I used to sell Buffalo shirts. I hope they've improved the quality of the fleece as we decided to stop selling them when they started using a low quality fleece. You could actually see the pertex through gaps in the fleece! Please someone let me know if Buffalo have rectified this. It was a shame, we were the first shop to stock the shirts.

Another great video Paul. I recently completed a 2,193 mile thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. The east coast of the United States gets a lot of rainfall. The rain gear I used on this 5 1/2 month hike was the Mont-bell Versalite. It kept me dry and warm. An added benefit is they are ultralight. The boots I used are the Lowa Renegade GTX.

It's essential to keep the stuff in your backpack dry but a wet backpack is no fun. If nothing else, it gets heavy. Even with a cover, the west of Scotland weather gets water between your back and the unprotected part of the backpack. For low altitude, summer walking, a poncho that covers the backpack sounds like a good idea as long as it doesn't blow around too much, is scratch-resistant and doesn't weigh too much. I've not seen any that I fancy. Have you tried any that are OK?

Altberg boots, berghaus hillwalker goretex bottoms and keela munro jacket. I agree that bb cap is essential. Also a good base layer such as merino wool makes a massive difference to comfort for any condensation you do get.

Hi from a South African living in Switzerland ..
Yep .. Staying Dry. Getting wet from without, within, or both 😊.
I belong to a Walking (Nordic) Group and my experience is that during exertion in adverse weather, no matter how 'breathable' the jacket may be, eventually one will get wet / damp. I tend to 'run hot' which further aggravates the 'getting wet from within' bit. Heavy rain, to me, appears to reduce the transfer of internal moisture to the outside.
That said, your point on the 'internal micro-climate is valid and as long as one is generating internal heat, all is well. As soon as the rain lets up, I tend to get the rain shell off, thus allowing my inner wicking synthetic layers to dry out .. the Internal Furnace normally keeps me comfortable. I monitor my internal body temp via my little and ring finger tips. When they hurt .. then I'm getting cold and then its time to push up the metabolism or don an outer shell.
Spare Dry Clothing .. very important. A lightweight Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Daypack takes care of that .. albeit, notwithstanding the advertised 'dryness of the pack, said clothing also each in their individual plastic Zip-Loc Bags.
A good, informative posting .. thanks .. and a 🌹 to your better half who resolutely shares your Wanderings .. bully for her 👍.
Take care .. stay safe ..

I use both a light and heavy MVP and MTP British Army Gore-Tex Petroleum Jacket and Trousers, for fishing and hiking, I carry a high viz rucksack cover if I want to be seen, most of the time I don't, IMHO they're great quality and value for money, they do the job as well, if not better than any commercial outdoor brand name, I bought them Brand New, I would highly recommend them to anyone.

I love the beading effect of a new waterproof, though even when reproofing an overcoat that is starting to 'wet out', I've never been able to recreate that brand new beading effect. Saying that, I've heard the new Mountain Equipment Shake Dry technology goes a long way to addressing this.

Enjoying the videos a lot Paul. I’ve used, and still own, a number of top brand waterproof jackets. However, I recently bought a relatively cheap black-friday sale Trespass waterproof with their ‘tres-tex’ version of gore-tex just for a try more than anything, and it is honestly just as good. Plus with the cheaper jacket I’m not overly worried about ripping it or letting the dog sit on it when required!

I use my offshore HH waterproofs and Wellington's in the Scottish Highlands, whether walking or sea kayaking around the Clyde Fjord or Western Islands. I gave up wearing walking boots some twenty years ago in Scotland and as a consequence, have suffered no blisters! In the Sahara; Mauritania, where I am a guide, I wear Merrell sandals and normally get around 50 000 kilometres per pair. I use them in the summer months in Scotland and again have never had blisters. In the Sahara, I of course have sun cracked heels as a consequence of the sun at 45-55'C. Here in Scotland we need to have the clothing for four seasons in one day whilst out in the wilds!

