A fantastic intro to non comic readers of some of Marvel's less known properties
Counter earth and the story line involving Adam Warlock is genuinely some great stuff that is highly underrated and under-utilized. I watched the show as a kid and it never hit me until now that it’s the same location from the Adam Warlock series.
@@spweman That Adam Warlock series was great!! Even though GOTG3 kinda didn't know what to do with Adam, I'm glad they made use of that story arc and some of the themes in it.
@@davidbjacobs3598 I’d say Marvels guardians of rhe Galaxy game is GOATed for what they did with Adam Warlock and Mantis. Still canon believe the MCU didn’t set him up before infinity war.
The 90s Marvel cartoons were so good at pulling from the more obscure comic ideas. Though its much later I also appreciate the Super Hero Squad Show for doing the same.
An interesting note about the High Evolutionary seemingly coming out of nowhere: He very directly comes from a specific episode of the 90s X-Men cartoon. The same character, the same design, the same motivation, the High Evolutionary escapes that episode and flees to an alternate dimension to create Counter Earth, this show is a direct continuation of his storyline. Even the "Knights of Wundagore" are a direct reference to that episode. Also, with Guardians 3 now released, it's pretty clear that counter-earth being full of animal hybrids is just the High Evolutionary's thing.
Man, that initial premise of the Counter Peter and Uncle Ben is so good, even if it feels a bit too much like the Armored Spider-Man from the Spider-Man: TAS finale. It also reminds me of Peter David's original conceit for the Alchemax CEO in Spider-Man 2099, who was supposed to be an older, evil Peter. He ended up using that plot reveal for the game Edge of Time decades later.
Spider-Man Unlimited has the best Spidey suit of all time. The fact that Counter-Earth is full of half human-half animals is right out the comics. High Evolutionary did indeed create them all in the comics as well. Unlimited is basically GotG 3 but with Spider-Man characters instead of the Guardians.

I love the black shadows. I love the web pits. I love cel-shading. I love the new suit. I love the cape on it. Etc. The Counter Earth Manhattan feels very much like a Jack Kirby idea. The artstyle and villains also reflect that. I love that honestly. This is to Spider-Man like what Batman Beyond is to Batman (though a Spider-Man 2099 show would've been awesome). Rino Romano does pretty good, the story and characters are fairly interesting, and I was actually kind of upset when I finished the show. That was 2 Spidey shows in a row with cliff hangers.

It's funny that you thought Electro was an Eel, because my first thought was Catfish, mainly because his mask seems to mimic the whiskers you would find on one. Catfish can also sense electricity, which they use to hunt, which could be the Electric and Catfish connection.
I recently rewatched the series. I'm glad I finally got resolved where the vague memories of a kid with one glove came from (Mummy Kid's backstory.) but other than that, I felt like Spidey used his new powers too infrequently to bother with them. I remember them being every other episode. It was also not nearly as engaging or fun as the TAS show. My favourite joke in the series in when John and Spidey meet (paraphrased). "How can we be sure you're the real Spider-Man?" "John, are you so stupid that you'd believe your father's lies about me?" "Okay, that checks out."

What's absolutely wild is that there is a really old Hungarian television series with talking animals about an owl doctor who employs a bear named Ursula as a nurse and assistant. And so in Unlimited, the Hungarian localisation had several lines where Spidey was making jokes about Ursula, the bear lady, being a nurse or having an owl for a boss. The Hungarian localisation was weird. Also, Lady Vermin was renamed to something akin to Lady Devious in the Hungarian translation.

