed your channel prior to seeing your review and I new I could trust your opinion. Thank you so much.

      @@FrederickDunn Got one! Kinda feel a little sad - I saw it sticking its face up out of the hole it had dug under the wall from my garden into the coop, nose twitching, whiskers quivering, just looking at me... and a few hours later, bam. Big female, so no doubt there are some babies running around somewhere. Also - I misplaced the bait that came with the trap, so I just smeared a big dollop of peanut butter into the cap. That seemed to do the trick. It's reset itself, so we'll see if any more come snooping.

    I have one of these. I think your description minimizes the danger level of the plunger in the trap. I know that the plunger is very far up inside the trap, and it's very hard to get your finger up in the trigger. Still, if your finger gets hit by that plunger, my opinion is, you might actually lose your finger. When you stuck that pencil up inside there, you didn't show it, but I know that pencil was broken and smashed. I know because I tried the same thing with my trap.
    Thanks for the great content.
    Keep up the good work.
    בס״ד

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  3 роки тому +2

      I tried to demonstrate its power, I also warned that it's a "seriously powerful" trap. If people still intentionally place their appendages in that opening I really can't help them. I'm sure someone will try that out. Yes, the pencil was definitely snapped, but my kabob sticks weren't even broken. The larger versions are not currently approved in the U.S. partly becuase they can indescriminately kill off non-target animals and also possibly due to stronger ram strikes. It's easier to get your finger into a table saw or miter saw blade than into this trap. We have to use good judgement I think.

    • @KelikakuCoutin
      @KelikakuCoutin 3 роки тому +2

      @@FrederickDunn Thanks for the great content. The other thing is, when the trigger in the trap is tripped, it's loud, like the discharge of a powerful weapon. Most people jump when it goes off. I know I did. There's another UA-camr who tested it out in a video, and repeatedly triggered it, and tried not to jump when the trap was set off. It was kind of funny.
      I do not seriously think that anyone can injure themselves with the trap. It's powerful enough to cause serious injury, but it's designed so that it's virtually impossible to unintentionally hurt yourself.
      You're absolutely right, good judgement is needed with these devices.

    I have this. Looks like you had a lot of success, but I find it's really variable. I haven't had a kill in weeks now, but rats come every night as per my trail camera. Those rats are smart.
    They come back, and sniff the areas where I had previously smeared pre-bait. But they won't go up in the trap. I've gotten 2 rats in the last 5 months, and only 1 with the original bait. A few mice were also eliminated. But rats still come every night, and eat the pre-bait wherever I put it out. Smart critters.

    I bought one of these about 5 months ago. I was really hoping it would work for me. So far, I can't say I have been lucky. First, I put the taste strips up around in areas I knew there was rat activity*. Not one of them has ever been chomped on. Makes me wonder if the bait is very attractive. One got ripped off the wall. I think a raccoon did that.
    Second, the bait oozed out everywhere on set up. There has to be a better way to provide the bait than the foil ball they give you. I put the trap in a shed where I knew rats were active. There was rat poop everywhere. I tested the trap 2x. I have a counter. It registered the two tests. After a couple of months, the counter hadn't moved, but I caught one rat in a snap trap. So I moved the trap to another area I knew rats were active. After another month, it had gone off two more times. Once, I think it went off because raccoons attacked it because the trap was on its side and out from the wall it was set against.
    Now, 5 months after I set it up, it has gone off 7x (two tests and a couple of times after raccoons attacked it, which leaves only 3 possible kills). I haven't seen any dead rats by the trap but it's possible their bodies were taken by other wild animals. I cleaned out the original bait and re-baited it with peanut butter. Hopefully that works. Little or none of the bait had been consumed.
    *I used to have 3 industrial bait stations in my yard that held 6 bait blocks each. I could fill them on Saturday and they would be empty by Wednesday or Thursday of the same week. But no rats chewed the testers. Unfortunately, my government has banned bait blocks for the average Joe Homeowner like me. So that's not an option for me.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  2 роки тому

