I'm really enjoying your vids! The ham community information pool has grown a lot in the last 10 years. When I was hunting rfi it was crappy cables letting rfi In to my audio. I had to spend some money on quality shielded cables and I eventually got it all. I'm putting my shack back together and hanging antennas again so I hope to work you sometime! Keep up the good work! 73

Hi..was just browsing the UA-cam, your channel popped in, really like the stuff so straight away subscribed it..
What I have noticed your S meter was pretty jerky before installing the kit and afterwards it became stable with atleast 1 S down in noise, so I think definitely the kit has worked.
Keep the good stuff coming and congratulations for making such a nice channel..TNX

To those who 'Suspected' line noise on their recievers i strongly suggest cutting power to every in home device except your radio. Compare noise floor screenshots or recordings made vs all devices on. If a significant difference occurs turn thing on one by on until the culprit is identified. Maybe relocating somthing protable or to another outlet fixes your issue. This may allow you to spend your radio budget for things you really need. Another bit of advice for 'Non-Techies' in Amature Radio (oxymoron?), get advice from Techies in a technical endeavour, like an experieced Elmer. An good Elmer will help you get where you want to be much quicker & with less expense.

Just a thought...Try shortning the power supply cables to each radio, from the dc power supply. You only need about 3 ft, or so! I did and it reduced the RFI a lot! Also, continue using the Palomar kits! Also, try a line isolator on your coax, at the transceiver! Good luck!!

I have yet to set up my HF shack. It's all still in the box and will be there until I can get some help installing my BBTD whole roof antenna (and HFlink Bonnie Crystal design) , plus I test for General in 6 weeks. I have window AC units (4) and a solar array on the roof over my ham room. Am I doomed before I start. I like the kits and that may be the solution if I have problems. Love your videos. I ordered my balun and terminating resistor for the antenna from Palomar as I liked their reputation. Oh, I will be setting up a G90.

Hey best of luck on passing your General in the next few weeks. I would do an RFI sweep and see if your solar array is emitting any RFI. If so, the company that installed it will have to come out and fix that issue free of charge. If you have issues, call up the ARRL's RFI division and get help from them. The stuff from Palomar will help as well. I hope you end up with a smooth setup so you can enjoy your shack and HF once you pass your exams! Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!

Keep in mind different RFI can affect different bands differently. What is causing noise in 20 meters may not, or maybe will, be causing trouble at 10 meters or 80. Knowing if the kit is working optimally requires a run through of the bands, a good crawl one night could reveal more advantages of the kit.
The other part is, if your noise floor is high enough all the time, it is hard to hear if you are killing weaker noises. If you are out in electrically quiet areas far away from electrical noise, you can get the noise floor extremely quiet. If your noise floor in a city is, say 4-5 S units, and you kill hash or other noises at say, 3-4 S units, you will never know that you made an improvement because it was too noisy to hear the noise in the first place! The noise you killed may have been drowned out... by other noise.
When you get the noise floor extremely low in general, you can hear virtually everything. And at that stage, every little noise killer is useful and appreciated.
The best RFI killer is probably putting ferrites on the coax, or using a 1:1 choke. The exterior of the coax is an antenna for garbage, and it will bring it into the shack and radio, and it will potentially make your transmit more dirty. Palomar's products there are potentially far more effective and useful than the simple radio wire choke kit.

Agree 100%. I tried the different bands at various times of day and night and discovered that in fact due to propagation and such, it varied throughout the day. So far over the past few days since I installed the Palomar kit I have been seeing an improvement, so at least I didn't waste my money on it...LOL Thanks for the tip and the comment. I appreciate the feedback. 73!!

