- How to add hiking medallions to your hiking staff...without bending the little nail...NO Guarantee...I still bent it when I was near a knot in the wood...careful. (still had 3 bent nails on 35 medallions)
"Hike America" has hundreds of medallions from all over the country...also staffs...(buy 10 get 1 free). - Навчання та стиль
I've been bending nails for two hours until I found your video! Thank you sir!
Great tips - worked perfectly for 4 medallions! It's a shame I didn't watch this for the previous ten :/
That looks so much easier! Thanks for the tip.
And your medallion collection is amazing!
So glad I watched this before putting any on! Thanks so much making this video!
I just got my first hiking staff after years of wanting one. I just got my first medallion for it too; thank you for the very informative video!
Thank you! Really appreciate the time you took to put this together.
I've done it your way, Now think about this method... Mark and slightly pre drill small holes to start nails. Locate medallion and nails in place and then finish by pressing the nails in completely using a 'framing brad setter' available from 'Lee Valley' for $12.50 Can. (Or a pair of water pump pliers with the jaws taped up to prevent marking.) Less chance of damage or losing a nail! I love to see them on canes! Thanks and Good Luck!!
Excellent video! Thanks so much! I just got back from Europe with 3 of these, and 1 from Yellowstone waiting to be installed. I am sure I won't have to deal with bent nails! Cheers!
Great video! Would be good to see how to make your own medallions.
Thank you for an excellent video! I have 2 medallions I have to get on my cane. This will help a lot!
Thank you for this - good trick with the needle-nosed pliers. Appreciate it - I see you have a World Organization of Scouting medallion too - I'll be sharing your video with others. 🙂
The needle nose is the key. Thank you.
I just put my first ever medallion on a staff that I bought at the Crazy Horse Memorial. I bought the medallion and the staff there in the gift shop and after I put it on I used 2-part clear epoxy over it to protect it because I'm using it for hiking.
Great idea! I'm gonna do that on mine. Thanks!
Just a couple of tips for getting tiny nails into hard wood. Try using an ice pick to start the nail hole. Then your needle nose pliers to hold the nail. And a tack hammer to drive the nail in. Hope this makes your life a little easier. GF1 😬🤯😬🤯😬🤯😁😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁😎
Thank you, worked like a charm!
Thanks, Cliff. Great video.
Very good and simple. Thank you.
We just discovered hiking staff medallions while touring Biltmore.. upon looking up your video to learn how to attach the medallion we learned about hikeamerica.com and placed a large order with them! Thanks man! Hike on!
Great video, thank you so much~
Thank you! I just bent all my nails before I googled how to do it. 🤣
Thanks for the pointer!
Ahhhh -- great video -- thank so much!!!
my stick is hand made from mulberry wood.i predrill my holes.good video.
I see that World Scouting emblem over there!! We are giving our Webelo 1 patrol staffs for their crossover to working on AOL. We added the Webelo shield if they earned their rank.
Thank you!
Any suggestions on how to bend the medallions when they are flat?
New camper and new hiker... just started this month. Question- I bought a Brazos hiking stick and a state park medallion at the most recent place we stayed. When I started to put the medallion on my staff, it needed some bending as shown in this video, however, the paint/enamel used instanly cracked and started to peel off, taking away from the aesthetics of the new medallion. Any bits of advice for this?
Has anyone found a good source to purchase replacement nails? I've boogered up so many in the past, even with pliers.
I use epoxy on the medallion, then wrap it in an old shoe string tightly until the epoxy sets up. I then predrill the holes with a very small drill bit place the tip of the brad into the hole and use superglue on the brad, tap it in the rest of the way and it will be there for a long while
I'm really bad at putting mine on. I loose nails and I'm glad I get three in a pack. If I'm successful at one I use the third on old medallions. They bend they fall off. They are crooked. But they are on. An hopefully don't come off on a hike.
Didn't work for me, Cliff. I bent two of the little tack nails and lost one. I'm down to one left. Not my forte. Thanks for the video though. Much appreciated!
Hey, Clif(f), are you still with us? I wonder if he’s still alive.
Yep.... still alive.... years have been hard lately... went through the Paradise fire...lost everything, including everything in the video
I’m happy you made it! Thanks for the video ❤
Any idea on how to put medallions onto a hickory walking stick? I bent so many nails and even drilled a pilot hole for a small screw but broke the screw in half. I know the hickory is a very hard wood but come on.. there has to be a way. I might have to epoxy glue or hot glue it if I cant figure out a way to put these medallions on. Thanks for the help.
Had the same problem with hickory. After a lot of frustration I ended up drilling pilot holes bigger and deeper than I would ever normally make a pilot hole.
Milliput Epoxy Putty !!
That's also a good solution for the new aluminum ergonomic canes which wouldn't take kindly to having nails pounded into them.
My staff is hickory. Locate medallion & mark your holes. Chuck one of the screws in a cordless drill & use it to drill a pilot hole. It works very well. Admittedly, The short brads can be a pain to drill with, so if you can get a longer one of the same diameter or smaller, you're golden.
All that Fuss!....just use Milliput Epoxy Putty to permanently stick it on and use the pins for something else !
