I have built micropiles since 1990. Regarding 1:14 and 1:28, I have never heard of adding bentonite to micropile structural grout to control grout loss. I would be suprised allowed by AASHTO or DOTs. Sand is the first grout loss control. I guess I could see adding bentonite for grout and redrill. Also from early on, I have done many projects with lateral working loads of 10 kips maybe even 20 kips. I wrote a paper on this in ASCE GeoSupport2004 .

Regarding lateral loads .. you are right .. micropiles may have some appreciable lateral load resistance .. it's a design game