The variety of gear available today is overwhelming compared to when I first started solo camping on Dartmoor back in the (pre-Goretex) early 70’s.
Started out with army surplus gear, then saved up for various goretex models. Then switched over to Paramo gear, which with some TLC are still going strong after 20 years.
But in recent years have bought much lighter and cheaper Frogg Toggs for summer hikes, and either Buffalo pertex jacket (spring/autumn) or my Paramo kit in winter.
Still hoping for the next major technology breakthrough, which will FINALLY give us the ‘perfect’ waterproof jacket for all year round use...🤞

Nice video Paul and good to promote outdoor adventures when the weather is less than perfect! I currently have Berghaus waterproof kit - a Pro shell jacket and the Hillwalker trousers. I only use the waterproofs if absolutely necessary as they do make you overheat and sweat very quickly. That being said, the other day I did an all day walk in the Hillwalker trousers and I kept totally dry with n moisture build up inside. We don't have the high peaks in the Cotswolds that you have further north so I don't really need a serious mountain jacket although it can still be very bleak out there in the winter time. The other important thing about having a decent jacket is that it will be windproof and often that can be essential to staying warm. Agree 100% with your comment on the boots - if you walk decent distances good boots are essential in my view, not just for keeping feet dry but for comfort. You need to pair them with good quality hiking socks - my favourites are Bridgedale. Not the cheapest but brilliant socks that enable all day walking with zero blisters.

Great advice, just one query on the paramo - i have one, (paramo analogy directional system), i dont think the water gets to my actual skin, did i hear that right? - maybe through the first layer, then back out as you describe, or is yours a single layer, not double layer like mine. I was pleased to see your other gear is exactly what i use - from scarpa boots through to the cap under the hood!
One old motorbikers tip i have used for decades - keep a plaggy bag handy - put your muddy boot in it before you put leggings on - stops boot snagging on the inside of the leggings, and keeps them clean.

@@Jonsoh811 you should almost always start off your hike cold as well, because after 10mins or so you always warm up loads, so if you're starting the hike off comfortable then you're usually setting yourself up for a fall

I've never in recent times experienced a truly waterproof jacket and trousers. I always seem to end up wet to the skin even with my top end Berghaus Extreme kit despite reproofing.

when you are sweating hard there arent really any waterproofs that will keep you dry, if the weather is bad enough water will get in, as for COMFORT in sideways rain up a big hill i never found anything better than my paramo jacket. only downside is if the weather is mild they are a bit warm.

@@leetshots yes I agree - only waterproofs I can recall that were great was a long, almost poncho style waterproof jacket I had aged about 14 in the scouts. Could wear it with shorts and wellies so stayed dry even when standing around in the rain on camp for hours

I've never had a pair of Goretex boots or clothes that actually kept proper relentless water out. I'm just getting leather boots next time - my mate got some Scarpas same as yours for £200 and he loves them. I got some Salomon Ultra 3 mid tops in wide fit and while they're the comfiest, lightest things I've ever had on my feet, a few miles through boggy ground and the tops of my feet were damp. Always seems to be the top of the toebox of Goretex fabric boots that let the water in, even after a lot of proofing. Maybe I'm just unlucky and keep getting shite boots.
Other problem is I have really wide feet, which makes finding a good fit exceptionally hard, especially in lockdown.
On a 14 mile hike up some mountains in the lakes near Brothers Water the other month, the only bit of kit that kept me bone dry was a Regatta pack-a-mac I impulse bought as a spare from The Range lol. Oh and an "Otter" waterproof beanie I found on the floor at work.

I have the MTP Goretex army over trousers with the full length side zippers, great quality and reliable, cost me £12 for a lightly used pair, only down side is no belt loops though am looking to get the hooded MTP Goretex Jacket for fishing, some have pit zips which is essential in the UK imo. Am betting they will outlast some of the expensive branded kit too, a great starting point for reliable kit on a budget, admittedly its not as smart or light as the branded stuff but around 80% cheaper by comparison. Also looking at the MOD Altberg Defender boots for cold winter use as they seem to get ok reviews and should be warmer than the Merrel Flex boots I have atm though they are good for 3 season use.
Also picked up a heavily discounted Mountain Equipment Odyssey - jacket on fleabay which is cut very well and proving reliable at around half the weight of my Berghaus Hillwalker which I now mostly use for cold/wet weather casual wear as it lacks pit zips.

I tried this a few months ago in the lakes - brand new pair of sealskinz socks with normal non-waterproof boots as it was that bad the night before my Goretex boots were wet through. They lasted a good hour or so before my feet were absolutely soaked. The only thing I'll say for them is at least the merino wool kept my feet nice and warm for the next 14 miles, even if they were saturated.

I have a nice staff discount at the shop I work in, but we don't sell Paramo currently. Would you say a Pertex jacket and another heavier one is all you need for year round use? Love your videos and great to see Derwent featured!
