The scene at the end of Michael sitting alone by himself is astounding. The king is alone. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.
I love how the sopranos borrowed that same alone at the top type situation many times! The ending of GF 2 just is do sad

That scene shows why Michael was a failure as a don. He did things Vito never would have done, and at the end, he's a sad, lonely man.

The Havana shots were filmed in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. They closed sections of town for it. I was in second grade at the time and those were my first traffic jams experiences. I lived close to where they shot the scene of the rebel running into the army car and exploding a handgranade.

When Robert de Niro take his children back to Sicily where he grew up. My father did this in the 80s he took us back to where he was born Kashmir. The scene is so lovely 🥰 his father loved his family. Always bring a tear to my eyes. My father sacrificed his life to give his children a better life.
This series is an immigrants story ( or settlers is a better word)..I have Nigerian heritage …I can totally relate with much of it …
“It’s not personal it’s just business” it’s always personal when you’re on the receiving end of the business.
Just simple common sense
That's part of the book that they left out of the movies. As a young man Vito teaches Micheal, 'it's not personal, it's just business'. Before he dies Vito tells Michael the final lesson, "It's always personal'.

The mob had a limit on their taking and actually made efforts to keep their communities, in which they also lived, clean and safe and prosperous for the general populace. Politicians who are crooked have no limit on taking and are happy to destroy the lives of the communities they pretend to represent. Mobsters tend to have an ethical code, but not dishonest politicos.

Yeah, a great character. Hard to consider that to be a capo he must have been capable and experienced with brutal murder, thuggery and ruthless dishonesty. All business, nothing personal.
The scene where Kay tells Michael that she aborted their baby was so brilliantly done. Pacino's physical acting was top-notch. The look on his face, as anger slowly forms and gets worse and worse as she talks was phenomenal. I have said many times to Pacino's performance here is my all time favorite acting job by any actor ever. That scene, among many others, is why I think so.
Had Pacino made the movies he did over the first 5 years of his career, over 20 years instead, he's have at least 3 Oscars.... he blew up so fast and so hard, made G1, G2, Serpico, Dog Day, all in his first 5 years.... he was still a "rookie", so people didn't want to give him his due yet.
It was literally Michael Corleone, not Al Pacino there, he transcended that and kinda was thinking and acting like the character the whole movie. Best acting ever.

Robert De Niro KILLED IT as young Vito Corleone. He definitely earned his first Academy Award.
But Pacino's subtle transformation was probably one of the best performances in Acting history.

DeNiros rooftop scene was probably top 3 ever for any movie. The patience with the light bulb and towel wrapped as fanucci taps the bulb. Incredible movie one of if not the best movie ever made .
Theres so many scenes like that in part II. I love the rug scene. The landlord scene is hilarious too.

It is just amazing the atmosphere that is created and the cinematography and everything it is an unreal movie completely fantastic just indescribable
Cinematic masterpiece
I just love the symbolism on how Michael is a tragic hero. Vito died a happy man, regretful that Michael got into the life, but still happy. He was surrounded by family that loved him. Michael "wins" and stays alive (im excluding 3) but he is alone. Family is either dead or gone from his life. He is the polar opposite of his father and it really shows in 2 when they go between the flashbacks and the current plot.
I went and seen Godfather lll with my Dad. I loved it, so did my Dad.
I've read that G-3 shows best the relationship between the Mafia and the Church.
And Michael breaking down confessing his ordering the murder of Fredo, great acting.
You forgot to mention scene in the beginning between Michael and senator. That scene is the best scene in any film about what politicians are.
What struck me about The Godfather Part II more than anything else was how Michael was transformed as Don of the Corleone Family. Michael promises both his father and Kay that he will turn the Family into a legitimate business enterprise. Instead of legitimacy, he grows more disconnected from his family; more cold; and more evil to the point of killing his own brother. The final, absolutely riveting scene in the film when Michael is remembering the past birthday party for his father is so powerful. You can't help but notice that just about every single person in the room is dead and gone and Michael has betrayed his ideals ("That's my family, Kay, not me"). Michael remembers and looks troubled and sad. What a truly tragic story it is. Good cannot come from evil.
The movie brilliantly shows the contrast between father and son. Michael failed as a don, because he was never meant for that life in the first place (Vito even mentioned that in the first film). Michael did things his father never would have done, and it cost him. At the end, he's a sad, lonely man.
Fredo deserved to be killed. He nearly had Michael, Kay & the kids killed because he was jealous & chose money over family

@@michael43567 Don't think Fredo wanted it that way. Fredo was the opposite of what he thought he was. He was stupid and didn't think the whole thing through. Fredo should have been removed from family business to prevent future problems, but I don't think he deserved to die. By the code of La Cosa Nostra, he did, but on a human personal family level, he didn't.
To my fellow Catholics, when Fredo is in the boat fishing he says the first half of the Hail Mary out loud. Then silence, but if you finish the prayer, right after you say "amen", the shot rings out. I've seen it and prayed it at least 50 times and I still get goose bumps every time.
it is chilling more at the beginning to me, when Fredo starts praying out loud, with Al Neri sitting right behind him... you almost can cut the tension.
I noticed that, it’s paced so well. Almost like Neri let him finish after the Amen.