I love that marvel can still surprise me sometimes. Like I definitely get that the content hasn’t been good outside of a few exceptions the last few years but I had no idea that counter earth in GOTG vol 3 was supposed to be the same one from this cartoon
Yeah, both Unlimited and Spider-man 1994 had a lot of plot holes. It’s like the writers of Unlimited couldn’t decide if Counter-Earth was another planet that existed in the same solar system, or one that existed in a parallel dimension. Those sorts of things irk me.
I think what's even funnier now is that now after the release of atsv you can kinda feel a resemblance in 2099 Spider-Mans theme to that of the opening to Spider-Man Unlimited. Possibly referencing the whole part of them thinking of making it a 2099 story, which I think is neat.
As a kid I never gave this show a chance because it was too different from the Spider-Man I knew and it didn’t feel like I was watching Spider-Man just some weird show
personally, I think that them only bringing back the suit from this show now is a crime. That design is way too good to have been shelved for that long
I love the moment Gobby announces (to no one in particular) that he must do THAT!...and promptly slips out of his pants. Revealing his pumpkin bomb boxers.
I choose to read unresolved cliffhangers as "the villains won" out at least "the hero loses". In this case, symbiotes take over the planet. MAYBE Spiderman barely escapes, maybe Madame Web says, "no you can't die here" and takes him back to earth prime.
I loved the concept. And the suit was awesome, definitely showed off his genius, and how prepared he was with all the different abilities he built into the suit.
Well, I think counter earth is supposed to be based off of Mt Wundagore, the place kf the Maximoff's birth, where their wet nurse (I believe is the term for the woman who assists during childbirth) was an anthropomorphic cow lady, and the cow lady and the maximoff twins themselves have ties to the high evolutionary, and actual character in Marvel who created rocket and other such anthropomorphic characters and mutates across the Marvel universe. Plus, this was the 90s/2000s, the armor wasn't that far off from the norm
The idea of a planet exactly opposite of our own is actually much older than this show. Before we could put satellite telescopes into orbit, there was a persistent and recurring theory about Nemesis, a planet that had the same orbit as Earth, but was always on the other side of Sol, thus we couldn't see it with the naked eye the way we do Mars or Venus. This idea was proposed to explain some odd activity, which I think (emphasis on "think") was later explained by asteroids and such further out in the solar system. All the same, comic books use these discredited ideas to tell stories. Some of them are excellent, some aren't. That's just how it goes. Spider-Man Unlimited was definitely underrated, though.
the whole high evolutionary and counter earth was a whole thing on his own, more connected to the x-man and alien heroes rather than spidey. so it does feel that once the original plans were canned, they took the previously unworked idea of the knights of wundagore, and pushed it a bit more to merge with usual parker setup. you can see it in many details, like the sentinels, most of the serie isn't really that much worth of praise or scorn, but a lot of ideas were worthy, and a few were actually rolled back into main-lines later; this goblin is basically what the later incarnations of the hobgoblin, eel-ectro is the first version of the character being able to do flashteps and teleporting through electric circuits, which for more than a decade has been a key power in his main line effectiveness, X-51 is basically machine man without the extendable limbs you can see the problems that being worked on after the unveiling of batman beyond forced them to change on the fly, and the very good solutions that came from them. this version of the high evolutionary was fundamentally the last character with their evergreen design being completely altered for the nineties, and it's too bad that this universe really hasn't been explored, unlike others did
It sorta feels like a Guardians of the Galaxy story but they swapped out the guardians with Spidey. Especially with the High Evolutionary as the villain
Fun Fact: Rico Romano, Spidey's actor in this show, is one of the few (if the only, since I couldn't find any confirmation) to have played both Spider-Man AND Batman in their respective animated series.
I loved the absurdity, and I've always loved transformations, hybrids, mutations, all that sci-fi stuff, so a planet of animal-human hybrids was super cool for me.
I think I watched like 3 episodes of this show and damn LOVED every minute of it, then I never saw it again till it was added on Disney+ rewatched the Whole series and poof no proper ending.
Regardless of the shows story, the art-style (not including the animation) is really good, and I wish it was reused or a similar one was use for later series.
I feel like the people on counter earth being animals actually makes a lot of sense and isn't just Spiderman in a different franchise. Most of Spidermans villains are animal based to some degree, so them choosing the planet to have animal human creatures together with humans actually fit a lot. Especially when they then made those villains into animal humanoids
Honestly, the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is what made me better understand this show shows how much about the Marvel Universe we just don't know (though, to be fair, it's kinda huge).
Awesome retrospective! As many have pointed out, one of the show's most fleshed out scripts was to be originally for Spider-Man 2099 but was scrapped because of the Batman Beyond show. I also agree that if it would've came out a little later during the "furry awakening" it would've been A LOT more successful😅 Still, the show, in my opinion, is great and has a special place in my heart. I've got to learn about it from a very different perspective - secured a gig voice-acting for Spidey himself and got intimately familiar with all his troubles and tribulations, discussing his motivations and thoughts with the project leader as we translated the episodes. That was a lot of fun!
What i remember this series the most for is the suit. It's so good, hopefully we see it in the new spiderman game, it's crime it hasn't been shown in alot of media
If they wanted this to be a follow up to the 90's series, I think it would've been a brilliant idea to have MJ be on Counter Earth, revealing that that's where Goblin's portal sent her.
I never quite understand why Spidey uses his PP identity in the new world when he's risking his secret identity to Jonah's son because let's be honest, there's no way he's going to believe that someone just happens to look like Peter Parker in this world. I wonder if there was an episode where the two meets
Inremember watching this show as a kid and years later as i rifled through my dad's old comics being blown away at the fact that the High Evolutionary and the knights of Wundagore were old Marvel characters! They had little to do with spider man, but the fact that they were these old and little known characters was cool.
Rocket Racoon is technically one of these Guys. Counter earth etc is typically used in Cosmic-Based comic books. All this stuff is actually in the new Guardians Movie.