      Hi Chris, I have motion activated cameras out on all of my traps. This really helps to inform me regarding rodent behavior and aids in deciding exactly how/where to put the traps for best activity. You're possibly correct about a kill having been made and other animals (including rats) possibly removing the dead. I have a grizzly video of a rat coming and eating another rat right at the trap, then a possum took the remains away. If I didn't have a camera on it, I would also think they just don't work. Patience pays off. I don't have any rats around anymore, but have these traps at the ready the very minute one shows up again. They also get the occasional mouse, but I really want a mouse-sized version! Thanks for sharing your experience, I also found peanut butter just dries out too fast. Oozing out of the actual bait is fine as they come and clean it up and it remains attractive for a very long time.

      @@FrederickDunn The "potential" of 3 kills over 5 months when my bait stations would empty in 4 - 5 days is not a ringing endorsement. I actually physically saw a rat the other night climbing a fence in my yard near where one of the testers is located. All the testers have done so far is stain the paint on my house. I really wanted this to work and then I was going to graduate to a version for squirrels. I don't see that happening now.

      @FrederickDunn  5 місяців тому

      You can put this in your attic, or on top of your basement perimeter wall where mice travel. I found that mice really have to push the trigger to get snapped. But it does work if they are interested in the bait. Deer Mice definitely trigger it. House Mouse species are less forceful, I may look for a more sensitive trap if that's the species you're dealing with. Look at the Delete-R- Mouse Trap, that thing gets everything no matter how small it is.

    Cool trap eh - these were developed in New Zealand to deal with invasive mammals deep in the forests where it is hard to get to traplines regularly enough - so a resettable trap was required. The trap is designed for a wide variety of species - mice, rats, weasels, stoats, and a larger A12 trap for possums - all species which are annihilating our native birds and insects. There are different baits to target different species. These are an important tool in NZ achieving a goal of being PredatorFree by 2050

    Did it come with the strike counter or you bought it separately? And there is an extra CO2 canister included? Mine only had 1 CO2, and it doesn’t have the strike counter. And how much you bought this? I have the same as yours

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  3 роки тому

      There are several package options... some include the counter, or you can buy it as an extra. I haven't found the counter to be very useful. There is a kit that has extra co2 tanks and baits included, I think that's the best value... so, I like the bait (still attracts mice after lengthy periods of exposure) and the co2 bottles are good to have, but the counter doesn't tell me much when I can actually see the mice. BUT, if you think you're going to cycle it 24 times in just a couple of months, then the counter would be a valuable indicator to remind you to replace that tank.

    • @audryrose7473
      @audryrose7473 Рік тому

      Use generic CO2 canisters.
      Strike counter works great for me. And I get around 35 strikes from one CO2 canister. Have tested this out over years. I generally change the CO2 canister when the strike counter reaches about 32. I always test to see how many hits are left and there are always a few.
      Also - I've had the best luck when I've changed the peanut butter bait once every 2 weeks. You still catch some rodents for a month or two. But they prefer fresh bait. Once the bait becomes totally moldy, you won't catch anything.

      Wow... that's not good news. Are you trapping inside or outside? I've only used them inside buildings. I'd also keep an eye on the bait and if there is enough, or too much. Did you put out the bait cards to see if the rats/mice even chew them? I also use cameras to see what's scampering around where, so that information is also valuable when placing them. I wish I had some tricks to share.

    • @volvo09
      @volvo09 3 роки тому

      If mice or rats aren't even touching the bait think of other food sources around that are EASIER to get, or TASTIER for the rodents. If they're gorging themselves on another neighbors seeds or fruit they aren't going to lick a tiny bit of bait. Main sources of food always win until they are gone, a trap doesn't just magnetically attract rodents, they have their trails and paths to known food.

      Thanks for the info!