Rocco was written as good enough to let Fredo die in a state of grace.
As a son of a chef, and as a son of a chef who doesn't even know how to make pancakes right, Michael's "Are you kidding me?" about his kids never watching the Godfather is something I've heard from my dad so many times - it's good to know that love is transcendent of lifestyles and choices, no matter the paths taken. You can hear it right then and there.
Imagine being his kids and not watching these pieces of absolute perfection
The one thing I did like about Godfather three was when Michael was in Italy at a Don’s Funeral. He sees the people’s sorrow and laments as to why this Don was so loved and He was so feared!
It's got problems but there are several things I really like about part 3. I thought Andy Garcia was phenomenal in that (when he had anything to work with, at least.)

My favorite scene was when Michael met Frank Pentangeli at his own house and made him sweat. Then the relief on Franks face when Michael says, “I want you to help me take my revenge.” Frankie Five Angels breathed a huge sigh of relief, and was like, “Mike, what do you want me to do?” BRILLIANT
The best about that Hyman Roth "I didn't ask why... this is the life we've chosen" is that it revealed the real anger that Hyman Roth had for Michael under his superficial charm. And why he plotted against him so much.
My favourite detail is how when they speak sicilian, they dont just speak italian, they speak the authentic dialect. Even the calabrese man spoke his dialect properly.

John Cazale was one of the most underrated actors. His performances in Godfather I & II, the Deer Hunter and Dog Day Afternoon are some of the best acting I've seen.
I so agree with you, he was wonderful and it is a shame we lost him so young. There is a great show about him called "Considering Cazale", which you can find on YT. I loved it and think you would too.
To my understanding, everyone working with him, knew just how good he was. They had the deepest respect for him, and valued his advice.
He did only 5 movies.

As much as I revere GFI , GFII is my favorite. Everything about it is perfect. It made me forever adore Pacino. He is mesmerizing as Michael in this and when he on screen you cannot take your eyes off him. The Hyman Roth character is played marvelously too..
Incidentally, a little fun fact, the "Moshulu" which transported the young Don to Ellis Island is anchored in the Delaware River in Philadelphia, you get a great view of it going North bound on I-95. I believe it's now a restaurant,

My favorite of the Godfather trilogy. The flashback scenes are epic.
Unbelievably good those flashbacks are. DeNiro was flawless in it. And them speaking Sicilian and not just regular Italian was brilliant too
I loved when they at one point showed The Godfather and Godfather 2 edited to run in timeline order. 3 was like some of the Chevy Chase movies that he was contracted to do and were just terrible.
@@danielueblacker9118 That was called the Godfather Epic. It wasn't off my TV when it was on HBO. I wish I would have recorded it. I made the mistake of relying on on demand thinking it would be there forever.
I watched “Godfather 1” and “Godfather 2” countless times. I never tire of it. Greatest movies ever made. One look from Michael and your blood freezes. He is the epitome of walk softly and carry a big stick. Never see him coming.
When Mario Puzo passed away at his home I was the Funeral director who was there for the home transfer to the funeral home!
To me, they're just two parts of one movie so I can't judge them as two separate movies. Both great. Every one in these movies nailed their roles. So many iconic scenes. That scene where Michael closes the door on Kay says so much without saying a word. I also think Hyman wasn't just letting Michael know he knew about Moe Greene but was also trying to tell him that he was willing to let it go and hope Michael would let his attempt on Michael's life go as well.
I love how Vito loved, respected his wife. Great video.
I did too. One of my favorite scenes is in GF I when Vito and his wife are dancing at Connie's wedding. You can't hear what he says to her but she suddenly transforms into a shy girl, thrilled with her first compliment from a man she loves, she looks down, then looks at him with a kind of embarassed look on her face. I cry every time I see it.

I just wanna say the opening scene when Vito was a kid in sicilia was so realistic my mother who,s 94 from agrigento province.says she remembers similar incidents..but everything you see shot in sicilia was 100 percent accurate. Even the dialect..that's how it was back in the day..