I agree with every little bit helps... In the 1970's I installed a 20M Ten Tec in my car for the long trek to WSMR every day operating on 20M. At first, the ignition noise was horrible. I had solid copper spark plug wires (I put them on...) so I changed them back to radio-resistance wires which is what all normal cars have even 50 years ago... then I had just as bad alternator whine - but I couldn't hear it for the initial ignition noise. Don't remember exactly how I fixed that but I did and then all was good. What appears to be only one problem may be many buried under each other. Thanks for the video 73

The 'brute force' method for reducing DX shack and general house electrical RF field noise getting into the DX antenna, is to physically move the antenna as far as practical away from the house and street powerline poles. In my case, that meant positioning the high HF / low VHF antenna near my backyard fence line. At approximately 100 feet distance separation, this resulted in a dramatic drop in RFI. So much so that there was no audible SNR difference between all DX shack PCs and modems switched on verses all off. I now know from experience that mounting DX antennas on the house roof will generally degrade weak SNR. Inverse square law provides exponential decrease in RFI as a function of shack to DX antenna separation. This partly explains why the rural and semi-rural 'Big Gun' ham antenna farm installations can hear extremely low level signals that almost everyone else can't.

The RFI tends to be stronger on lower frequencies. I have a FM broadcast FM Yagi on my house roof that receives RFI from the monitoring room. A individually switched AC power board is useful to conduct RFI gear isolation tests. Hopefully it is something simple like a switch mode AC/DC power supply. But your UA-cam video suggestions are also helpful for people that have their receiving antennas near the house. 73.

Hi Scot - I have the same with my 991a - I also have a Xiegu G90 which I use when out driving ect.. HAM Radio For Non-Techies the mix 31ferrite cores is best. you will need to put them on you freezer power & you computer power cords. the power supply from your computer and you monitor power plug and computer speaker power plug. they add a lot of RF noise to your radios. you can get the on amazon in all sizes to. get all mix 31. example, I turned my comp speakers off and a hum and s units disappeared from my radio, tune speakers back on and hum and s units return to my radio. so I took a mix 31 snap on core and wrapped it around power cord to the speakers about ten times and turned the speakers back on and no hum and s units gone. the computer needed one to. any wall wart like cell phone chargers will cause it to. seem the switching little power supply in them have no RF filtering because there built cheap at a low cost. so any thing on you radios power circuit might need them. I use a linear power supply for my radio. these kind of supply's don't need RF filtering or the old bigger wall warts are made the same way. iron core cost more than switching power supply's. Also LED lights causes RF

Thank you for reaching out. Actually since that show was shot, I have tackled that issue and everything in the house is wrapped in ferrites now. What I found out afterwards is that a nearby neighbor has a solar panel farm on his roof and that is the source of my RFI now. It makes using HF at my QTH nearly impossible except for the occasional FT8 I get to enjoy at night. I reached out to the ARRL's "RFI" department about 6 months ago fully explaining my issue with images and everything and they didn't feel the need to address nor acknowledge my request for help, so that left a bitter taste in my mouth that I will remember when it is time to pay by dues to my ARRL membership. When I brought the radio the regular kit came up so I got that, might have got the deluxe if I did more research. Just wondering if you were to take the coax filter for the 991a and put it behind you antenna selector so both radios will be covered, something to think about and maybe try, if it works you have two radios covered with one device

For doing FT8 with the 991 you will need the usb cable for the 991 that will go into your computer. You will want to get a copy of WSJTx and i like to use Grid Mapper in conjunction with it to see where my signal is going when doing FT8. That was really all there was to it. There are some configurations in WSJTx that you will need to do to make it work. ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT, if using a PC, download a copy of Network Time Synchronization to make sure that your time on your PC is EXACT. Install and run it everytime before you initiate WSJTx. You can go to time.is to see if your time is exact. I hope that helps. If you have other questions, hit me up on email. 73!

In reality a bunch of jerks who were probably bullied as kids, tossing terms out that they don't even understand . I've been in radio 43 years. Everyone is an engineer. Make sure you ground the equipment and add the coils. If you get really down to it, every station has some rfi. Get a 2nd opinion.