    • @audryrose7473
      @audryrose7473 Рік тому +1

      I agree. Generic, threaded 16g CO2 canisters work fine and are less than half the price. Voids the warranty, but there's nothing special about the CO2 canisters.
      Also - you CAN replace the battery in the strike counter. My original battery lasted 4 years. They want $45 for a new strike counter. So wasteful to just throw it out when all it needs is a new battery which costs $1.40! It takes a CR1632 Li coin battery. Carefully pry open the end of the strike counter along the seam. I used an exacto knife to break the seal. Careful not to cut yourself. It opened up fairly easily. The small circuit board slides out easily and you'll see the coin battery. I used needle nose pliers to remove the battery. Replace it, slide the circuit board back in and seal up the seam with hot glue gun. There's a washer inside the removable end of the strike counter which should block out most moisture. But I sealed mine up with waterproof sealant to be sure. So far so good. Should work for another 4 years! Voids the warranty. But the warranty has expired long ago on all my traps anyway.
      I've had great luck with these traps. But never caught anything with the chocolate bait that the company provides. Peanut butter works. But to use DIY bait, you need the DIY lure baskets.
      I've literally caught hundreds of rodents with these traps. Mostly mice. In the Fall of 2021 when it started to get cold outside, I caught 5 mice in one night! I catch rats occasionally - once or twice a year. There's no water source outside for rats near my house but they wander in occasionally. Rats need an external water source - mice do not as they can get enough water from their food.
      I keep cameras on the traps so I know when there's a rat around. Rats do take much longer to go into the trap than mice. There seems to be a bottomless pit of mice outdoors, but I've eliminated the rat population around the outside of the house with these traps. If you're aiming to catch rats, give it 2 or 3 months with peanut butter bait. They take a long time to trust a new food source.
      I am not aiming to catch squirrels, but I do trap them occasionally. Mostly squirrels in my area stay up in the trees. I don't mind trapping them if they are hanging around my house too much.
      Racoons check it out, but can't reach their paws up high enough to reach the trigger. A neighbour's dog comes around and sniffs it occasionally, but also can't fit. Once had some kind of a weasel-like animal check it out but didn't get caught. My traps are all outdoors and I keep them bolted to a board or a beam so racoons and bears can't make off with them. This allows me to easily move the traps to different locations if I wish.
      Can't advise about safety for cats - cats don't survive long outdoors where I live so I've never had a cat around it. But I don't think they can fit.
      I'd keep kids away from these traps. If you stuck your hand up the tunnel to the trigger, it'd take your finger clean off.

    • @KelikakuCoutin
      @KelikakuCoutin 3 роки тому

      Yes, Shawn Woods has made a few videos on that version and on this version. This version can work on squirrels but the other version is bigger.
      The plunger is dangerous, I think in this video, he minimizes the danger. In my opinion, it will do more than just "injure" your finger (if you stick it up into the trap while it's charged). It will smash it very badly - in my opinion you could lose a finger. It's serious business. That said, the plunger is very far up inside, and it's hard to get your finger up there. They are safe, unless you are an idiot. It's pretty hard to get your finger up high enough to trip the trigger. He uses a pencil in the video. When I did this with my trap, the pencil was completely smashed to pieces. It is a serious killing machine.
      EDIT: Here's the link to Shawn Woods' video - regarding the squirrel version of the trap:

    What do you think of the performance of the commercial bait? I’ve found it to be virtually odorless, and not a particularly effective attractant for mice. I haven’t even had a rodent nibble on the bait “taster” cards, despite seeing ongoing evidence of their activity. I’m still catching mice daily in my Rat Zapper Ultra, using a single piece of cat food as the lure. Never caught a single rodent in the A24, thus far. I’m considering switching the A24 to a peanut butter bait, or perhaps the very cat food that is already working. Perhaps I should remain patient, but I suspect that the commercial bait is simply inferior to other food. If you’ve had a different experience, I’d love to hear about it.