When both The Godfather and Godfather 2 came to the drive in where I lived in Orange County, Calif.There were cars lined up for miles! No exaggeration. It was phenomenal !

Robert Duvall was excellent in Godfather I and II and doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.
l agree with you Steve, Duvall's character always showed loyalty to the family and you can tell that Michael trusted him totally, even though he treated him like crap some times.
@@jbjoeychic Robert Duvall is a very under-rated actor. I remember him in his first movie, To Kill a Mockingbird, which I saw as a kid a LONG time ago. He was great in Colors, also.

That was Sonny. Michael wasn’t born in 1917, he was born in 1920.

I really like the ending. That final flashback was the pinnacle of the symbolism and represented the events to call me in the single frame of Michael in that dinner table where everyone was singing happy birthday to the Don.
I think it symbolized that he was always alone, just him and his thoughts.
The fact that your father put a contact on both you and your brother.. and you still love him. Deep respect.

His father was great, he was just in a system in which there are certain rules, probably was coerced into that or it wasn't him. If it was me i would understand, relationship between father and son when the atmosphere is tense and disturbing involves forgiving. Sonny was legendary in that life.
There needs to be a miniseries called 'Don Vito' which fills in the gaps between the end of the De Niro story in the movie and Marlon Brando in GF 1. The stuff described in the book, involving Luca Brasi taking on some Al Capone guys, was absolutely brilliant. Would give a chance to see Sonny more fleshed out as well.
The Old Havana scenes were filmed in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Some of the sites are no longer standing (most memorably the Hotel Jaragua, were the balcony/solarium birthday scene was shot). Others still remain: the Palacio Nacional (New Year's ballroom scene) and Parque Independencia (Michael and Fredo's ice cream scene ).
Godfather II gets better everytime I watch it. The locations, Al Pacino, John Cazale, that sleazy senator, and the cast were amazing..
Especially the flashbacks too
I always have to watch 1 and 2 back to back. An excellent way to spend a rainy day.

I’d love to watch a whole movie where Michael just narrates what’s going on on screen.
Michael and Joe Pistone doing a watch along for Donnie Brasco would be amazing.
A commentary track with Al Pacino in character as Michael Corleone.
Michael's trajectory was too good. His metamorphosis from an outsider of sorts on his own path, to his active role in the response to Sonny's death, and on to himself heading the family - and ultimately changing him drastically, for me at least, has Part II slightly edging out the first. Shame III was such a missed opportunity but I still need to see the new version.

Marlon Brando is so good that even as good as Al Pacino is, there is a drop off in the films when Brando's presence ceases. He has the greatest screen presence. It FILLS every scene he's in. So, I give the first one the edge. Personal opinion.
I’d argue that people who know who Marlon Brando is and how good he was feel this. Lots of people barely felt the lack of Marlon, Al Pacino really carried part 2

I kind of feel the same way too.. Also the Godfather 1 was the story of Michael's transformation into The Don... So it was a little more interesting because he begins the film squeaky clean and ends the film with a lot of blood on his hands..he gets much more crueler and colder in the second film.. The Godfather Part 2 was fantastic but Godfather 1 edges it out by a little bit..

Brando's nuanced performance is enigmatically captivating. One that's more-or-less impossible to follow even for killers like Pacino, De Niro and Duvall.

@@Mark-xh8md Absolutely, I ended up feeling the same way about Kay as I did about Carmela Soprano. They knew what they were getting into when they married and loved the money and the perks. Kay killing the baby after Michael had almost been killed and then walking out after the Senate hearings was unforgivable.

What about the stare, Michael's mom funeral, Michael hugs frado, Michael stared at hit man, hit man gets the stare, hit man understood.
There's so much going on in one scene with no dialogue. This movie has a lot of great moments like that.

My favorite part of the entire Godfather trilogy is DiNiro's part as the young Vito. Everything about it is perfect. Set design, acting, script etc..
I really see both "Godfather" 1 & 2 as one movie. This is why I never favor one over the other.

Also another thing I like, Joe Spinell, one of my favorite character actors, appeared in both films. He was also a character in real life. If you ever get ahold of the Blu-ray edition of Maniac, make sure you watch the documentary of his life. A great but tragic Italian American actor.

Quick note, is Pentangeli not Pentegalli: you can even hear Robert Duvall, when he goes to see Frankie before he testifies in the Corleone trial, saying to him "Don't worry about anything Frankie Five Angels" as Pentangeli can be transliterated in English as Penta, Five and Angeli, angels. Great reviews by the way. Always great to get the insights and comparisons between movies and real life.
