  • This Contra game for Sega is way too overlooked! It is SO hype and amazing! You can really feel the blast processing. Plus I love that opening level music, it's such a jam. Surely I can't be the only one who loved playing this one. Especially for Wolf Guy.

Contra: Hard Corps and Castlevania: Bloodlines for the Genesis were essentially miracle games for Konami - they were among the first games released after the mass exodus of staff leaving to form Treasure and somehow they still came out as good as they did despite being worked on by mostly B-team workers who suddenly had to step up.

I remember playing a Hard Corps game on (I think) PS3; it was one of those that came free with a subscription to PSN, probably the same one. Had no idea it was a Contra game until I started playing it and finally put it together. Likewise, I knew nothing of Contra: Hard Corps back in the day because I only had a handful of Genesis games.
Still haven't played this one but it looks awesome!

Xbox 360 game was Hard Corps Uprising, and it's a great game. It's actually a prequel to this game, and you are playing as a young Bahamut, who is the antagonist of this game (which is actually pretty cool). It doesn't have name "Contra" in it since storywise it happens before "Contra unit" was even founded. Yes, there are a story in all Contra games and they actually take place in the same world.

I'm in love with this game's boss theme.
Interestingly the European version has a bunch of changes, title renamed to Probotector and the playable characters were swapped out for robots.
Granted apparently Contra was just called Probotector in Europe for all the titles but this is the only one I remember having the title as a kid.

    • @hybridvigga
      @hybridvigga 2 роки тому

S.N.E.S. Super Probotector was the EU PAL release, the rest were all on home computers as Gryzor and only seven people had an NES in the UK, so unless you knew one of them you never saw the NES versions had it (oh and the gameboy ones.)

I would play the robot. He had my favorite weapon set. Felt like his hit box was smaller too. This game is the reason why I love Cuphead so much, it's cartoon Contra.

    • @gurvmlk

His hit box is definitely smaller. The game has good enough hit detection that the sizes of the characters actually do matter, which is one of the best things about Browny.

I couldn't actually get all the way to the end of the game because it was pretty difficult but I liked the unlockable upgrades and the art style was very unique because it was handled by Arc System Works

I remember that era you're talking about: "Hardcorps Uprising" was a great time, and actually made by ArcSys; Konami just published it. Which is why it has that Guilty Gear / Blaz Blue feeling to the art. Apparently it's also a sequel to one of the endings of this game, though I don't remember which one.
Also: "RIP: Sparkster". I miss that little opossum dude.

Fun fact: Sparkster makes a cameo in Contra: Shattered Soldier for the PlayStation 2. There is an alternate ending you can unlock (and I think the prerequisite is that you beat the game without dying once) where the developers do all of the sound effects. It's kind of dumb, but also hilarious at the same time. Then it just trolls the player with a GAME OVER screen.

You should have played the Japanese version, or a fixed US rom on emulator/flash-cart.
The game was made to have multiple life points per life, that refill between levels, and unlimited credits, three lives five credits make some of the endings almost impossible to see as they purposefully made it one-hit kills and limited the continues in the US so people couldn't complete it as a rental. That gimped version was then changed to ALL robots (and at 50hz) for the PAL release.
It's like if final fight killed you after every enemy punch.

I loved Hard Corps Uprising on PS3. I think they didn't give it the Contra name because they wanted to make a "new" franchise (even though it's apparently a prequel to the very first Contra game).
Interestingly, it was one of the only games in which you don't die in a single hit (this game would be another, although I think only the Japanese version of Hard Corps gives you a "life gauge").

As someone who has played and loves this game to dead, here are some tips for everyone interested
-Slide has I-frames, you'd be amazed how many people forget that
-Browny is "easy mode" it's small, hard to hit and has double jump with a glide. Also homing weapons with a lot of damage. Ray and Sheena are "normal mode" with very similar weapons between the two. Fang (Wolf guy) is "hard mode" he's bigger and some of his weapons have limited range. He's not bad, you just have to learn to play him
-The japanese version has an actual life bar with 3 hits (you died at 4) and unlimited continues
-Browny would return in later games, this time with a female body... yeah, this isn't a tip, but it's something I don't thing many know about

It used to be hard to get hold of, but now you can get it either in the Contra Anniversary Collection on most platforms, or as part of the NSO expansion pass Genesis games (which is I think where Jared's playing this one.)

I feel like Rocket Knight needs to stay 2d to work, it looses all of its charm once you go to 3d (expressiveness was something that the series used to great effect, and it kind of goes away as soon as you bring it into 3d).

Konami did release both teh Castlevania classic collection and teh Contra classic collection on steam which contain Bloodline adn hard corps respectively so nothing is stopping you except of the price maybe, but on sale both get a major discount

@@Selnathorn you're right! But the thing is that I'm collecting consoles. I have most of the Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox consoles, but I'm missing the Sega consoles, and I wish to beat all those games in original hardware, so I'm looking for a Sega Genesis to beat Hard Corp, Castlevania Bloodlines, the Sonic games and so on

@@Selnathorn tell me about it. I've had luck with some games, specially old games, but for some (like SNES RPGs) I had to buy repro cartridges. So hopefully I'll find some good deal one day

I had this on the Mega Drive in Europe, it was named Probotector and I believe the only difference from the US version was that all characters were robots.

That "Reboot" of Rocket Knight is Actualy a SEQUEL to Sparkster the game isn't all that bad compare to the Travesty that is "Hard Corps Rising" it wasn't even 2D but more ARPG style

If you consider re-visiting this game, I think it's best you either get the Genesis Mini or a currently more viable option get the Contra Collection since the expansion pack is basically just a subscription long rental. Either way, you'll not only have Hard Corps, but also Probotector and the Japanese rom. Probotector is just a sprite swap making everybody robots (So yes there is wolf bot) as for the Japanese rom its basically Hard Corps on training wheels allowing for 3 hits before losing a life, effectivley making one life into 3. Or you know having Hard Corp without being dependent on a subscription fee.

It’s a me, a Hard Corps: Uprising apologist. lol. It’s extremely good, but imo it’s best experienced with the DLC character who basically plays like Strider. Extremely solid flow and some cool bosses. If you’re confused by the anime aesthetic, it might make more sense when you learn it was developed by Arc System Works, most famously known for the Guilty Gear series. Sadly, we haven’t gotten another Contra since… 😢

Even though I had a sega genesis growing up, I never played this one. The first Contra I played was C: the Contra Adventure for PS1. That thing made me rage quit so much xD

I remember renting this game as a kid, pretty sure never getting past Stage 1, and I also remember the other Hard Corps a 360 arcade game or something like that.