      It's funny that you should ask that. I have their newest pack of Nut Butter right here in front of me and it's working to attract deer mice, and house mice. They go straight for it without hesitation. If we're talking about rats, I have no idea as I've not had a rat for quite a while. But no matter what style of trap I'm putting out, I really like the Nut Butter primer baits they make. I think they prefer it over the one that has chocolate in it. AND, it lasts a long time. You're right, for people, we don't smell much of an odor, but it's clear the the mice are getting the scent and scampering right up to it!

      @@FrederickDunn - Ah ha! Very interesting, indeed. I appreciate the insight. I ordered the nut butter bait pack with my kit, but I haven’t tried it yet, as the included lure cards are primed with the “chocolate” bait. Thus far, the mice have shown no interest, but in fairness, it may be too early to conclude that they never will. It’s encouraging to learn that you’ve had good success with the nut butter formula, though. I most likely will swap out the bait if I don’t see any play over the next few weeks. I’ve noticed that the nut butter bait has a more discernible scent, redolent of cocoa butter. It makes sense to me that it may perform better than the stock bait. As I was researching the A24 prior to purchase, I’ve encountered many reviewers who complained that the chocolate bait was not especially enticing to rodents. Perhaps such anecdotal claims may have some merit, especially if the dietary preferences of rodents may differ regionally. Whatever the case, I have found your presentation of the A24 system to be the most useful and comprehensive overview online. Thank you for your astute and perspicacious analysis; I am exceedingly grateful.

      @@FrederickDunn - Just an update: I’m fairly convinced at this point that rodent bait preferences are regionally biased. I’ve given the “chocolate” and the “nut butter” commercial lure more than ample time to attract mice in my garage, and none of it has gotten as much as a nibble. After switching to real peanut butter following several months of auditioning both GoodNature bait options, I immediately started to get kills. I live in the Cleveland area, and I’m quickly discovering that the mice here are exceedingly selective about their food preferences. They ostensibly must be overfed. Peanut butter has worked so well, though, I’m finding that I no longer need to prebait.
      I’ve also been surprised to see that the kills have been rather gory, so much so that the mice are sticking to the bottom of the base stand as a consequence of drawing a disproportionately considerable amount of blood. It’s a little unnerving, as the mice look like roadkill after that piston blindsides them with a wallop. It’s a veritable horror show, albeit a matinee in the grand scheme of the cosmos. But I’ve taken to placing a strip of cardboard at the bottom of the stand, which tends to simplify the carcass extraction ritual.
      For me, the process of employing the GN A24 has been a game of trial and error. I believe that the commercial lure is the weakest link in the system, for two reasons. First, it’s not enticing enough to be a reliable lure. Second, the self-priming lure pod is poorly calibrated, as you have pointed out in your video presentation. It egregiously clogs up the trigger channel, and effectively prohibits mice from tripping the trap. I will happily refresh the peanut butter bait periodically, even if I have to do it every week. It’s still much easier than having to clean out the trap of excess commercial bait, just to get it to work. If mice actually relished the bait, it would be a different story. But in my limited experience, palpable apathy prevails.

    Can you use any CO2?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  8 місяців тому

      The threads are specific, but I have found other CO2 tanks that do fit and function fine. Take one of the A24 CO2 tanks to a bike shop and they may have matching threads at 1/2 the cost.

    First question is what is going on in your world that you find stuff like this? Lol!
    Second question the CO2 cartridges the trap uses are only available from the trap manufacturer correct?
    I don't have much of a mouse problem now. They do get in my shed a try to take up residence in my lawn tractor but I've been able to manage that for the most part. But I will very soon be moving and I suspect that mice might be more of a issue due to my new residence being a little more rural.

      Yes, those tanks are only available from the manufacturer, but didn't seem very expensive to me. Look at my box of mouse traps for a small, short term control. Those work pretty good, but have to be reset each time.

      Chippies could get in one, but squirrels are too large, there is a squirrel sized version that's not legal in the U.S.

      No, they are too large to fit these traps, there is a model A12 that is for squirrels but they are not legal in the U.S. and other areas as some other species could be killed.