I think what's even funnier now is that now after the release of atsv you can kinda feel a resemblance in 2099 Spider-Mans theme to that of the opening to Spider-Man Unlimited. Possibly referencing the whole part of them thinking of making it a 2099 story, which I think is neat.
Actually watched this on TV, didn't realize back then how unique the premise was back then
As a kid I never gave this show a chance because it was too different from the Spider-Man I knew and it didn’t feel like I was watching Spider-Man just some weird show
This is fascinating. Was a big fan of the 90's Spider-Man Animated Series but never knew about this one!
This version of Spiderman actually makes a cameo in across the spider verse. Making it canon in another universe.
I really love this show because it wasn't afraid to experiment new takes on the Web Crawler Mythos
personally, I think that them only bringing back the suit from this show now is a crime. That design is way too good to have been shelved for that long
I love the moment Gobby announces (to no one in particular) that he must do THAT!...and promptly slips out of his pants. Revealing his pumpkin bomb boxers.
I always felt like the High Evolutionary was literally just the original furry grandmaster.
This show will always have a special place in my heart. It it easily has the best Spider-Man suit design compared to most.
I choose to read unresolved cliffhangers as "the villains won" out at least "the hero loses".
In this case, symbiotes take over the planet. MAYBE Spiderman barely escapes, maybe Madame Web says, "no you can't die here" and takes him back to earth prime.
But there isn't even Madame Web in this series
@@gabineagu2137 Madame Web is always watching, even if she is not seen...
This show often feels like a fever dream that I thought up one night 20 years ago.
Spider-man 2099: “Did someone say ANOMALY!?” 0:30
Real shame it stopped. It was different and new, I wish I saw where they we going with this story.
I remember loving this show as a little kid. Though I think the original concept with the evil Peter sounds way more fun lol. Wish we got that show.
Crazy how guardians of the galaxy vol 3 went to counter earth before spidey lol
Just loved the dark shadows painted deeply on it. Way big step up from most animations like Swat Cats
the whole high evolutionary and counter earth was a whole thing on his own, more connected to the x-man and alien heroes rather than spidey. so it does feel that once the original plans were canned, they took the previously unworked idea of the knights of wundagore, and pushed it a bit more to merge with usual parker setup. you can see it in many details, like the sentinels,
most of the serie isn't really that much worth of praise or scorn, but a lot of ideas were worthy, and a few were actually rolled back into main-lines later; this goblin is basically what the later incarnations of the hobgoblin, eel-ectro is the first version of the character being able to do flashteps and teleporting through electric circuits, which for more than a decade has been a key power in his main line effectiveness, X-51 is basically machine man without the extendable limbs
you can see the problems that being worked on after the unveiling of batman beyond forced them to change on the fly, and the very good solutions that came from them.
this version of the high evolutionary was fundamentally the last character with their evergreen design being completely altered for the nineties, and it's too bad that this universe really hasn't been explored, unlike others did
It sorta feels like a Guardians of the Galaxy story but they swapped out the guardians with Spidey. Especially with the High Evolutionary as the villain
I remember watching Spider-Man unlimited as a kid and there was this one episode focused on all the symbiotes and it scared the shit out of me
Fun Fact: Rico Romano, Spidey's actor in this show, is one of the few (if the only, since I couldn't find any confirmation) to have played both Spider-Man AND Batman in their respective animated series.
Me who just watched the new guardians of the galaxy movie volume three
I loved the absurdity, and I've always loved transformations, hybrids, mutations, all that sci-fi stuff, so a planet of animal-human hybrids was super cool for me.
I grew up on this show man, I remember sneaking downstairs at night to watch this show on UA-cam on my dad’s laptop
"It is absolutely an anomaly"
*Spider-Man 2099 theme plays*
I think I watched like 3 episodes of this show and damn LOVED every minute of it, then I never saw it again till it was added on Disney+ rewatched the Whole series and poof no proper ending.
Peter gets tractored down from space, meets with a cat-man: Sure, 'exact' copy of earth, JJJ. Ya idjit.
This is one of my favorite Spider-Man cartoons and I got SO mad that it ends on a massive cliffhanger
Honestly, the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is what made me better understand this show shows how much about the Marvel Universe we just don't know (though, to be fair, it's kinda huge).
talks about how great the back-n-forth between spidey and goblin is, doesn’t mention that they’re both Rino Romano
Funny how this all played out in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Awesome retrospective! As many have pointed out, one of the show's most fleshed out scripts was to be originally for Spider-Man 2099 but was scrapped because of the Batman Beyond show. I also agree that if it would've came out a little later during the "furry awakening" it would've been A LOT more successful😅
Still, the show, in my opinion, is great and has a special place in my heart.
This is my fav show in my childhood. I wish this show gets continued again. Plsssss....
Who else is here because guardian of the galaxy vol 3.?
As a kid I was so upset this replaced the 90s spiderman runtime 😂😂😂
Well, Guardians of the Galaxy did a movie with counter earth, so at least this makes sense to me
this is one of my favorite spiderman. enemies are weird but i love the Spidey especially suit
Having just seen GOTG Vol3, the absurdity of counter Earth and high evolutionary is not as absurd now 😅
I loved how cool this show was visually.
I wonder if there was an episode where the two meets
you finally cleared out my question as a kid, respectively why i ve only seen 3 episodes of this series. Never aired again on my tv :)))
Spider-Man unlimited is one of my favorite outfits. Liked the show too. BUT DAMN, that outfit
I LOOOOOOVE this show this was so ahead of its time at the time of its debut.
Insomniac Spiderman Unlimited game lol 😁....
Hated this show as a kid but looking back it looks like a fresh take on the Spidey mythos
As a kid watching this in FOx kids/ Fox box I thought Spider man Unlimited a diirect continuation to all the cliffhangers of the 90's
