After everest now, just wanted to throw out there this video is very inaccurate / poorly done. I was getting 20 views when i posted this and was really just doing whatever without really thinking about it - maybe will make an updated version one day with better information haha

I enjoy this level of video to show everyone has to start somewhere. If you do another version, please don't remove this one. Seeing the growth is great and shows that we all were noobs at some point and that shouldn't stop anyone from setting big goals.

Hey bro, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you making these videos. I am paralyzed from the waist down due to a mining work related injury. Since then I have spent years in and out of hospitals and nursing facilities after various surgeries and in that time I became fascinated by mountain climbing vids and documentaries (especially Everest ones). So cool to see all the gear, the costs, and even small explanations of the workings of all the equipment used to climb the world’s highest peaks. I will be tuning into all of your updates and I want you to know you have somebody rooting for you back in AZ, USA! You got this bro!

Your humility throughout this journey, even in this video when you say "not really sure what this does yet" is encouraging to many as it reminds us that everyone is a beginner at some point. Well done and thanks for being humble in your approach to everything

  • @icegypsy99

Amazing how fast that stuff adds up. Not a mountaineer, and will never need 99% of that stuff. I will say even investing in quality gear makes a huge difference. In this case more important when you consider you are putting your life on the line. For me, I used to by the cheapest stuff. "Oh that will do" Until I started developing issues with my shoulders and base of my neck. (partly due to age, and partly due to using crappy gear for so long) I finally invested in a good Osprey pack. It's been a Godsend. It fits like a glove, and totally takes the weight off my shoulders. The hip belt actually supports my back as well.

lol so many butt hurt people complaining that Ryan is a rich privileged white kid blah blah, not crediting the sherpas etc.
    1. He made his own money.
    2. The sherpas get paid and do it for a living. Ryan was really appreciative of them the entire summit and pointed out how amazing they are at what they do.

One day my buddy decided to take flying as a sport.

Cool to see all the gear and depressing at the cost of it all🤣🤣. You didn’t seem super sure about a lot of the gear or what you had actually bought/ the use for a lot of it. I assume whoever you booked with sent you a list of stuff to get? Did they send you specific brands and models of stuff to get?
Don’t think I’ll ever do Everest nor be able to afford it but besides the mega high altitude clothing I actually seem to own it all besides the figure of 8 descender.
Also just want to add it’s not great to store your expensive sleeping bags compressed like that. You only want to compress down sleeping bags when you need to pack them etc. keeping them compressed when stored for long periods of time can result in them not lofting as good when used meaning they don’t work as well as they should.

This is what Himalayan climbing and especially Everest has devolved into. Someone with little to no climbing experience, with obviously close to no technical knowledge of the gear that their life depends on, but has the funds can literally buy their way up the mountain.
Not trying to take anything away from Ryan, seemed to have no trouble on the mountain, but... when did high altitude Himalayan mountaineering on Everest become the mountain to cut your teeth on? I dont understand the allure or sense of accomplishment achieved by walking up a mountain with a Sherpa clipping and unclipping your fixed lines for you. I wonder if he has any technical climbing experience or has just been a client on non technical guided expeditions.

You've just pointed out the major problems with everest. You don't even know what half your kit is for which means you'll have no idea how to use it. Gobsmacked that you've gone up everest and you don't even know what a figure 8 is

I'm wondering if during the trek time the expedition holds classes on gear and when and how it will be used specifically for the more technical parts of the climb?

@marywardcoaching everest isn't the place to learn how to use basic climbing equipment. Experienced climbers die up there every Yr. Every inexperienced person that has a few quid that goes up there puts other people, especially the sherpas at risk

@@stevewomble2337 I was thinking of my now retired US Army husband who probably never used a belay before rappelling down what he always called bottomless crevasses during the 3 week Northern Warfare Training at Ft. Greely. Even at Air Assault he rappelled out of a helicopter after a short training. The whole course is only 2 weeks. I'll have to ask him how much he knew prior.
Definitely see your point though. I'm curious how much training and prep followed what I think was this early video. And I'm curious if you have to rappel during a Denali climb. The whole process is well above my pay grade! I just got interested after seeing a few climbing reels on FB and reading Krakauer. Yikes! I'll stick to snorkeling in calm waters.

You obviously put no effort into making this video. The whole first 3 min that I was able to watch is “I don’t know what any of this stuff actually costs” and “I don’t even know what some of this stuff is called”
